- During the PS2 era, there was this very interesting looking TV commercial for Jak & Daxter 3. Looking back at it, what if Jak 4 looked the same?
Back in 2013, Naughty Dog had explained why they cancelled Jak & Daxter 4. The game wasn’t really in development yet, they had simply come up with concept art. A year later, it was explained that it wasn’t up to the strength. In 2015, veteran from Naughty Dog explained that the team was no longer interested with cartoony games.
I personally think Jak 4, if it ever happens, should be handled by a new developer.

ramon fisher I totally agree with you make insomniac make Jak 4 they have crossed over games (in the second game Ratchet played the first J&D game if you waited long enough) who wouldn't like insomniac take on the Jak 4 project, Sony would green light the series and I would be into it!!
Personally, I would hate it if they made Jak 4 realistic. I think that if Jak 4 ever does get made, it should be cartoony and authentic to the rest of the series. When Naughtydog had first created Jak and Daxter, they had made a great mix of a cartoony graphics, platforming, funny punchlines, and of course in the later games, shooting and racing. If Naughtydog were to make Jak 4, it should be authentic, and it should share the same mix as the other games.

I don't mind some amazing graphics, but if Jak 4 comes out and its heavily reliant on mocap and looks realistic, I may not buy it.
Crash and Ratchet got HD remakes, now I'm just waiting for Spyro and Jak

The Crash remake good but the Ratchet and Clank remake was a bust to me at least because the movie flopped and so much of what Ratchet and Clank great in the originals were thrown out of the window. I like Crash more because at least Activision and Vicarious Visions stuck to the roots of what made the originals great.
That's why IG should go back to the classic series, I want them to explore the story of the Lombaxes, so much potential!

Realistic in a cartoony way would have worked better. Like Ratchet and Clank ACIT (particularly the cutscenes), the graphics are just fantastic but it still maintains its original feel.

If Jak 4 comes out, I would like Daxter to have more playability. He's my favourite character and I think he has potential for some fun gameplay. I imagine him as more of a Rocket Raccoon type character. A small, funny character, but very capable in battle. I think they should make the characters seem more mature, but still keep their signature charm and personality.
I could imagine more playable parts, the game Daxter proves just how fun it can be :)

It's always been about money, sad thing though is that it seems they've forgotten that Good games sell the big bucks. Pretty sad that we got some of the best selling consoles in history but they struggle selling the number of games a PS2 game could have

The whole Mar situation? They can easily put that aside and go with the idea that Jak was simple named after his ancestor. As for young Jak, yes there's a loop which takes place in Jak 2 only. Old Jak moves on later.

We all just wish we could sit down at the jak and daxter developers' team table and remind them of what made J&D great. Tell them about our countless hours, our playthroughs. For me that game was the first game I ever played on my PS2 and since I was so young back then (I'm 19 now) Jak's personality inspired me to be like him. I probably am training to be a police officer because of him, his heroism, kindness and good moral inspired me... My cousin has a tattoo of the Underground group jak was in in Jak 2. If the world gave me 10 minutes with those guys I'm sure their vision would change...

I too am 18 years old and am still replaying the trilogy for the 5th time, even with all these other good games on the ps3 and 4 Jax and Daxter remain my favorite by far
Naughty Dog could easily make a fortune if the created a new Jack game with all of the qualities the originals had with the game mechanics and graphics technology that are available now. Think about how interactive and capture the world would be knowing the power of console now they could easily make an amazing Jak and Daxter game that fans would absolutely love

I'm with you , theres no way they're going to back to it. Maybe another studio that are fans of Jak and Daxter and are able to capture its essence will make a proper sequel , and thats the best case scenario in my mind.

It actually might happen. Both studios made their mark combining interesting gameplay with truly heartstopping scenery. If ND drops the ball, Insomniac is our best hope for something closer to the original trilogy, or even JAK X.
I'd also love to see something like Constructo Mods for weaponry and more Eco powers.
If the ball could get rolling, this may be our best hope as fans. I just hope it wouldn't get oversimplified like the new Ratchet and Clank. More like A Crack in Time, maybe.

