Looks like a great UST projector. Having Dolby Vision will set a precedent for all projectors moving forward!
Yes it's great having DV!
Looks great. For a light controlled room, this has to be a serious contender for a true cinematic experience.
Great job mate
Thanks mate - this projector really surprised me and is the real deal with Dolby Vision support - which is unheard of from a projector (unless it's a Christie Eclipse haha!)
Great review buddy. Short throws keep getting better and better. Side note, the beard is looking as epic as ever.
Haha thanks :)
Great review Tony. I hope that you and your family are doing well! Greetings from Austria 🇦🇹 ❤❤
Thank you! You too!
I saw this somewhere else and was thinking about it. Thank you for the thorough review.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the great review! I actually picked one of these up late last year and have been building my room since. I've had it up and running a few times but have yet to have it fully connected to all my speakers. From what I've seen it's looked incredible. I've had a little envy seeing all of the standard throw projectors on your channel but a UST was just the best option for me due to my room. I knew from my own eyes that it was a great viewing experience but I'm still glad to hear your thoughts. Thanks again!
Definitely - I love UST projectors and have a dedicated UST room - which I did the review in - where I've had many brands showcased. This one is as close to a standard throw projector performance as Ive seen to date.
Has it 3D?
@@RicardoGarcia-xz1rz It hasn't
As usual and awesome video, but I've got to say the B-roll on this was epic. Production is getting better and better. Great job!
Wow thank you! I really appreciate that!
@@BuildMontage you're welcome mate. I've been very slowly building a home theatre setup and inspired from you I've gone down the Krix rabbit hole.
Managed to snag a pair of used Harmonix for $1800 (AUD) and now the damage is done - I'm in love!
@@straightspine9870 great set of speakers! Enjoy them!
Got one a week ago along with Aeon 123” CLR3. Totally bad ass at night, but definitely not as bright in daytime as most vids ive seen are claiming. Id call the built in speakers as “usable for a few days until your actual sound system arrives.” They are loud, but very tinny… annoying in fact if you turn then up.
We work all day anyways, so this wont really get used before dark so it’s fine. Besides, no matter how you slice it, it’s pretty rad having a 9ft wide screen 😂
No projector works well during the day. It's impossible to get black on a white screen when ambient light is hitting it - and I always recommend external speakers - im pretty sure I did in this video but I cant remember I pretty much say it in every single UST review I do.
Great review cheers 🍻
Thank you kindly
incredible Tony
Great review and has me wondering about changing my current projector. Just wondering how the black levels hold up with this model. It looked impressive with what was captured but how is it in person and compared to other brands.. Thanks
The black levels on this are great. The video doesn't do it full justice compared to what you see in person.
I have wemax a300 UST projector.
I think it's a great quality picture projector. Not many reviews but it looks nice and sharp picture
Hi Tony, great review and video as usual. Apologies if I've missed it in a video but how would you go about calibrating a home theater projector?
I see you used the Colourchicker Display Plus.... would that plus contrast patterns be enough?
I didn't show the calibration process - it isn't a very entertaining watch so I cut it out (I have left it in before and seen thats when people click away from the video) - so I use HCFR to calibrate and for the purposes of the video, doing the gamma, colour temp and prim/sec colours is usually enough to extract a really great image - and the Formovie does it insanely well.
@@BuildMontage thanks Tony for the info. Really useful to know how someone with your vast knowledge would go about bringing the best out of a projector. Really appreciate it
What do u feel of lesser brands I mean not the samsungs lgs and epson etc?
Pleased to hear this review Tony. Wasn’t really keen on USTPs but felt I would need one given that my home theatre room at the end of the year will be … influenced … by the steam punk aesthetic and my wife has the most beautiful ceiling fan she wanted me to have in there!!! As you say, placement with (centre) speaker because I didn’t have a cabinet set up in mind. I do like the copper tones of my Klipsch. Perhaps I can blame her for the need for in wall speakers and the acoustic transparent screen eh? Wish me luck!
GOOD LUCK!!
Can you expand some more on the Display Mode. Can this do a CIH zoom / lens memory like say the Epson 9400
The display modes are just changing the aspect ratio so no it can't do switching or has any CIH zoom/lens memory. A UST has a complex lens system to allow it to throw a rectangular image from that angle.
