Great video, My dad comes from North Kerry, I think he has a biscuit box of original lane minnows some still in their packages unused originals made in Abbeyfeale Co Limerick in his shed. I must see if they're still there. He used to collect different colors and sizes. He swore by them. He used to fish the Feale on the Brosna/ Mountcollins stretch for white trout/sea trout and salmon
That’s brilliant you should definitely have a look for them, there’s not too many left in Ireland, some lads go absolutely bananas for them ☺️🎣

Hi Senan, ever try the old salmon Gordon Griffiths/reubon Heaton Devons on the lake for trout or pike? Or flying Cs?
Caught loads of trout, salmon and pike on both, on boyne and liffey. Interesting if would work equally well trolling on the lake.
No doubt they would work Derek 👌 they’re all basically the same style of lures, I’ve mainly been using small jerkbaits and wobblers this year, I’ve came away from the spinning style of trout lures ☺️

I tell you the story. 3 years ago we were on Predator battle competition on lough Derg. We were trolling for trout for one an a half days! Only on the last day of the competition 30 minutes before the end of time, I got one bite and the fish missed the hook... And for you, it looks so easy to catch a trout 😂
Heya buddy 😎 ah yes getting the trout in the predator battle is no easy task! Everyone struggles with this. I’ve fished lough Derg since I was 6 years old, so over 22 year’s experience with this water fishing it nearly 4-5 days a week, I know lots of ways to catch the trout here, but sometimes they don’t want to cooperate, even I struggle at times for a bite ESPECIALLY when you really need one. 😁👍 trout can drive men crazy but that’s what makes them fun!

Hi, I’ve had hundreds of pike on the 12lb trout leader, landed loads over 100cm, maybe one bite off this year due to a pike engulfing the lure but with the tiny hooks the pike will shake it within a day or two , if I’m using small rapalas that have a higher chance of pike I use a light 7kg wire trace that works fine, but when using lane minnows I always use the 12lb fleuro, they fish better the movement is less restricted. 🎣 if I’m going fishing for pike with my proper pike gear I always use 111lb fleurocarbon, but for the trout it’s always lighter stuff, no problems 👌

The fishing seems to be great in Lough derg
The trout fishing is fairly average in comparison to Corrib and the other big lakes. The pike fishing is good tho. Can be good on days if you know where to look. Lovely lake tho I wouldn’t swap it for the world 👌🎣
Is the fly fishing any good for browns in that lake or is the method your using more preferred? Nice catch

Definitely small spoons work great in zigzag patterns and revs on the engine, the trout love them erratic movements, they smash it 👌
what swivels do you use with the lane minnows and where do you get them, thanks.
They are called original bb swivels, unfortunately I don’t think they are made anymore by the original maker

@@senanstanleyfishing no worries I’ll check it out tassie devils catch a lot of trout in Australia especially the famous pink one they have also released what they call live skin colours that look like the fishes prey probably catch more fishermen 😂😂😂
I’ve done very good with black and red tassies and also back and gold ☺️👌 I don’t think the colour matters too much, once the fish are feeding

They don’t sell the original lane minnows anymore frank, but some of the smaller tackle shops around Ireland will have the replicas in stock. They can be hard to find, they are very sought after
3-4 mph ? way faster than I expected!
Sometimes even faster than 4mph, trout are crazy fast 👌

Hi Raymond. The lane minnows I use are all the old style I inherited off my grandparents they don’t sell them anymore. Most tackle shops in IRELAND sell the new reproduction versions if you Google lane minnow. I use all sizes. The smaller the better generally.

I use the 7kg wire trace with the rapalas , I also use 12lb fleurocarbon on other days that has landed huge pike. Up to yourself bud, the light wire trace from savage gear is the right job I only found that lately I think it’s 7kg and very fine with a small clip

Have you ever tried lane minnows on the river
The rivers I fish are too shallow for a heavy lure like the lane minnow, they would work if the river was deep enough no problem
Where can I buy the Lane Minnow?
There’s a few tackle shops here in Ireland that sell them but apart from Google they can be very hard to find nowadays ☺️

I thought that was a Devon minnow when I was a kid?
No Devon minnows are different than these. Devon are heavier and have heavier metal, I don’t use them.
Strange how you weren't getting loads of pike hitting them lure?
You won’t get Pike with the lane minnows if you’re doing it right, need to be keeping the lures in the top 2ft of water and trolling 3-4mph, of course you will meet the odd pike, but no, mostly trout if done correctly. ☺️👍

Similar but them Devon minnows are heavier as their whole body is metal, I’d choose a lane over a Devon all day

Incorrect. This is an original lane minnow 15+ years old with a handmade trace inside, nothing close to a replica lure - they aren’t even in the same league .

Unfortunately their family business in limerick went out of business years ago, I’m pretty sure they sold the rights for “lane minnows” to the company who now sells them in the plastic fish-shaped boxes now, they are a bit heavier than the originals, but they work. Jc baits work also-they are a copy of the original lanes. I prefer the originals as they are lighter and spin faster , highter in the water where active trout like to hunt. I’ve had thousands of trout on all sorts of lanes over the years though. They all do a similar job. Nowadays I’ve moved onto small jerkbaits for my trout fishing, but those old traditional lures are always a favourite of mine.
