Half of any martial arts' effectiveness is its accompanying workout; and the ancient Hellenes had a deep and complex system of exercising that we can still learn from today.
In this video, we'll go through each section of the ancient Hellenic exercise routine. From popular exercise techniques they utilized, to how they planned and sectioned their daily drills; including their unique method of scheduling workouts called Tetras (singular) or Tetrades (plural).
With focus on both aesthetics and functionality, the ancient Olympian Workout provides a harmonious mode of exercising, worthy of the divinity in its name.

    I just realized something amazing.
At my previous school, we had a gym teacher, he’s a awesome man, and with a equally awesome body, hes has that body which makes you instantly realize how much and how long he has been training.
When some of my friends asked how he trains, he explained that he trains almost every day, but in a 4 day period exactly like described in the video.
We asked him why he structured his workout like that, and he Said it was good for body, mind and to build a routine and discipline.
He said he got the Idea from greece when he traveled there when he was much younger.

Actually, the ancient Greeks pronounced these words in a very different manner. In fact, the modern Greek pronunciation isn't an accurate way of rendering the ancient sounds at all - there were some drastic changes in the pronunciation during those past two and a half thousand years. If the ancient Greeks from the classical period heard someone speaking modern Greek they would have thought it was just some odd foreign language. It's like arguing that the proper way of pronouncing Latin is pretending that it sounded like Italian. It's fine to pronounce ancient Greek like a modern one but we must keep in mind that it's by no means better than any other pronunciation of the ancient variant.

@@erazmwratislaviensis669 true our language has gone through changes from ancient greek to Byzantine Greek then the language changed again during the revolution and it changed in around the 60s 70s i believe could be earlier to the modern version plus each region has very different dialects from from the Macedonian region to Crete to central Greece and Cyprus all have different way of speaking and the differences aren't just pronunciation but entire words that are different
But modern Greek is a good basis to understand ancient greek
In school we dedicate 6 years to ancient greek but at the end you can write and speak in it on a good level but it takes a lot of work to achieve it

The word calisthenics comes from the ancient Greek words kállos (κάλλος), which means "beauty" (to emphasize the aesthetic pleasure that derives from the perfection of the human body), and sthenos (σθένος), meaning "strength" (great mental strength, courage, strength, and determination). It is the art of using one's body weight as resistance in order to develop physique.

As a fun fact, the word halterofilia still means weightlifting (the discipline/sport) and altera still means weight (the object you lift not the force) in Spanish.
If you are curious, it has an H; as far as I know; because the H used to indicate grammatical gender in ancient greek and the word is femenine in Spanish.

Proparaskeve is actually amazing. No more feelings of shame as I fail to do this overly ambitious workout that felt perfectly doable because I was riding the highs of motivation and inspiration one can only have while binging fitness content at 3 am. Now the workout is tailored to me in the real time. And it's an actual part of the workout, so it doesn't feel like a moment of weakness if I lower my expectations for the day.

So much ancient wisdom here. Like I structure my workouts in similar ways just intuitively. I you could say that I do a miniature tetrades in my day to day and a larger one in how I structure the workouts.
So I will do whatever it be not at full intensity for a set. Then do it with full intensity. And then often will simply go through the motions and imagine my muscles still under full strain the whole time. Then really focus on technique.
So a great example, on my sumo exercise days. I start with shiko to warm up, then do slow suriashi, then jumping suriashi, then fast suriashi, then weighted jumping suriashi, then weighted suriashi. Then I thought about actual matches and the timing of both hands down tachiai. I then in incorporated as soon as both hands touch I go. I did regular suriashi and jumping suriashi with this and noticed the increase in intensity. Then I grabbed a 25lb kettlebell to simulate have to not only move as soon as both hands down but also grab for something like the belt. So I had it sitting just far enough that I have to be quick with my hands. So both hands down, grab the kettlebell for both suriashi and jumping suriashi.
Then stretches etc. As for breathing I am a Buddhist and meditate/ use the proper breathing techniques to calm my breath.
My weight days follow a similar formula of building up the motion, working the entire group of muscles and antagonist muscles, etc.

It appears in a lot of pro athletes workouts and even the ancients realized that. Even most slaves through history got a day of rest since it simply works better. It's also why many religions have a day of rest that often features mediation, we in the west just don't always call it meditation but rather prayer or visualization but it wasn't much different from what they do in the east when we call it "meditation" instead.

    Hello! Amazing video!
Just have one quick question about the daily training phases. In minute 3:43, what do you mean exactly by sectioning? Is it a "planning" part of the next phase "core" workout? Or it includes exercises in itself? I find it quite a hard training of it's healthy workout, then some HIIT sets and then the main core workout! I believe it must be the first one, but it doesn't really make sense to me to have a pause for planning outside the initial planning phase of the daily workout. Could you clarify please? Thank you!
