  • www.sunnybrook.ca // Tummy time exercises for your baby - instructions from Sunnybrook's Women & Babies Program staff.
    When you take your baby home from the hospital, you will have been given instructions to put your baby to sleep on his or her back. But because of this, we need to give the baby opportunities to develop shoulder and abdominal muscles, and to prevent flattening of the back or side of the baby's head.
    Every time you change your baby's diaper, turn your baby gently over onto his or her tummy. Gently put pressure on his or her bum, and bring his or her elbows in front of the shoulders. This will encourage your baby to lift his or her head. Do this for one or two minutes to ensure good strength of your baby's shoulder and abdominal muscles.

    Doing this every diaper change is a genius idea! My baby hated tummy time, but doing tummy time every diaper change for a minute from birth will definitely teach them to tolerate it.

    Our newborn is only a month and by the 3rd week his neck strength is quite frightening to visitors. We would have him on our shoulder for burping and he just throw his whole head back with control. Even now he's only a month and a week old he's already rolling on his side.

      New moms should stop browsing their hand phones, lost in their own world and start focusing on their baby's movements.
      What all new moms should do is to learn to be a mother first, breast feed your baby for a certain age rather than browsing what is the best milk on the net !!!
      Focus on your baby to see if it's taking its natural moves, instead of watching latest tik toks. Seek expertise only if you notice your baby doesn't behave normal !!
      The problems with new moms are, they are ready for marriage and to make babies, but not ready to be a mother !!!

    I had a 15 month old in therapy with severe reflux. I had to be inventive to get her to do tummy time. I place her on her tummy and of course she raised her head and wanted up. So a placed a doll just out of her reach and made it into a game. She reached for the doll and at the same time flexed the muscles in her tummy. She laughed while trying to reach the doll. Of course I let her play with it for a bit as a reward for reaching. I offered other toys and cookies. You have to be more inventive with older children bc they are more mobile.

  • @cookiecocothechi-chisister4685

    We do daily tummy time with the NICU preemies as part of their therapy and some of them actually don’t mind it at all (which means that they do what they’re supposed to without fussing and/or crying). And then we’ve got the micro-screamers and the micro-screamers absolutely hate tummy time so they just lay there on their bellies and scream their heads off the entire time until tummy time is over. Luckily since the micro-screamers voices are still extremely low and weak due to their prematurity, all the other preemies in the room can still get their sleep/rest without being disturbed, Lol.

His pediatrician said he can lay on his stomach and side as long as I'm watching him and he is supervised the whole time. Otherwise he lays on his back.

  • @RocksBoBo
    @RocksBoBo Před 5 lety +2

    So many ignorant people in this comment section. Just because people didn't do something a certain way in the past, does not mean the new ways of doing things are wrong. As humans, we must constantly learn and improve the way we do things. Sure, you can do things the old way, and it may turn out fine, but it isn't for the best. If your baby doesn't tolerate being on their stomach on a surface, then just hold the baby against your chest so they can practice using their neck muscles that way.
    As for the sleeping on their backs, it reduces risk of suffocation and death. Why risk it? Don't ignore this advice, it could cost your child's life. That should be enough motivation to follow it. No matter how big or small the risk, why risk at all, when it comes to your child's life?
    At the end of the day, ask your pediatrician for advice if you are curious about the necessity of things like in this video.

    • @luvdocumentary
      @luvdocumentary Před 5 lety

      It's extremely annoying and counterproductive when any innovation or progress in society is challenged with the sole argument that something was done/not done in a certain way in the past. I would love if someone had documented an anecdote when the wheel was invented and people challenging that invention because they prefer to drag things around the hard way just because that's how their ancestors did. While traditions are important, they have their appropriate moments. For example, follow all the traditions you want when it comes to celebrating a birthday or how you make your family's cake. However, for things like immunization vaccines and food safety, be open minded about it. Otherwise, we would still building using asbestos and led plumbing.

    ok, but why? what's the reason for this? Will he not be able to build strength later without doing this? Do we have bad time, so that we have to do this quickly? We do this, only to pass time? What's the reason for doing this?

    They can suffocate beneath blankets. So it's safer to clothe them warmly and skip the blanket

    But I think babies know what to do at certain points in their growing time to strengthen their muscles for the activities like turning, sitting, walking etc. why should we do this? Babies know what they should do.

      Thanks for watching, Kemi! Tummy Time can typically start right away in healthy babies. However, we recommend speaking with your family doctor or paediatrician after your baby arrives to see what is right for you and your baby.
