      Well you've definitely got the one to have! My budget didn't stretch that far but also I just wanted to experience the base S really.
      The S performance is really good so the turbo's must be mental! I think it'll be a future classic, and Porsche has now included in their Porsche Classic program.
      Yeah it's a great daily driver, it's just the fuel consumption that holds it back! But very easy and relaxing to drive, refined and fast!

      Thanks for the kind words, glad you think my video captures the car well! I think as the 955 as got older, its starting to get some recognition, definitely think it'll get a classic car following! 225000 miles is amazing; testament to how good the cayenne is and how well you've looked after yours! Is yours an V8 S?

      @carmanick I totally agree with you there. Here in the States, this car is selling more. I've seen them with off road builds as well & they're beautiful. Yes, my Cayenne is the "S" 4.5 V8 & I straight piped the exhaust.

      You've had it since new?! That's extraordinary. Very few people buy a car new and keep it beyond the first 5 years let alone to have never have sold it! That's amazing. It really is a classic. It is a car of a time, a landmark car for Porsche and SUVs, and i think it was too easily dismissed by car enthusiasts, but actually it's a real engineering marvel and a great car. I have 955 turbo - awesome cars. Drive it everyday and then on weekends I head off in low mode sports suspension…if I see some nice off-road trails I raise suspension and whack it in comfort mode. Best of both worlds!

      Hey, thanks for watching and commenting.
      The performance of the turbo and turbo S is mad for a car like this. I was always impressed by my Cayenne S, yet the Turbo has like 110hp more, which blows the mind. Quick by todays standard for sure, let alone 20 years ago!
      That is the great thing with Cayenne, it is so capable on and off road, amazing how they achieved that., if you can afford to run it, it's a car for every occasion!

    Very capable; and it never ceases to impress me driving on the highways. I have heard from many sources that the 955-957 generation is genuinely the off-roader; later generations are more for high speeds and posh living! I think this generation of the Cayenne will certainly become a future Porsche classic!

    As an owner of an '08 Turbo I have to say... If you are NOT the sort of person who likes DIY car repair, these will likely be an expensive car for you to own. These are not Hondas and they are beginning to age. With age comes wear-related maintenance. There are common problems relating to cooling system, air suspension faults, rear liftgate motors and struts, etc. Also consider coil packs, plugs, oil changes, etc. There are eight cylinders in the fun ones, which makes the consumables cost higher with all engine work. These weigh over 2 tons. They wear out brakes and tires faster. If you get one with 21" wheels then a new set of rubber is not cheap at all. They're not hard to DIY if you're mechanically inclined. But if you're paying someone else for every repair then be sure you've got the money to properly maintain the vehicle. Even if you mostly DIY it's good to have a local indy shop you can trust, and for chrissakes avoid the dealer for out of warranty work if at all possible. With prices the way they are now, these are a LOT of car for the money. They're amazing, love mine, but they need regular and proper maintenance. They are generally reliable after typical mid-life maintenance items are addressed. Oh ALSO ... 957 is better than 955 at the very least bc of better coolant system design and reduced chance of bore scoring. The 957 is the 955 with some big kinks worked out from the factory. In closing.... if you're the type that wants a car that just keeps running without hassle and you're not prepared to maintain a car like this then just get a used Acura MDX or something. Leave these to the people who will take care of them, because they really are amazing.

    • @carmanick
      @carmanick  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Thanks for the comments. Absolutely, my video is not a buying guide but yes the components are certainly expensive, not just because they are for a Porsche, but because they are large and high performance.
      I did all the work on the cayenne myself, most of the things that you say! Coil here and there, rear discs and pads, exhaust swap (it had a straight through when I bought it!), boot struts (a proper phaff but certainly doable!), window regulator (that was a proper job, having to remove the door frame and rivet it all), engine mount etc. But in all honesty the car was very reliable, most of those things I wouldn't consider were reliability but things that should be done but aren't critical (bar the coils and brakes of course).
      For a 19 year old car that's well used, I was very surprised by how good mine was, but I was cautious about the piston slap and the coolant pipes, and any warning lights!
      Yeah I'm sure the 957 did resolve many things, the 955 was a big new car program and there would've been lots of teething problems they would've looked to resolve when they could. I prefer the styling of the 955, but no doubt the 957 would be the better car. Thanks for watching. Hopefully my video is true to the thoughts of other 955 owners!

