Gamesmaster Dave Perry Super Mario 64 Incident

  • The legendary moment in television history when the man who had the rep of being one of the best games players in the country (and was also a genuine sex symbol) failed miserably at Super Mario 64 and then sulked about it afterwards.
Diamond's "and on that BOMBSHELL!" makes me laugh every time.
    Interview with Casually Hardcore
CH: People still talk about the moment you lost on Games Master. At the time you said you was set up. What was going through your head at the time? Were the tears real or just some expert acting?
Dave Perry: Tears? There weren't any tears that I remember. But I was majorly pissed off what had gone on that day. We were told that if we took part in the quiz and got through to the final, then there would be a play off on a neutral game. Probably a new version of WipeOut from Psygnosis. However, when I turned up on the day, the game had been changed suspiciously to Mario 64 on the N64. I had recently spoken out in the trade press saying that I would not play Mario 64 until it was released officially in the UK, as the amount of press attention the new Nintendo console was getting was ruining the Christmas games market in the UK. So everyone new I had not played this game as it was not due out in the UK until the next year.
When I enquired if any of the finalists had played the game, it turned out that only one had... host Dominik Diamond's best friend. Not only had he played it, he had been playing it constantly for the past few months and completed it a number of times as he was helping develop Earthworm Jim 3D. Hardly a neutral game.
When I complained to the Director, I was told not to worry because he would not get through to the final, and if he did, then the game would be changed. I should have smelled a rat.
So, I played on, and won every round. However, when we got to the semi-final, if you watch the whole show you will notice that at least one question comes up about Earthworm Jim! The game Dominik's friend was helping develop! Coincidence?
So now he's in the final against me, on a machine I've never played on, on a game I've never played, but he's been playing on for the past few months.
When I went to see the Director about his promise that this wouldn't happen, he simply told me that there wasn't time to change anything as the crew had all run over on their scheduled time and the final had to take place immediately. He also told me that if I walked I wouldn't be allowed to use the company's hire car that had brought me to the shoot and would have to get home on my own. I was in the middle of an industrial estate in London on a Saturday evening. There weren't even any cabs. I was f*cked.
Feeling set-up and really hard done by I decided to try and play my way out of it, but predictably lost by a couple of seconds. I felt betrayed that the show I'd helped create, and had served so loyally could do this to me. I should have reacted better, but I just wanted out. At least it made good TV. I quit the show there and then and never went back.
CH: What did you think of Mario 64 once you got a chance to play the full version?
Dave Perry: I've never played it. I have always hated those cutesy Nintendo games.

The absolute end of the bell. I remember him writing about how he carried every type of joystick and peripheral with him at all times (presumably under his bandana, or on a Dave-Belt) in case he got challenged in the street to a game of Microcosm.

This is the show that led me to work out how the VCR record timer feature worked. Would re-watch episodes again and again, particularly anything next-gen related - seem to recall SNES DKC, Sonic 3 on Megadrive, Playstation Ridge Racer demos and Virtua Fighter on Saturn etc blowing my tiny mind. Of course back then, pre-internet, it was GamesMaster or VHS stuck to a magazine if you wanted to see anything in action. Wouldn't change my childhood though - Golden gaming generation.

    From Eurogamer:
The feud came to a head during the filming of the 1996 GamesMaster Christmas special. The co-commentators took part in a quiz that included a round of questions about fighting games.
Producer Jonny Ffinch says that Perry came to him the night before the shoot and asked for the answers. Perry explained he had a book about beat-'em-ups coming out and didn't want to look stupid. If Ffinch didn't oblige, Perry said he wouldn't show up for filming the following day. "So like a complete coward I went, 'Oh s***, alright, maybe I'll be able to sort something out,'" says Ffinch.
"Jonny had a huge fit of guilt and told me," says Diamond. "I said, 'You've got to write more questions, that's ridiculous.' I was furious."

Shows what you know. If you had done your research you would know that Dave Perry was assured by the director that the final challenge game would be a neutral game (in fact "a special level of WipeOut, made by the developers for the show"), so that neither of the finalists would have an advantage. Furthermore, bare in mind that Dominik Diamond purposefully read the "quick fire" questions for Perry extra slow, whilst asking Kirk questions relating to Earthworm Jim (a franchise which he was personally working on). Oh, and Dominik and Kirk were best mates at the time. The entire thing was rigged to make Perry look like a tit.
It's completely unjust that Dave Perry gets abuse for rightfully standing up against being gaslighted.

Well from the Eurogamer report that was posted today everyone apart from Dave Perry says that he was not cheated out of this match. • @MsHojat
      @MsHojat Před rokem +1

I would say that he was cheated out of it, _however_ that "cheat" might have been _justified_ due to the fact that he supposedly cheated himself for the quiz. I don't know if the show was aware of that and hence changed the game for that reason, or not though. Overall they both did things wrong, but one could have been justified if they did it in response to the first cheat.

The host tried to play it off as "You're famous, you could have gotten to play it if you really tried" which is a terrible argument because that would kind of be abuse of power, but what's more is it's not like he had any chance to prepare. Someone tweet Jezze ChatGPT's answer "The phrase "And on that bombshell" became famously associated with Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear in the UK. Clarkson used it frequently at the end of episodes to transition to the credits, often after a particularly humorous or shocking moment.
However, Dominic Diamond used a similar phrase on Gamesmaster before Clarkson's use on Top Gear. Diamond would often conclude episodes of Gamesmaster by saying, "On that bombshell," which indicates that he used it first.

I think he wasn't playing normally specifically because the opponent went first and fell off. He probably knew that he'd be unlikely to well first try on a blind playthrough especially when the person who has got to play/practice the game couldn't even complete it.
I'd guess he was trying to stall the timer. Which is itself risky too though since he didn't know how to do it, nor how unsafe/difficult it is.

    • @Halokon
      @Halokon Před rokem

@@MsHojat this was a blast from the past! Absolutely, stripped of all the context, I do think it’s unfair, and in that situation, where you’re not sure how you’re going to do (and it’s one of the first 3D platformers to have an analog control stick layout and on one of the trickiest levels in said game), there was nothing wrong with Dave’s tactic, and he can hardly be blamed for the execution either. But Kirk was also pretty shite, so it’s not like Dave was up against a legend here.
The real issue is Dave’s boasting, followed by a poor performance (which, again, I think is understandable) followed by the being a bit of a toss pot in response to losing. If he’d said something like “I went in, tried my best at a game I’ve not played before and I was frankly shite! Well done Kirk!”, he could have come away looking at least a little more chill and not like a child with a god complex.
But I do agree with your assessment of the tactics he was trying, as well as it being arguably quite unfair in principle.

Had a passing interest in this show as a teenager. Dom seemed to go through a bit of a transition towards the last couple of series.
"Pre-bald" Dom acted seamlessly as the anchor and the show was about the games.
"Bald Dom" made the show about him. With no hair, he knew his chances of being a 1990's popstar were over. He took his frustration out on the little fella instead.....the one with blue, red and white hair.

That is true, because Series 4 was the last GOOD series of GamesMaster.

@@RoyStantz Why would you say that, Dave? Is it because you didn't get to be on telly anymore?

I loved those show as a kid. I still game today in my 40s and I always will. It wasn't the same show when Decter Fletcher came in. Dominic Diamond was the best host.

Just reminds me of the absolute magic of playing Super Mario 64. Incomparable.

If he had newer played the game, how did he know about the shortcut? Why didn't he just play it safe?
