- Welcome as we share with you a one of a kind skiff rebuild on a $500 budget!! (Details and Performance specs listed below) In this episode we take an old Carolina Skiff J12 model and turn it into a head turner that is one of the funnest boats we've built to date! Thanks for watching and be sure to like/ comment or subscribe if you want more content like this! Thanks for watching and enjoy!
PERFORMANCE / HP specs:
6 hp 4 Stroke: We first tested the skiff with a 6hp which resulted in NOT being able to get on plane w 2 adults. This also was Pre Hull extensions. The only way the boat would get on plane was with Chelsea alone resulting in a 12 mph top speed.
15 hp : Top Speed 25 mph (23 mph w/ 2 adults and gear)
A majority of the clips in this video were filmed with the 15 hp outboards. We ran both an older yamaha and Mercury 2 strokes resulting in impressive performance and an extremely shallow draft. This was definitely the PERFECT motor size for this skiff!
20 hp: Top Speed 28 mph (under propped/hitting rev limit)
We threw on an older 2 stroke Mariner which was the same weight/motor as a 25 hp, the boat did well with the added weight and performance was definitely better, but.... we didnt run enough prop. 10 pitch prop was used. It could most likely have used a 12 pitch based on revs (measured with Tiny Tach). Overall, great performance , deeper draft, and definitely used more fuel.
BUDGET:
-Bare hull: Freebie, found in Okeechobee through word of mouth. $0
-Materials: Resin, Gelcoat, cloth, sandpapers, tape, stainless hardware, etc $200
-Grab Bar: Purchased from Marine Parts Outlet in Stuart $50
-Grab Bar Welding: Welded at D+M Welding in Jensen Beach $20
-Outboard Bracket: D+M sold and cut C CHannel to specs given $40
-Console: Found in junk pile of local yard $0
-Cushion : Purchased at Marine Parts Outlet in Stuart $20
-Cushion Base: PVC board cut from bigger Home Depot Piece est $10
-Fuel: Run from STuart to Okeechobee $20
-Core Material for transom: remnant piece from dumpster diving $0
-Rub Rail: re used original ( minor trimming) $0

I am a boatbuilder and obsess over stupid details that are not seen and that don't matter. I think there is a lot to learn from this guy. Just get it done and get it on the water. "Perfect is perfect, but done is better." Sweet boat!
The pursuit of perfection is the enemy of happiness
I'm a welder, so my fab brain is working overtime to translate this into Aluminum. What a fun build, well done!
When I was a kid we had a 10' smoker craft that weighed 63lb. We ran a 6hp johnson which was the limit for that boat and once it was on plane that boat flew. So, I am sure you can keep the weight down with the profile and hang a 20hp and nothing can touch you.
Same here
Oh man! That is a super cool little boat! Let's go fishing in it! 😀😀😀
Ninja!!! Yes buddy, let’s go!!! You bring the steaks!! 😜🙌🏼
what an awesome thing to do to a carolinaskiff im set back at how you went about it, its so simple anyone could do this, thanks for putting this together its given me a drive to try to make one of these, also glad i found your channel.
Thanks so much for watching snd the thoughtful comments. Glad you enjoyed and stoked for you/ your own build! Cheers!
Starsky and Hutch-“Do it” one of my favorites
Starsky and Hutch!!! lol. Love the build!
Great content. Love your creativity when it comes to acquiring materials for a project. The last load of plywood that came in was harvested from a remodel. I'm using all of this on my current build on my channel. Love your channel..👍 The Lotec
Super cool, I could totally see this for flats fly fishing
Thank you for the comment! Yes, it actually is a super stable / perfect skiff for the flats :)
That thing is so awesome. I want one so bad. Gonna have to look and hope I can do what you did. DIY baby!
Forrest, this is badass!!! Just stumbled along this vid, love the skiff, awesome work!!!
Brittany!! Such a small world! Glad you liked the build! Hope you’re well!
Awseome to see how creative this build is
This is incredible ! Great job. 🙌🏼
Thank you so much! Cheers 🤙🏼
That things got “I Got Pulled Over By The Harbor Master” written all over it!
This is awesome! I go by your shop all the time and I think I saw you working on it and told my wife I wanted to do something like this with our jon boat
Hi Nick, no kidding haha! Small world! I’m no longer at that shop area, pretty much do all my stuff across the st now outdoors. Yay... sunburned AND fiberglass covered ! Haha. Cheers!