Hey, i know each projector is different but i'm just having a nightmare for months sicne i got mine, getting accurate colors and calibration with my x-rite.
Do you think youc ould share your calirbated settings for sdr and hdr? I would see how you've adjusted them, I cannot for the life of me, get cyan to look natural.... greatly appreciated! Good video thank you!
That’s a shame. Unfortunately the unit has been returned so I don’t have the settings any longer.
Great review as always. Do you know how this stacks up against the Epson ls800 ?
The Epson LS800 is one projector I'm yet to review. Hopefully I get one in soon.
Thanks for the interesting review. One question: What screen size are you using? 120inch?
Im using a 100" screen.
Hey Tony, whats the best 4K triple laser you ever tested?
The best one I've ever seen is the Christie Eclipse - it's not a UST though and retails over $500K... for triple laser, I'd say for my preference of having high dynamic range, then I'd say the formovie. If brightness if your thing over contrast, the Casiris A6.

Great review! I was wondering in your opinion/setup how the movie image quality of the Formovie compares to the JMGO N1Ultra? I know they are different types of projectors I’m just trying to get a practical idea of how the image stacks up
They have a similar feeling about them. The n1 ultra has better focus and brightness uniformity high is expected from a standard throw projector. The Formovie does have Dolby vision support which is awesome, and brightness wise both are similar. I think for ambient lit rooms the Formovie is better but dedicated rooms maybe the N1 ultra.
Thanks so much for answering this! It’s sometimes tough to imagine that the N1 can perform so well at such a low price point.
@@sorsiva only when you realise that a UST has a lot of hurdles to overcome, especially with the optics and the angle of display and getting that right, focus uniformity etc... So the N1 has an easier time being able to focus and shoot straight. I think Formovie is definitely the best UST on the market right now THAT IVE TESTED! - I still need to look at the AWOL and a couple of other new units too.
@@BuildMontage would love to hear your thoughts on the Hisense PX1 if you get your hands on one. The price has become really attractive on those.
Hi great detail review can you use it with a transparent cinema scope screen
Thank you. Yes you could for sure, however it would be like any other projector where you would have overscan. It does have aspect ratio options so you can crop if necessary I believe - I didn't test as I have a standard 16:9 screen. Great projector though - would love to own one.
Is there enough room between UST and screen to put an in wall center channel under the screen?
I placed my speaker under the projector - it's not ideal but the Graphix has great dispersion so from 4.5m away it doesn't sound like it's coming from under. You could go a shallow on-wall or a speaker behind the screen as well - or cut the call and place a loudspeaker in the cavity. Just have to think outside the box - a UST has a lot of positives as well.
Does it support 3D?
Great review man. I have a question. What is the farthest distance vertically, can the projector and screen be from each other?
It depends on what size screen you’re trying to achieve and whether you w ish to keystone or not
@@BuildMontage Thanks for replying, but I recently found out I can't use a ust projector with my Screen Innovations slat screen. Guess I'll be getting the epson ls11000 or 1200.
Hi, have you encountered problems regarding fan error? Mine says "Fan error. Projector will automatically turn off on 5 seconds so as to protect itself". Any idea how to rectify?
No Im sorry no - it was a test unit sent back to the distributor after I did my video.
Where can I go to calibrate my formovie like you have done. I'm loving the picture.
Or do you have the calibration settings?
Basically I use a calibration sensor and HCFR software to get the colours and colour temperature correct for my screen and room.
Sharing my settings won’t help you as it’s dependant on the environment. Also it’s boxed back up waiting to be collected to go back to the supplier :)
Hi, i had encountered a fan error and the projector is auto shut down ...any idea ? Thanks
Have you contacted Formovie? I wouldn't have a clue I'm sorry.
hello, can you do a formovie theater vs hisense PX1-PRO ?
I generally don't do VS videos as there are way too many projectors and they all have strengths and weakenesses so I try to focus each video on the projector in review so you can get the most info about it.
My Formovie is comming next week.
Would you mind sharing the calibration settings for us?
Greeetz from the Netherlands
Unfortunately the unit was returned back after the video was done so I cant share my settings with you :(
@@BuildMontage ☹☹☹
Would you say is´t really necessary to calibrate the Projector? That would cost me around 150 Euro´s over here.