My idea for Jak 4: After the events of Jak X, Jak and Daxter have become older and they have been living their lives relatively uneventful with Jak taking the occasional odd job to keep his skills sharp, with one day he goes to Onin and Samo's to talk about the whole thing about him being "The Mar". Samos speculates that if he really is Mar then something big must have happened for him to have gone to the past and build Haven city.
One job eventually leads him to take a job on a mining crew who are testing out an advanced drilling machine who need someone to help deal with Metalheads that sometimes pop up when they open up a hole in a cavern but they are usually just a small number that are easily dealt with. However when they open up a cavern there is some kind of Precursor structure down there. Once Jak and the crew make it past the defenses they come to a room with some kind of case covered in chains and suspended off the ground made of gold. The crew start to break the chains to get at the gold case as jak notices a mural.
The mural shows a story of the Precursors fighting against a Metalhead horde led by a creature that looked familiar to him. He then sees them seal the creature away in a case looking very similar to the one they found in the room with the last line on the bottom saying the creatures name "Kor".
Jak comes to the realisation that Kor is in the case but before he could do anything Kor is released! Jak tries to save as many of the crew as possible as they try to escape the tunnel and hopefully seal it on the way out, if to do nothing but by them time. He does succeed with him getting the warning out to Haven city so they can prepare for war. When Jak returns to the city he is left in thought as to how Kor was down there sealed off for who knows how long, with Samos saying that maybe the event that causes him to go to the past could have something to do with Kor.
Eventually Kor and his Horde break through the rubble and slaughter the forces sent there in a tidal wave of the creatures. With everywhere being overrun by the sheer numbers the people in the outlying settlements fall to Haven city to hide behind the walls and defences which were the only things to help keep the Metalheads at bay. While Jak is fighting off the horde, Kor is searching for a timegate to send himself back in time so he can destroy them in a time where they are defenseless.
With the main horde defeated Samos mentions that if it wasn't for Haven city they would have been destroyed by the Metalheads, which gives Jak a pause as he comprehends what it meant. When he learns of Kors plan they intercept him and before he could finish putting in his destination Jak shoots the controlled causing it to go haywire, Jak using his light eco powers flies into Kor with his shield activated sending them both through time.
When Jak comes to he is in a crowd looking for the human form of Kor as he transformed to get away without Jak noticing, knowing that he could never destroy the people and beat Jak.....not in this time at least. With Jak now stranded in this time he eventually comes to terms with the fact he isn't going back and the game ends with him setting out to build Haven city and keep a vigil for when Kor comes back.

It's like if Borderlands mad a new game and changed it's art style. people would destroy it.

Going with this style is the best approach. I've been saying this since I've seen these promos. Look at the detail of Jak's hair and Daxter's fur. IT looks amazing. It would already look realistic like this. not human realistic, but like R&C.