This looks so fun to drive!
Me gusto mucho ese barquito que hiciste, te felicito, es algo sencillo pero se ve super divertido... haz otro.
Very ingenious repurposed boat. Thanks for sharing
Thanks so much for watching and the positivity! Cheers!
I love that pic you have of "the original jetski" and the way you modeled your wild skiff like it. I want to build one too!
Haha, thanks Edward! It was a fun build and I highly recommend it! Cheers!

Did you have to trim the front of the boat to have that seam look the way it does? I love this boat and am obsessed with how you built it! It looks like it would be an awesome ride, you did an amazing job
Nice build. Looking forward to your future boat restoration videos.
Thank so much! Glad you enjoyed it , new video will be up soon 🤙🏼
Awesome bro. I love when people build stuff instead of going and buying a new skiff.
Thanks so much 👊🏼. And I couldn’t agree more! Building your own is the way to go!
Starsky and Hutch - Do it. Just moved to north palm area; really inspired by your boat builds!
Thanks Phillip and glad you’re digging the builds! I’ve got some sweet ones coming soon.. hint hint. And heck yeah, you’re local! Great area for finding / building skiffs like this. 🤙🏼
Thanks for the inspiration bro, building my own version, cross between seatow and tango skiff
Yewww #GotSki
Your channel is gonna do really well if you keep doing stuff like this. Great job brother! 🤙🔥
Thank you so much for the positivity and encouragement! Glad you like it! 🙌🏼
If he lives to tell about it!
Dude! Just do it! LOVE THAT SKIFF! I gotta build one.
Great job saving this boat from the scrap yard!
Next, please show it outfitted for a day fishing trip.
Thank you so much and right?!?! Too many boats out there that just get crushed/scrapped!!!
Very cool... that thing is wild!
Thank you! It’s a wild ride for sure!
Hey man ever thought of building an inflatable island for the kids to play on? There aren't many builds on CZcams. We go to the sandbar and a bunch of people have these roll up foam mats, would really like to build something foldable or inflatable so it can be carried on the boat and doesn't need registration. Looking for inspiration.....
This was an awesome build. Well done 👏
I appreciate you. Thank you for sharing your skills knowledge and experience
Great job
Very cool!
Absolutely love the outcome of this build! ....... "Do it, just do it" from the remake of Starsky and Hutch. Am I the first? I didn't read all the comments...
Him and his buddy in the preview look like they are fixing to just go do it. !!!@l l
I had this idea, so naturally I figured someone else did too. So I asked the internet and it brought me here. Cool build! You get a new subscriber ;-)
Haha, the wonderful World Wide Web. Cheers and thank you!
Did you build one yet?
I build boats for a living. 25 plus years. We build from 21 foot up to 62 foot. I would love to find a project like this to refit. Good job.
i love it its a great job that u did on there and yess i love that thing
Thank you Luis! Glad you like the build! 🙌🏼
Real cool lil skiff
Thanks so much! It’s a fun ride indeed!
I love your message an old guy told me he just piss on everybody else you’re building it for yourself who cares what they think just do it you only live once don’t let others comments stop you from having a ball nice job
Great build !!
Nice work
That's awesome😮
Amazing!!!! Great job on the boat. You need to start selling these!
That’s cool as hell
8:18 we build it,, they claim it.. I love the whip sound. 😁
Hahaha. Right?!?! Some things in life are just easier to accept then battle! 🙃. Cheers !
That thing is awesome! Has to be loads of fun!
Thank you! It most definitely is! In fact, I think its pretty much impossible to ride it and not wear an ear to ear grin haha
@@diywaterworld I would imagine so! Several years ago I raised the deck height on a Carolina Skiff so it was basically flush with the gunnel... I did it so I wasn't stepping up and down all the time as we worked around the docks. Didn't realize how much more fun it would make the ride as well!
Nice! I’ve seen a couple of the commercial guys around here do theirs similar , super functional, better line of sight , and definitely easier to get in and out of. They’re sweet! 🤙🏼
That's a cool build. I haven't spent a lot of time on the water, so these may be basic questions, but here goes:
1) Is there a "false floor" in this skiff, like hollow space between your feet and the outside of the hull?
2) The drain holes in the stern. Do they go straight into the flotation boxes you installed, or did I see that wrong?
3) As small as this boat is, could you conceivably fix the outboard in position and steer by leaning? Not at slow speeds, of course, but it might be a fun way to get out there and carve back and forth.
