She’s the inspiration for Spider-Man
speaking of the music, does anyone know which track this is? I've looked through the soundtrack but couldn't find which one it is
That third "superpower" is low key the most amazing thing ever. The fact that an animal the size of a fingernail is capable of problem solving on such a level is just mind blowing to me!
They learn from their encounters and adjust their hunting strategies based on their experience. They study their prey's behavior and formulate plans of attack.
That makes them quite some of the most intelligent animals on Earth! They have better problem solving skills than human toddlers.
Later on in this episode or on another, I forget, Attenborough notes that other than big game cats these are the most impressive hunters he's ever come across. You can imagine how many hunters he's come across.
They are doing all this (and a lot more besides, not covered here) with half a million neurons. We have about a hundred billion. Truly an amazing little critter.
an even more interesting tidbit is that the queensland population of portia fimbriata aren't just spider eating spiders, but _specifically_ hunt jumping spiders. you know, the smartest clade of spiders. those ones are even smarter than the ones that hunt web builders.
they can imitate the specific vibrations made by a male of another jumping spider species to lure out the female of its nest to eat it, and even hunt jumping spiders that they can't see, by jumping until their well-camouflaged prey gives itself away by turning to look.
They might be even smarter than we think! Scientists recently discovered that (at least in some less intelligent species) jumpers experience REM sleep! The jumper's main set of peepers are moveable (just like ours), so scientists observed transparent spiderlings to see if they could detect eye movement inside their heads. Sure enough when the spiders went to sleep their eyes could be seen twitching! They also noted that other parts of the spider's body would twitch as well. This would suggest they might experience visual dreams just like we do. We don't know for sure yet though, not until we do the worlds smallest brain scan to confirm they dream lol
These little guys are truly nature's best work.

I think I'd really love this story adapted into an animated series, or some kind of show or movie, because I really want more people to experience it. I've always been irrationally afraid of spiders. A few weeks after finishing _Children of Time_, I was startled by a jumping spider on a nearby wall while taking out the trash. Portia Fimbriata was always one of those animals that utterly astonished me. As a spider fanatic when I was younger, the prospect of a cannibalistic spider- not uncommon- that relied on intelligence almost unseen in any other animal. As Atenborough put it brilliantly, 'Portia is a genius'. Along with the Net- casting (Ogre face) spider, her eyesight is unparalleled. With similar techniques to the assassin spider, the fact that she could actively plan out a method of attack, learning from mistakes and spending hours mapping out the intricate web patterns of the Argioppe's unique web. Another common prey of the Portia Fimbriata is Spitting spiders. If she were to get in the way of the chelicerae, she'd be pinned down and killed. So she waits for mating season to attack. Spitting spiders hold their eggs in their chelicerae, meaning that they cant extcrete the sticky glue substance at a prey on the move, so the Portia will leap onto the back of the enemy and paralyse her. She'll then dispose of the eggs and eat the spider. Fascinating. Generally seen was the most intelligent arthropod in the world, and one of the most intelligent animals, up there with dolphins, chimpanzees and crows.
no disrespect to this amazing spider but there is simply no way it's in the same league as dolphins, chimps, or crows in terms of general intelligence
If you really enjoy spiders of the Portia genus I can thoroughly reccomend the book 'Children of Time'.
It's a story that follows the evolution of a hyperintelligent species of Portia Labiata written by Adrian Tchaikovsky who studied zoology.
@@delta-9969 In some way it is. It cheats with multi-role brain cells. It's not many animals that can solve 3D puzzles by just watching and plot a plan like the spider in this clip. Plenty of pretty large animals will forget you if they don't see you, but this little spider remembers both where the prey are and it's plan of attack. It can also learn from failure and form new plans instead. That puts it pretty high up on the scale of intelligence.
@Delta-9 let's not make it a brain measuring contest, the fact we live alongside this variety of intelligent animals is worth appreciating regardless of how they compare.

Sir David Attenborough and the BBC team are the best at what they do and THANK YOU. I agree with the comment that the whole team deserve Oscars.

This was so intense, I literally held my breath as she dropped onto the spider
Better than any Hollywood shit.

I don’t get why people are afraid of jumping spiders and carpenter bees. At least the jumping spiders are helpful.
@@foolspeedahead because they look like monsters
Jumping spiders are so freaken cute!!!😍
Just caught one and learned so much about it. They can see a full color range like humans, they can see further than us too like they can see as far as andromeda, have 3d visual sense, and apparently dream too. Impressive considering its size. Nature's smallest and smartest computer. I'd feel real guilty stepping on one.