      @@carmanick The pistons for the naturally aspirated engines are cast.
      Cayenne Turbo Piston are forged.
      Cayenne Turbo Piston Cross Section
      The pistons of the naturally aspirated engine have different combustion bowls than the turbocharged engine. The bowls in the pistons for the turbo engine are much deeper in order to reduce the compression ratio.
      The cylinder head for the Cayenne S is designed in two pieces. It consists of the cylinder head and the camshaft housing with the lifter guides and the camshaft bearings. This multi-piece construction offers the best design for the use of high-heat resistant aluminum alloys to handle maximum specific loads. The exchange of gases is managed by 4 valves per cylinder, which are operated directly by hydraulic self-adjusting lifters. The two intake and two exhaust valves are arranged in a V, with a valve angle of 29.6o.
      Cayenne Turbo Cylinder Head
      The cylinder head design of the Cayenne Turbo is identical in principle to that of the Cayenne S, however, due to higher loading a special high-heat resistant aluminum alloy is used. The intake ports in the cylinder head have been reworked with respect to different gas velocities compared to the naturally aspirated engine.
      Valves and Valve Springs
      The valve stem diameter for the intake and exhaust valves on the Cayenne S and the Cayenne Turbo is 6 mm. The intake and exhaust valves are bi-metallic, this means different materials are used for the valve head and the lower part of the stem than for the upper part of the valve stem.
      The exhaust valves for the Cayenne Turbo are sodium- filled. The diameter of the intake valve heads is 37.1 mm and that of the exhaust valve heads is 32.5 mm for both engine versions.
      The intake and exhaust valve springs on the Cayenne S and the intake valve spring on the Turbo are single helical springs. To ensure proper closing of the exhaust valves even at higher pressures in the exhaust system, dual valve springs are installed on the exhaust side on the Cayenne Turbo.
      The intake and exhaust camshafts for both engine versions have a base diameter of 38 mm. Intake valve lift is 10 mm. Exhaust valve lift for cylinders 1, 2, 6 and 8 is 8 mm, for cylinders 3, 4, 5 and 7 exhaust valve lift is 9.85 mm

      Yes 4.5 V8, 2003. I’ve owned the car for about 12 months and love it, especially as the car only cost 3k to purchase, yes I’ve spent that again on maintenance etc. The only downside for me is the fuel economy but I new that before I purchased. I think the styling has aged really well, I didn’t like the looks when they first came out and think they could have done better in this regard. However, now it’s a car of this value, the looks are not bad at all.

      @carmanick  Před 4 měsíci

      @@TheRaven. Very nice and that's great. Yeah unfortunately they can be cheap to buy, but not necessarily cheap to run or repair! But it comes with the territory with having a sophisticated luxury car! Yeah fuel economy hits hard but at least it makes a nice sound when burning through all that fuel ;p.
      Yeah I don't think I thought much of it when new, but I actually really like the styling now. Maybe compared to newer stuff it just better proportioned or maybe it just doesn't seem as outrageous as it did back then, after every manufacturer has forced their styling on an SUV shape.
      Thanks for watching and hope you continue to enjoy your Cayenne!

    • @carmanick
      @carmanick  Před 8 měsíci +1

      They are very good value! There seems to still be a lot around despite early ones being 20 year old, which is a good sign for reliability and longevity.
      It really depends what you're after. I've not driven the V6, but what I'd say is the V8 has plenty of performance, so I'm sure the V6 is fine, and surely must have lower fuel costs, which is a big issue with the V8! If you're undecided, I guess weigh up how much you'll use it, to work out how much it'll cost to run. A V8 before March 2006 however will be about half the annual car tax than one after, as a heads up!
      There's buying guides out there, but just on V8, listen out for any bad engine sounds (piston slap) and ask if the coolant pipes (on top of the engine) have been changed to metal, as the plastic ones fail. I'm sure most have been upgraded by now
      Good luck!

      I’ve had 2 Turbos & they have both been great cars, the first one was an 03 plate that I purchased in 06 for £30k then sold for £21k 2 years later so that has been the only Porsche I’ve ever lost money on, then in 2017 I see a 04 turbo with £10k of factory extras with full history for £4750 so bought it straight away, same metallic grey as the previous one but drove just like the first even though it had 195,000 miles on it, it now has 223,000 miles & runs like a dream so don’t worry about mileage if it has oil change history.
      In nearly 7 years I’ve owned it I’ve had a few things replaced like rocker cover gaskets, drive belt, spark plugs, one coil pack & the normal oils etc but total for this was only just over £1300 in 7 years so going to keep it for now, what a Great all rounder, my only gripe is the fuel it uses but it’s not my only car so it’s worth the fuel for the performance, it is a twin turbo V8 Porsche after all.
      My advice is buy one you’ll not be disappointed.