Anyway, I like it!
Hi Mark, thanks for watching and leaving a comment and great questions! Here's some answers :)
1. Yes, the factory floor/deck is still there the way the boat was originally designed. Under the fiberglass deck Carolina Skiff used a foam filled/ bulkhead stringer system. The entire "under" deck is sealed and filled with foam so its got a ton of floatation.
2. You indeed saw that correctly. Those were the factory drain hole locations and they are sealed from inside of the floatation chamber (fiberglassed over) Not shown in the video is scuppers I added to the boat so that it can be self bailing. I have indeed swamped the boat on purpose and it did well, self bailed rather quickly due to the added floatation chambers as well as the console is glassed in/ totally sealed so that becomes an air chamber to help.
3. and haha, yes! I like the way you think! The original "old school" photo showing the skiff was just like that, steer by leaning. For this skiff we tried just leaning and due to the hull design and beam it really did,t react much to the leaning, but the second you combined a little steering input along with a lean.... CARVE CENTRAL!!!!!!!
thanks again for the questions, cheers!
I love it!!! I wish I had one of those for a dinghy instead of a solo skiff.
Thank you Shawn! You’ll just have to keep an eye out for an old Carolina skiff! 😜
First I'm trying to start my own business.
Looks great, nice work.
Thanks so much!! Cheers!
Looks like fun. I'd put some steering cables on the outboard to a pulley each side then to a D on a belt around the hip area. Then when you lean you steer.
I made one from 12 foot aluminum Jon boat welded beaver pods on back of it put 20 horse merc 4 stroke on it with front control stick steering and then added power trim with a jack plate it does very good real shallow and 35 miles an hour
Awesome video really enjoyed watching 🤙
thank you so much for the comment. Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers!
Sick!
Cool build
Perfect inshore Texas wading skiff.
very cool build, I'm inspired to pickup a "junk" skiff and see what I can do!
Yes David! That's the spirit! Love hearing about old beater boats being fixed up. cheers!
pretty impressive
So cool!❤😎
Great job man! That would be a perfect flats boat!
Thank you so much! And yes, you can actually stand on the console to sight/fish from. Super stable and a shallow running little beast. :)
@@diywaterworld I could see that with a micro power pole on the back too!
super cool build, came to this video from lumberyard skiffs. was interested in a micro skiff to build and island hop in 10,000. now that ive seen this i think modding an old hull would be fun and cheaper! thank you
Thanks so much and let me tell you, this is Music to my ears! Just Do it !! And I couldn’t agree more, perfect style skiff for 10,000 islands. I’d love to see what you build! Cheers and good luck with the build, I’d love to see it when it’s underway! 🤙🏼
*You shoud name it the Immersion Blender.*
@@diywaterworld Good friend, nice boat and what are its measurements please, if I can build it, unless it looks like it
nope
That’s pretty sweet!
Thanks so much! It's a fun ride for sure!!
I have a j12 it's amazing honestly this video hurt me alittle at first but you made something cool out of it lol
Haha, yeah for a min after I cut it down I was like…. Ummmm…. I just butchered a perfect j12 Lol. But it turned out good and I was stoked with the result :) . Cheers!
AWESOME BUILD! How much of the gunnel did you cut down? How much gunnel do you have now?
I freaking love this my dude. My family would love this I'm gonna give it a try! Thank you!
I hope you do it! Good luck!
Looks like fun! Good job buddy! You could probably carry that thing to the beach to launch it.
Thanks Frank! And yeah, a couple guys could carry it for sure haha! Cheers buddy!
I love this build! Does it have self-bailing scupper holes in the stern? I see what looks to be holes back there, but I couldn't really make it out clearly.
You’re literally the man..such a solid approach and sick outcome
Haha, glad you like the build! Thanks for watching!!
What a fun water scooter! I want one!
Iy kne
Definitely doing this
Hell yes!! Do it! 💪🏼
Awesome Informational Educational video experience Y'alls
Real crafty
OK, I heard that whip crack. Still laughing. Love ya.
😂😂😂😂 whhaaapow!!!
Nice!!!
Dude you sound like Tom Selleck ... no joke , great build !
🤣🤣 magnum PI 🕵️♀️ haha!
Just picked up an old j12 . Getting ready to start the build. How did you determine the slope of the bow and get it even on both side. Also how high are the cut down sides from the floor…12”?