NG make games that everyone wants, when crash and jak came out , platform games were everywhere, now shooters are everywhere so they do shooting games. But in platformer, the developers used to create new character UNRALISTIC!! Now the characters of a game are so REALISTIC and the same. Crash is a bandicoot, who knew a bandicoot before crash?? Jak is a human but has an original design. Drake, Jole and Ellie are people like everyone, I dont hate Uncharted and the last of us but I really prefer Jak and Crash, they are more original and (most important) funniest to play
True man. As much as i love a more realistic narrative with great graphics, I just want a good game to play that is fun, memorable, and unique in its own way. Naughty Dog just isn't same it used to and it kinda makes me sad because Jak and Crash were my childhood and i loved them for it.
They just have a terrible mindset...
Jak 4 could be a great opportunity to give some much needed spot light to Dark Jak.
Jason Rubin and Andy Gavin, along with the original voice cast, could go all out and make an M-Rated Jak 4, allowing for even more story potential on Jak’s Dark side.
Dark Jak is such an underrated icon that could have driven a strong story narrative. Had Jak’s battle with Dark Eco been the main storyline, it could have been the strongest selling point.
There are two scenes that offer a great window of opportunity.
In Jak II when Jak walks out of the class 2 race after arguing with Keira. And when Jak later returned to the shop to congratulate Daxter. Keira gives him the cold shoulder and Jak looks away.
There is a descent amount of time completely unaccounted for. Where did Jak go off to in a huff?
In a flashback style, they could expand on Jak’s battle with Dark Eco from the original game.
While Daxter is preparing for the race, Keira and Jak could have gotten into another argument. She could have said something that set Jak over the edge enough to where he loses his temper inadvertently transforms momentarily.
Imagine how horrified Keira would have been after seeing her friend transform into a vicious monster. She could have been so scared of Jak to the point where Errol would need to step in and protect her. Proving Jak is a Dark Eco freak after all.
Jak could have been afraid of himself and try distancing himself from Keira so she can never see him in his monstrous state again.
There could have been a scene where Jak needs to save Keira from the metal heads and does everything to avoid transforming. Until he’s taken so much damage and transforms in order to save himself and the others.
After defeating the enemies, Jak would try to his his monstrous state from Keira. Until she gently approaches him and embraces Jak in his altered state, no longer afraid of his vicious appearance, causing him to change back.
Such a shame they never expanded on Dark Jak. It left me longing for more…

there was another advertisement that's also lost somewhere in the archives and i don't even remember if i daydreamed it or not but it had the red sage and the version of jak from jak II having a conversation although i don't remember what it was about.
jak 4 should probably be about the war between dark makers and precursors involving the time twins and the original 4 eco sages, green, blue, red, yellow. with the same graphics from the jak 3 advertisement. maybe it can also involve jak's mom? there's all kinds of material that can be used for the 4th sequel.

Unless it stays true to what makes J&D great, I don't want a Jak4. The Platforming, the artstyle, the world, the lore, the character depth, the humor, subtle romance, the action, the adventure, racing, puzzles, just so many things done so well in the Jak Trilogy. (Lost Frontier is NOT a TRUE J&D game. And despite how decent it was Jak X is also Not a True J&D game.)
Falx if Jak X is a good game .. then why discredit it? that's like saying Mario kart isn't a true Mario game, or better yet Crash Team Racing isn't a true Crash game.
Fuckoff Well it was decent, but it just didn't feel like a J&D game to me, they focused entirely on the racing which was good in small bits of the Trilogy. It was a pretty fun game, but as a J&D game which has a mixup of stuff from platforming to on rails shooting, adventure, puzzle solving, it just didn't hit all the Q's and E's so to speak. But that's just my experience with it. But that isn't to say I would dislike a Jak IX racing X-Treme or something like that, but as a Sequel to the Trilogy a Jak Game has to hit all the nails on the head the previous titles did in order to hold up.
Falx Jak X was a TRUE Jak game in everything but CORE-gameplay. Every other design aspect of Jak X was faithful. You worded your point poorly.

Hey VTNVIVI, I've been watching your videos for a long time, and seeing that you know a lot about the Jak & Daxter series and Naughty Dog, I'd like to ask you a question:
If a indie group contacts Naughty Dog because they are interested in making a new Jak & Daxter videogame, would they allow said indie group to use the Jak "license" (assuming it still belongs to Naughty Dog)? Or do you think they'd just say "No"?

Naughty dog won't make jak 4, why? Because if you take a ship, and over time replace every part of that ship, is it still the original ship? Same thing here, the original developers have all left, so these new people weren't apart of the cartoon style era, and as such have no interest in making those games. I just wish they would have sold the rights to another company

I’m fine with the cartoon style, I’d like to see Jak 4 that has more callbacks to not just 2 & 3 but also to Precursor Legacy. I’d also like to see a remake of Precursor Legacy that expands and has a few Easter eggs to later games.
I think it's less about graphics and style and more like they didn't want to push a sequel after they already had a happy ending. As many film makers know, once you've saved the world there's not much after that you can do.
TBH Jak and Daxter's style was just a result of the first game being a cartoony platformer. After the first game the visuals style could've been literally anything. Cartoon, anime, even frickin' sock puppets. Realistic or not the series would pretty much be the same. The plot, the mature humor, the action packed gameplay and everything we played the games for would all be the exact same.
They could always bring back Gol and Maia :)