Hi can you please share the calibration settings? It's similar to yours.
The cal settings are relevant to my screen and room and the actual projector - I don't think they will help you very much as calibration relies on various elements specific to your own setup.
Thanks so much. May I ask one more thing. I can't just start the projector occasionally and there are 4 lights on constantly. Any idea?
Holy cow...you calibrate for review units? You're a crazy man!!
Yes I do! It's important if I'm going to do a review to test the performance after calibrated for my room/screen.
@@BuildMontage that's why you're the true MVP on HT reviews
The formovie vs benq4550i in dark room for movies mostly SDR who wins?
Formovie
If u have to choose between
formovie and benq ht4550i
In dark room for movies
What would you choose?
If I wanted to keep my center speaker I'd pick the BENQ, but if I was happy for Dolby Vision, I'd pick Formovie!
So i can't go wrong with either,
In term of picture quality?
Overall am watching SDR tv shows and HDR movies in dark room
Half the time my content in 1080p which one will give me better upscaling and aharp image?
Great review but the HDMI 2.1 will not do 4k120p. 60hz max.
Yes it’s a 60hz projector I think I just slipped because I’m so used to saying it.
thank you so much for getting back to me - made the purchase, ✅
Will you be doing other projector reviews?
Sure, UST projectors are something I do regularly on my channel. This one so far has been the best one I've tested.
@@BuildMontage I am thinking more long throw projectors. I would like to see a review on the new Sony 5000es and Epson LS12000.
@@percybedford6266 I did review the 12000b but didnt have enough time with it to give it a proper review. If you're looking in that range, hands down the JVC NP5 - which is the projector I'm personally about to buy :)
How do you compare this to the Casiris A6?
The Formovie Theatre won best UST projector in 2022. Beating out all the big guys and boutique manufacturers including much more expensive models.
I understand, but the Casiris was not even part of the lineup to be judged. And as he just reviewed the Casiris, I would want to know his opinion as he had very positive feedback on it.
The Casiris A6 is my daily driver - it's a bright projector so if you like a bright image, the A6 is great, however, if you prefer dynamic range, nice contrast and excellent tone mapping - the Formovie is the way to go imho.
Thanks for the reply! Even with the Formovie having 600 ANSI lumens more, the Casiris is still a better daytime option? I guess what I'm trying to get as is, my current set up will be very basic, no ALR screen as we do not know if it will be a permanent spot for the UST projector. Would the Casiris be a better option on a white wall or the Formovie?
Is this different to the 2022 model or is this that model?
I believe it's the same model. I was late to review due to geographic location and stock availability. Really glad I got my hands on one though as its an insanely good projector.
What's the motion clarity like compared to OLED TV's?
You can't compare this to an OLED. It's not a fair comparison. Motion is however, quite nice and feels very cinematic vs an OLED. It will come down to a number of factors I guess as to what you're looking for to buy something like a UST.
@@BuildMontage Gaming in my case. Do these triple laser projectors use LCD screens? One for each RGB? Or mirrors? If mirrors that means direct RGB laser through lens to wall which would potentially mean the only limiting factor for motion is the mirror articulation speeds.
@@kekethetoad too much latency for gaming in my view. Casual gaming is ok but no where near what an Oled will do for pro gaming.

This rig good for running a golf simulator?
I can't see why not!
Which is the best 4k laser short throw projector for 200inch screen available in market now....
I don't know of any USTs that can do 200" - there would be a LOT of focus uniformity issues once you get past 120" on most projectors.
I am not saying about ultra short throw. Just normal short throw..
Why looks the contrast mostly washed out. Only on the end it looks fine. Looks it really so terrible or was it just not perfect recorded/color correction ?
Not sure I understand what you mean? It only looks perfect in blacked out conditions. I showed it in all lighting conditions. I don't color correct or edit the video to make it look better outside of the v-log to rec709 conversion. In daylight or any ambient light the image does suffer.
@@BuildMontage if I see videos of it on other clips it looks not so much contrastless in low ambilight. Looks it really like on your video or like on others that’s the question in my mind xd ;) wished i could make screenshots but let me check the timeline to show
@@BuildMontage 1:09 looks really like a grey instead of black. Lack of Contrast.
