Thank you very much! Unfortunately the video was more of an afterthought for us as opposed to the main reason we do the event. I appreciate your feedback and will hopefully produce a more substantial cut if the video for next years event… or perhaps we’ll release and extended cut for this year with all of that once the dust settles after the holiday shopping season.

@@GamersGettingPlayed You can read about why ProjectorCentral decided to exclude AWOL based on the legal threats made by AWOL who demanded that they be excluded from this event, on ProjectorCentral's writeup of the event on their website.
While I can't speak to the motivations of every youtuber out there, they are often compensated by brands to make positive reviews and they are sent cherry picked units that perform better than what a customer would get off of the shelf.
The LaserTV Showdown did not allow for any manufacturer supplied units and was judged by an independent panel of experts, using professionally calibrated projectors so you get an opinion of many vs just one, and the opinion of many came with no outside influence of compensation, free items, affiliate commissions or otherwise.

I noticed from some review videos for the Wemax Nova SE 4k UST is basically the Formovie Theatre…… In those review videos the instruction manual for the Wemax is labeled “Formovie”…….
I believe the only major differences is the ANSI Lumens, ALPD 4.0, Android TV 11.0, and the 107%BT2020……
The Wemax having a slightly lower Grade in these categories. How significant are these changes?
I think a comparison between these would be really fun considering the price difference!!

    • @zhsergey2

So the only major difference are the brightness, wide color gamut (Formovie with triple laser and Wemax as a single), actual color management system with Android vs lack of calibration controls on the Wemax and amazing contrast by virtue of alpd 4.0?
It sure doesn’t sound like they are basically the same unit at all 😂

He does make a great video and we like and respect his work, but I would beg to differ in regards to which test is better.
      1) we use only retail projectors off the shelf and not manufacturer provided golden samples
      2) we calibrate our units in 3 different modes
      3) we have a panel of 6 expert judges instead of just 1 persons opinions
      4) we have the judges look at all units at the same time, which leaves nothing to memory and allows for easy comparison of any unit to any/all others.
While we do feel that our Showdown is the most expansive and encompassing event of its type, it may not be all reflected in our roundup video here.
The Hookup did a great job with his; we however have different philosophies, methodologies and criteria. Two different but valid comparisons that are both helpful to potential UST buyers.

Unfortunately ProjectorCentral ended up pulling it from the Showdown. Below is a quote from ProjectorCentral on why:
“We actually did have a unit on hand but became concerned quickly that its Calman Auto-Cal'd image, which was spot-on on paper, wasn't truly giving this model a fair representation of its best performance. Keep in mind that the HU915 is now a pretty well-known entity that came in second overall in the 2022 competition and has reviewed quite favorably with ProjectorCentral and elsewhere. The only responsible and fair thing to do was drop it from the competition. We're considering the possibility of doing a little mini-Showdown in the coming months taking the top performers from this latest round and putting it against the HU915 and maybe a couple of others that didn't make it into the event.”

We have actually tested 3 different Nexigo models; the original sample they sent us (which we lent to the Hookup), the one we borrowed from the Hookup (that he used as the primary item in his video), as well as the retail unit we purchased to include in the Showdown. There were differences between them all.

We've attempted to do it blind, but logistically it is a challenge. The Judges get far to close to the screens wheras they can see the top of the projector, plus many of them (as they are professional reviewers) recognize menu options and interface to know the make of the projector as settings are being changed.
It is something that we have brought up again to ProjectorCentral and your feedback is appreciated.

ProjectorCentral addresses their decision for not including AWOL in this year’s Showdown in their writeup of the event on their website.
To summarize it here: AWOL's flagship projector came in 5th out of 6th place last year in the triple laser round of the 2022 Showdown.
They apparently did not score as highly as they would have liked and had subsequently embarked on a year+ long campaign to discredit the event, its organizers and judges and challenge the integrity of Rob Sabin, editor-in-chief @ ProjectorCentral.
Prior to this year’s event they sent Rob a threatening email and had threatened to sue the organizers if AWOL was included.
It’s quite a shame that a company would behave in such a manner and be so afraid to be judged by an independent group of experts, conducted by the most authoritative entity in the projector review world, ProjectorCentral.

The LaserTV Showdown was performed in a room (as you can see in this video as well as last year's) that had both lights on and lights off judging; it is certainly not a "cave".
We were AWOL's ONLY reseller at the time of last year's Showdown as well as the majority of the other products in the showdown, however there are items that ProejctorCentral choses to include that we do not carry, such as the Leica Cine 1 in this year's contest.
If you are unhappy that there are several different people putting on shootouts and run them differently, I guess it would make sense to pay attention to the one that is run by ProjectorCentral - the most authoritative entity in the projector review space and whos event has the projectors calibrated in several modes and judged by an independent panel of 6 experts.
Other shootouts do not calibrate the units, are only judged by 1 person or if it with a group, don't even publish the names of the judges.
Other shootouts use manufacturer supplied unit which we all know are cherry picked to be top performers or may contain special hardware or firmware to provide performance superior to what is available to consumers.
The 2023 LaserTV Showdown used retail units, off of the shelf to ensure what is judged is what a consumer could purchase themselves.

An image of sbs 3D is shown during the formovie win, but zero mention of 3D. So how was the 3D compared to others youve tested.
Heres an innovative idea...how about a shootout of projectors that are 3D capable? No one has ever done that (if 3D is even mentioned in reviews, its aling the libes of " yes, it has 3D and it works."
With few to no showrooms for a consumer to see anything personally, a 3D showdown would be a MAJOR help to those of us who are looking for such a unit. We get comparisons of every other feature...except for one of the biggest features many of us look for.

@@tdrabik77 Not as rare as one might think. Many 3D titles on Amazon are higher on their sales list than the 4k. And Avatar 3d sold well. Even the lower run of Robot Monster 3D had to have additional replications. Every person I know that has ever watched a 3d movie on my set would promptly buy one if they could. When i say they cant, not made any more...the response is wtf not!
I guarantee that if any mfgr put out just one consumer 3D/4k set, they wouldn't be able to keep up with the demand. LG could just reissue their original OLED model, with no updates and it would sell...including those looking to replace old sets, those who can buy more than one as a backup, those who'd buy to resell at higher prices once their gone, etc.
One reason AWOL is doing so well is that they dont hide the fact that they are 3D capable, as others do. As an AWOL rep stated somewhere, they included 3D because thats what the customers wanted. Business matters aside, good for them.
Of course, it is a niche. But so is Atmos. And UHD for that matter. Just saying its a larger niche than some believe.

IMHO the formovie getting first place twice in a year is a little concerning. The setup on it is not consumer friendly. It consistently needs focus adjustments. I believe out of the box experience on it is not aces. Not everyone is going to spend hours or days setting it up "just right". There needs to be a consumer confidence score on all these projectors. Ease of setup and out of the box watchibility. Thats where the LG 915 should have been brought in. a True plug and play unit.

On top of that, companies try to dupe you with fancy terms like "4K Enhancement", "E-Shift", "XPR". Just be honest and not tell customers it has "4K resolution" when it's fake 4K.
It's like when realtors and apartment advertisers try to make you think you're getting a really cool kitchen even though it's incredibly small when they say things like "This apartment boasts GALLEY kitchen complete with parquet flooring".

That being said, he did not calibrate the units nor did he look at all of them at the same time; he did them one vs one.
He also used mostly manufacturer provided units, which may be superior to those that are found at retail, like the ones we used for our showdown.
He makes great videos and we all respect the job that he does with his reviews.