REALLY getting tired of photorealistic games. I'm pretty fatigued from them at this point. not saying those games are bad but naughty dog focusing on more "realistic" gameplay, sucks imo. that's why my respect for ND has gone down alot since after "the last of us" and "uncharted 4" I liked the first 3 uncharted games. But I was not exited for uncharted 4 at all. I don't like walking simulators and generic shooting galleries full of long cutscenes. all ND games are overrated and "sammey" at this point. since last of us, ND have been obssessed with money and they don't care anymore.and it shows. I miss the old team. yes let them do what they like but I really don't like them as much as I did before. if they aren't gonna do anything with jack and daxter, then just give the rights to another company!!!!

I mean they webt out if the way to say last of us 2 wasn't happen but what do you know. I get your point man. I loved last of us. I think the uncharted seriess is fine. I don't get hype like the others though.

I'm getting tired of the photorealistic, interactive movie genre of games right now as well. I didn't mind the Uncharted games since the gameplay was competent even if it was pretty shallow. The Last of Us was mostly a walking simulator; still fun and challenging at times. But I personally think ND's problems lie in their narratives, where they try to copy the types of stories that others have done and try to inject political propaganda into the stories. If anyone thinks I'm wrong about the political part, then I would like to mention that Neil Druckmann himself confirmed that it's "impossible" for him to make a game without infecting the games he works on with whatever agenda is on his mind. Uncharted The Lost Legacy is more like The Lost Interest, and I think it's going to be really interesting to see the reception that game receives since it's so blatantly pro-feminism and a love letter to Anita Sarkeesian...

As Far as visuals, I actually liked the new Daxter BUT ONLY DAXTERS LOOK. It Reminded me of Rocket From Guardians Of The Galaxy. Jak 4 should be made and To continue the series, make graphics better but keep it cartoony (if that makes sense) The series has always been my favorite in my childhood and even today. I still enjoy playing these games. Naughty Dog, why is it such a big deal to y'all? Please... I'm begging for y'all to make Jak 4 and I will $200 for the game.

And they did absolutely right in not continuing with the Jak 4 project. If you to make something, do it right. They proved they actually care about their games. They are not like Activision or Ubisoft that have to make a game each year regardless of its quality. Our only hope right now are fan games like what is happening with Crash, Sonic...

I used to think that about Jak 4 as well. But after looking at the concept arts for it even further, I would have been interested to see where they would go in that style.
But would it have been necessary? They did that because they feared on how it would sell if it were cartoony again.

I don't think the marketing was out of the graphics but rather the new mature style. In an industry with the same graphics, art an sequels I would have preferred if they took a bold new direction. Naughty Dog's development philosophy is completely different now and they simply want to take new directions with their games. Just like how The Wind Waker alienated Zelda fans, I believe that Jak 4 would have as well. As using any franchise to sell copies is the same as pumping out sequels, I believe that Naughty Dog wants to make their games out of the most passion and least marketing as they can.
I don't see any passion in this what so ever! Most passion? Why change visuals and then think it's a disservice? Why not just go with the usual style? They tried using a popular name, got scared and scrapped it.
VTNVIVI it's just artwork, they didn't even start development so their first efforts went into the artwork, I personally enjoy the direction (that's just taste) but they didn't do it out of fear. They didn't lazily change the style for the sake of marketing, they clearly put a lot of thought into it because that's the type of art they wanted to make.
Taking risks is what gamers want. That’s why Cup Head sold so well.

One thing that killed me about J&D lost frontier is the voice actor it didn't feel like it was Jak and I hated it. If they would bring back the voice actor for Jak and returned to the original art style I would switch from Xbox one to PS4 just because that's my favorite series.

