Madonna was literally the female half of the 80s , the male half was Duran Duran. she was bigger than any singer/band could ever hope to be now. I don't know what's wrong with the music scene now, but in the 80s, an entire city would come to stop for a number one artist, but now, if you have a billion views on youtube, nobody would blink an eye if you sat in Piccadilly Circus in London. Fame then was 'fame' , fame now is deposable

even after decades of hits, "borderline" is my absolute favourite madonna song. don't think it'll ever be topped for me.
i prefer early madonna ("like a virgin", "get into the groove", "burning up") but also loved "ray of light".
fun fact: in the music video her boyfriend is played by her at-one-time-boyfriend, jellybean benitez, who also produced her music. (edit: so it's actually actor/singer louie louie who plays her boyfriend and they actually did have a fling after meeting on the video shoot lol).

I agree. If you compare this song to her other hits from the earlier albums, for example Holiday, Like a Virgin or Into the Groove. While those are fun and groovy songs, they are kind of repetitive and lack the more creative songwriting aspect what Borderline has.

I forgot how young she sounded on her first album! I was in college when this came out and it was SO influential. Little mini-Madonnas were everywhere with the "goomie" bracelets, layered clothing and frosted hair etc. Then she scored with her movie debut "Desperately Seeking Susan" followed by "Like a Virgin"--she just kept getting bigger and bigger. Still, we all thought she'd be a cute flash in the pan---which started to change around the time of "Open Your Heart"....One thing I noticed even then was how much better her videos were than most other artists of the time. She was recruiting good artists, stylists, film-makers, choreographers and photographers like Herb Ritts to collaborate with her---she was practically a co-op, before it became the standard. She was definitely her own thing. By the time of "Like a Prayer" and "Vogue", love her or hate her, it was impossible to deny her indelibility. She was here to stay. She remained popular but after ""Erotica" her success started to wane a little. Then she bounced back with "Ray of Light". And the beat goes on...

It's funny, when Borderline, the first Madonna video on MTV, came on, seeing Madonna was stunningly shocking. Her hair... such a mess sometimes and so coifed others. Her clothes were SO different than anything any of us had seen. Jewelry. Everything was so... crazy-odd-fantastic! The music was secondary, if not tertiary, to her looks and chutzpah. She was clearly _strong_ and going to make a name for herself. I was 23 when I was introduced to Madonna and pre- _Ray of Light_ are my fave Madonna seasons. Love that girl!

It’s kinda amazing looking back now just how fashion forward Madonna was in the early 80s. She basically created THE look that all teen girls would emulate for the next 10 years or so. This video looks like it could’ve been made in 1989 instead of 1983.

I think it’s important to understand that some artists were more than the music. Madonna was a moment in time. In the 80s she became popular for fun music but her rebel fashion and persona made her an icon. EVERYONE started dressing like her and trying to sound like her. It was crazy. She reinvented herself over and over again by being provocative, changing her hair and fashion dramatically and pushing the envelope in ways the world wasn’t ready for. There’s just not anyone like her and many have tried to imitate her.

Man, I'd almost forgotten this version of Madonna. It's hard to describe how massively popular she was becoming around this time. And when she dropped Like a Virgin in '85 there no stopping her momentum. it seemed like overnight millions of teen girls raided Madonna's closet ... or kidnapped her stylist. Come to think of it, I believe it might have been the first time in rock history where teen girls in the millions were going crazy over a female entertainer the way the previous generation did over Elvis and the Beatles.

I was in my 20’s the whole 80’s decade, and the 5 biggest superstars were Micheal Jackson, Prince , Madonna, Tina Turner and Bruce Springsteen, even tho we had an absolute weather of incredible talent . It just seemed like that style was popular and worked for her in the beginning. Britney Spears is another example of a singer using a different singing voice, though she’s never quite let go of it, unlike Madonna. Best wishes for Madonna and a speedy recovery. Madonna at the beginning. Hit the MTV generation with a bang - "Holiday", "Burnin Up", "Borderline", "Lucky Star" etc. Her first two albums were fire and then only became rockets after that. No one at the time had her style, her attitude and her charisma. She made a huge impact on a generation of girls and guys. In high school so many girls dressed like her and I know she was one of my crushes at the time. She had the attitude that she was who she was and made no excuses for it and that allowed so many people to come out of their shells and flip the finger to the expected roles in society. At this stage she had no idea just how influential she would be on the world, but that would soon change. Great song!
Check out "Burnin Up", "Like a Virgin", "Papa Don't Preach", "Dress You Up", "Express Yourself", "Cherish". Too many to list. Keep going down this rabbit hole and how about some more of the King of Pop - Michael Jackson. Been a while for him as well.

Like Susan Sarandon said about Madonna in the 90"s: "There was music before Madonna and music after Madonna.". She truly had that impact. She changed and inspired the musical landscape and cultural landscape that much. Her musical open-mindedness and creative brilliance and talent and drive was unstoppable and decisive and so far ahead of her time that ppl still haven't been able to catch up to her impact and influence on popular culture. She paved the way and all anyone could do was to stand in utter amazement, learn and follow. She did it all and followed her own muse and took the chances, broke down the barriers and smashed down the walls like no one else before or since. She was and is a fearless pioneer and visionary and marched to her own drum no matter what was thrown at her or put in her path. She arrived alone in NY when she was 17 years old without a thing to her name except drive and ambition and $37 in her pocket and through hard work and talent and determination she became and remains the highest selling female entertainer of all time and is second to only the Beatles in worldwide sales. She has had more than 50 number one singles on The Billboard Dance Chart (almost twice as much as her closest competitor) and is the highest selling solo touring artist of all time (holding three spots in the top 10)etc etc. This list goes on and on for days. She is one of a kind and we will never see the likes of her again. Activist, freedom fighter, humanitarian, rebel without peer and unstoppable force of nature. So just bow down bitches. Maybe react to her most controversial video 1991's Justify my Love, where she disintegrates the walls like a nuclear bomb. Or for a dance banger check out 2000's Music video or 2006's Hung Up.