You should totally start refurbishing these and selling them! Would make a killing man, this is awesome. Ill buy one.
Haha, i love the idea Jay! Only thing is , these Carolina Skiffs have gone waaaaay up in price. It's honestly ridiculous what folks are getting for them right now! Cheers buddy!
Hello, I am jazzed by your builds. I'm intrigued by your sailboat to skiff build. I'm considering picking up a similar but smaller boat and modifying the back end, basically continuing the wide section aft and making the aft section basically flat.
Sponsons aft. thinking all ply build, glass to original. I've the skills for getting the build sweet, but over my head in attaching , glassing to original boat. I'd like to pull you ear if possible. Problems attaching new ply to old gelcoal to etc. Thx
Boyd just up the street in Chs SC
Love the channel !
Thanks so much Steve! Thanks for watching and letting us know!
BEST Mangrove boat ever!!!!!
Cheers. And I couldn’t agree more!!! 🤙🏼
Great video
Thank you Ruben! Wait till you see the next one!
I love the surfing. Tohatsu 5hp 2 stroke with an 8x8 prop should give you 15mph. The motor barely tops 40lb. Use a separate fuel tank to keep the transom as light as possible.
Haha thanks William! Great suggestions and right on the money! Weight savings / distribution is KEY on these small skiffs! Cheers!
Wr I n g
That's a awesome built !
Question: what happen if bunch of water come in side ? Will it sink ? How do you deal with when bunch of water come in ? Thank you
Great question and thanks for asking! The boat is actually self bailing , so any water that could possibly wash over the sides essentially goes right out. It also has sealed floors and chambers giving it WAY more floatation then needed just in case it takes a big wave and long time for water to self bail. :) ( I’ve tested it. Lol)
When you added the boxes did it eliminate the self bailing part of the boat?
Could you do a video talking about how you calculated the floatation of those add ons?
Rad. Thanks
Thank you for the comment and for watching! cheers!
Хорошая работа!!!
Bro that is bad ass
Thanks so much!!! Glad you like it!
I need to get one
I was wondering how much speed you could get off of your 15, and if it’s 2 or 4 stroke. Thank you for making this, I’ve watched it so many times over the last few years and last year I’m finally at the last stages of making my own 13ft runabout.
Ну ты крутой мужик! Начинаю завтра строить такой в Севастополе (Россия)
New best channel on youtube!
Haha yes!! Thank you so much Eric! Glad you’re liking it!
That came out sick..this would’ve been a great step by step how to build series..
Hi Francisco , yeah I agree completely. In future builds I’m trying to video more of the process for this purpose. It’s quite time consuming and hard when there’s only one person and one camera haha. But I’m working on it! Cheers and thanks fir the input
great job , how mush cost the motor??
Skip the gelcoat. It's only used for economy of scale in factories. It's porous and requires repeated polishing and waxing to seal it. Use epoxy primer and topcoat. Most high-end 'glass boats are painted these days. Very cool little skiff.
Would be great for fishing flats i think.
Stop whatever else you're doing and manufacture these. You have me sold.
Cool build, I was looking in the comments and may have overlooked it but where is the fuel tank and how did you route it to the motor?
Thanks for the question Matthew, it’s actually mounted inside the console. Slides in easy. I then had a hole drilled and the fuel line ran out / along the gunnel / and to the motor. :) cheers!
Hahaha enjoyed this one
Can a flat bottom fiberglass boat be modified into a cat hull skiff??
Such a fun build! Can you tell me please what size motors you used? It looks like several different ones in the videos
Thank you! Yes, started with a 6hp 4 stroke, then 15 hp 2 stroke then 20 hp 2 stroke. Details on each motor / performance is listed in video description. Enjoy!
Most of the clips ( all drone shots) were with 15 hp. :)
Baseball bat handle wrap would work good on the aluminum bar
Nice! I’ll give that a try for sure! Thanks for the comment/idea. 👊🏼
Where could I buy one of the frames like this at ?
Where I'm from we don't have Carolina Skiffs, so I guess I grew up under a rock, but then again you probably have no idea what a Clackacraft or a Lavro is...
Great video just the same!
Oh man... inserted my foot into mouth on that one! 😬. And you’re right, I don’t know those manufacturers. But I’m googling them now! Thank you for the comment and glad you liked the skiff. Cheers !
Did you buy an old flat skiff and then add the features in this video or did you build the boat from scratch?