I absolutely love Jak and Daxter, it has been and always will be one of my favorite games of all time. If I could at some point work on Jak 4 it would be absolutely amazing. Hopefully I will be able to, since I am going to college for computer science and plan on being a game developer.

The story and gameplay was everything. At some of the darkest moments throughout the series the visuals weren't important. You still got that feeling that you were in the game.

It would be a dream come true if Jak and Daxter return and still kept it's cartoony visuals. However, I am afraid they will decide to return the game with photorealistic designs. (shrugs)

I agree with you 100%. Jak and Daxter should remain the way it’s always been. A cartoony and action packed game full of adventure and challenge. Good graphics DO NOT make a good game. Naughty Dog should’ve just grown a pair of balls and say, " We can’t make anymore Jak and Daxter games. We just don’t like the cartoony games anymore. Sorry. " Urgh! I’m still pissed off!

VTNVIVI Here is a Jak 4 story plot idea I've been thinking for a long time. So what if they continue off a couples years after Jak X (forget the other game which was made after Jak X, it sounds ridiculous and im not including that game in my idea) combat racing where everything been peaceful in both Haven City and Spargus City. In Jak 4, Haven City and Spargus have unified together and became two powerful cities both through sharing technology with one another, and forming alliances. This new alliance created a new expansion to Spargus City making it bigger and having more city missions, while Haven City has finally been fully restored after the Metal head and KG death bot war. Haven City now has its own large tower (almost as tall as the palace in Jak II) that is a relay communication tower to Spargus City and sites across the wasteland. Spargus City now is much more technologically advance and have minor safe zones (like small cities for transporting goods and services) in the wasteland where Jak and Daxter can travel to rest and explore. The wasteland has a much larger expansion to it where there will be Haven port ships across the wasteland shore lines where Jak can travel across the ocean across the wasteland to far out places. Also Jak and Daxter are now separate playable characters and both can free roam across the two cities and wasteland, Daxter while looking dazzling in his blue pants has some mini guns and gadgets (similar to the ones in the game Daxter) The conflict starts when Spargus Citys' military radar detects a ufo crashing into the ocean but dismiss as a metor, and continued on with daily routines. In the meantime couple of days later, Jak and Daxter continue on their daily fun activity like racing in Haven City's track and doing daily hunting missions like picking off some difficult metal head pest with Sid in the wasteland and borders around Haven City. When Odin senses a disturbance and ask Pecker to call Jak and Dax to meet up and communicate. Odin tells Jak she senses a dark disturbance that crashed somewhere on the planet and sends asks Jak to investigate. Jak than heads to the Spargus City and heads into the wasteland and goes to the shorelines near the ocean. He gets his Dive Suit on and starts exploring the ocean picking up on a strange signal and starts following it. What Jak found was a cloaked dark maker ship drilled to the ground and starts investigating. Fast forward Jak and his Team find out that the Dark Makers Leader has come to earth to finish off what they started in Jak 3. The dark makers had made small divisions all over the wasteland experimenting with biological weapons and testing them on metal heads, creating dark metal head slaves to help conquer Jak planet. Jak realizing the danger the world is in, he calls upon the precursors for assistance due to his inability to attack the dark maker with his current weapons. The precursors here the call and help Jak in the war for the planet and upgrade all of his weapons with precursor technology making each final weapon (the 4th slot in each Color based weapon) extremely powerful. Together Jak and his Team alongside the precursors must fight to protect the world from the real threat the Dark Maker leader who is after the weapon defence system inside Jaks world which can also be used to easily destroy or conquer worlds. In One part of the story line (regarding Jak's dark and light powers) Jak explorers both the precursors and Dark Makers ships and stations located on earth with special keys he finds across the dark maker stations and the ones the precursors give to him where he gets new dark and light abilities which will help when he has to face the Dark Maker Leader.