1:28 Black Bars are really going to grey if the image has more light. So blocking light for black seems not so good (i had seen a test there was black level 0,02cd ... should be darker then)
2:30 Looks like its dark in the Room but the CLR Screen still looks more grey then black. Lack of Contrast.
4:00 same here. Looks like room is dark but lack of contrast. Highlights in the Movie looks not really bright. Black looks like grey.
The Whole Image looks like it is recored with a FLAT Profile.
8:45 Looks much butter.
9:30 Looks more like i see it on other Reviews, but still a bit Flat.

@@BuildMontage nice!
Max screen size??
It was in the video but it’s 150”
If only they made a shorter throw version of it. I can't quite fit it in my space at 120 inches without the image ending up on the ceiling and for 100 inches I might as well just purchase a TV
That’s fair
@@BuildMontage Best hope for USTs might be Hisense. Their new models have better throw ratios and get Dolby Vision.
Thanks for the review. I'm interested in this projector for my new HT room. Like almost all reviews, you didn't address the issues of center speaker and placement - how far from the wall and the distance from the bottom of the screen to the bottom of the projector. My room allows 110"-120" screen size, but the ceiling height is 228CM. If I subtract 150cm screen height, and 40cm from the bottom of the screen to the bottom of the projector and allow 20 cm of space from the top of the screen to the ceiling, the projector will sit almost on the floor, so I will need to build a special cabinet for it . I also found no way to integrate my Klipsch RP-450C center speaker, as it will block the projection path.
I don't talk about the constraints of a UST during a UST review because it's not relevant to the actual product. Placement needs to be worked out on an individual basis by the potential purchaser. I have made several videos about UST projectors as a concept and the constraints. Here is one where I go into more detail about it... czcams.com/video/T-Q2Kz_-3lo/video.html
@@BuildMontage Thank you for your answer and for the link. The Formovie is more restrictive in placement compared to other UST projectors like the epson LS800 for example. For 120" screen it needs to be placed 33cm from the wall compared to just 17.3cm for the epson, and 27cm from the bottom of the screen to the top of the projector, vs just 19 cm for the epson. With the epson I can place the unit on a cabinet with the center speaker under the projector, whereas it will not be possible with the Formovie. I planed to install Formovie in my new HT room, but after considering all the limitation, I will probably buy a TCL 98" QLED TV instead. The TCL is selling here in Europe for 3500 Euro, the same price as the Formovie, but I will save 1000-1500 Euro on a ALR screen and I will have no problems with the center channel.
No 3D?
My thoughts are, when Avatar 2 hits home theatre, it will reignite the 3D market. There is glassesless 3D tech coming. It is only for gaming atm, but it will eventually hit the home cinema market. No 3D, no sale.
No 3D correct.
The question is is it's just displaying the Dolby vision badge and not actually displaying Dolby vision because hight end that coat 50k dont have DV yet ol
No it’s 100% Dolby Vision. Easily proveable as I was able to set the Apple TV to Dolby Vision. It only allows that if ur detects the display is capable of it.
No 3d??? How does it compare to the Vava???
No 3d. As I said this is probably the best one I've tested so far.
The AWOL LTV 3500 and 2500 have 3D and may soon get Dolby Vision with a firmware upgrade. An firmware upgrade coming this week will at least give it enhanced black levels.
@@EnriqueReyes I havent got the AWOL in for review yet but it may be coming.
Are you okay? You just came across so sad. Like you recently lost a loved one, and you made this video because you had to. Reading the script while trying to suppress emotions. I say this out of genuine concern, as your videos have always been very lively. You would always come across happy and excited about what you were talking about. This just felt off from your usual stuff.
I really appreciate you reaching out. I put a lot of work into this video both from the research, filming and editing. I am ok, thank you for asking, there are some things going on in my personal life, I just didn't realise it had seeped into my video...
Wow, did that picture fade dramatically once a drop of light was let into the into the room. Not worth it.
It’s my room not the projector. It’s probably the best result from any projector I’ve tested. The window is side on to the screen and crushes any light coming in. The worlds brightest projector wouldn’t be able to hold up against my window of death!