I enjoyed reading this :D Sounds like a pretty game to me! I always wondered if Gol and Maia actually survived. If they were to return, how would they go to the future? Did they actually end up in the future at a point when Spargus and Haven unified?
Making it realistic would not only reboot the series but provide a new sense of play style , having both light and dark powers with a realistic jak with combos you can mix like an actual brawler , that would be sick . 😷

I'm posting the same comment on this video from a previous one, but I don't care because this is important. For the Jak X: Combat Racing PS4 port ESRB rating on the ESRB website, it says it has online interactions while the other games don't have online interactions. This makes me think that due to the backlash of fans complaining of no online in Jak X, Sony backpedaled and made online in Jak X. A few months have passed after all.

Naughty God will not be doing that the majority of Naughty Dog wants to make serious cinematic adventures. So maybe Vicarious Visions, or perhaps Toys for Bob

While I would love a Jak 4, basically more than anything other (kind of) game coming out if they do it has to be done right and I'm not sure the people that can do it are there any more in the right places. Sure an amazing platformer bearing the name Jak 4 could be made but I worry if it would even fit in the story and lore.
PS this may sound stupid but since I first played Jak and Daxter The Precursor Legacy, followed by 2 and 3 I've had 2 giant burning questions in my head.
- One: Did those 2 miners ever mine that diamond the size of a house and if yes, what did they do with it?
- Two: Who the heck is that guy claiming to be Jack's uncle readying himself for a trip? I mean the closest possible relation he could legitimately be in Jak 1 is great-great-...-father.
I would love to see an more realistic and more serious reimagining of Jak and Daxter, yes please!
Just imagine exploring the precoursor ruins, the mad max like wasteland, the neon lights of Heaven City and the more serious tone of the lore this would bring!
People act like Sony themeselves will rip the existance of the originals out of our in real world universe and cast it into the void of oblivion if they even dared thinking about not doing a cartoonie styled version!

ND touches on this in the documentary on UC4; the team/artist are more grown up now. They're not in their 20's anymore, they want to tell stories that they can relate to based on life experience and maturity. More than likely, it'll take a team of younger artists to develop Jak 4 and probably from an indie studio.
The new generation of gamers is also spoiled from all the new graphics available so ND has to play to their new audience. Sure, a cartoony game from ND would sell great among fans of the original series but gamers born in the early 2000's probably wouldn't appreciate it as much. It's unfortunate, but that's the reality.
So basically, ND is saying let someone else handle it, so BE IT. They're basically saying they're too old for this haha smh... what logic.. nevermind. We have a bunch of grown up developers making cartoony games, it's just their excuse for not working on another Jak. In simple words, the team just changed and is not like before.
Jak 2 and 3 were much more mature from the first game. The Crash Remake made a lot of money as well.
Jak 2 & 3 were just so different than the first, blame GTA 3. Crash did indeed make a lot of money.
You are right vivi, they should be keeping the Original visuals of Jak and Daxter because the realistic one looks a bit odd i think to be honest.

What I hate about this is that Jak and Daxter has so much potential to become a series like God of War or Metal Gear in terms of story and universe. For example look at Jak X map from the menu when you select the tracks for the races. If Jak 4 is made they could use that map and expand it and put a lot more details and be able to visit Kras City and Icelands. And for story, they could make many things like trying to explore Mar's past and recreate his journeys so that you could find artefacts that are crucial for the world survival against a new threat or from the return of Goal and Maya that can control dark eco better than Jak that neither light eco can stop them. There is so much possibility for this series that ND can't see and this is a shame.

I think that the jak 4 "concept" for daxter was too much like rocket raccoon. I think another reason why they didn't want to finish jak 4 is because they didn't think it was even jak and daxter, but just two random characters who were trying to do a cosplay of them :/
They did say it didn't feel like Jak... BUT WHY go in that direction if you know it doesn't work and cause disservice?
It's sad but definitely if there's ever another Jack for game to come out it cannot be made by Naughty Dog since 90% of the original development team isn't even there anymore it's a completely different company now it's much like how Bungie is no longer the Bungie that made Halo

I would be absolutely fine with the cartoony style, I loved it. The story is what I was here for and I would actually love to see the end of Jak, like an Old Man Jak, that sounds like a good and final goodbye to fans and maybe start a new series with a new character.
