    Excellent Review ! Although I probably like it since it validates my Pulsar GD400BN from one year ago. I had been wanting to ditch my troublesome Onan 4k and I've always like "Honda type" suitcase generators. I had never seen a 4k suitcase and dual fuel as well! I've been using it for a year now and so far trouble free. It does easily run my rooftop AC although I'm in Alaska so that's not to tough. I further installed a propane tee and cutoff on my RV and propane is all that I've used so far. I really like seeing it under various loads and measured performance, again nice thorough review.

    Pulsar is impressive. Just saw the video where you are at Quartzite for the first time and asked if you had done a voltage drop test comparison. I see you have the power watchdog also, I love mine. When I run my Generators one at a time for maintenance I usually hook it up to my RV I have a 13.5 Coleman Mach something. I don't have a soft start but with the aid of the power watch dog app on my phone it helps me watch the amps where I can keep it below 15 amps. I start the A/C on low fan, than high fan, than low cool taking a few seconds each time than finally to high cool, normally I only reach about 12 amps. It is the amperage that trips the generator off not so much the wattage and this year we had over 78 days of triple digit temps in Texas. Man I need to stop watching your videos, I'm tempted on buying the Pulsar. Wish I had run across your video. Anywho, great video and great information.

    Great video! I also just noticed that the MXR3500 is made by a slightly different company, yet it uses the same engine and same case. Take a look at the spark plug boot on the Pulsar vs the MXR3500. The Pulsar is missing the rubber grommet to hold it firmly in place in the housing hole. The MXR3500 has the grommet. Weird that the same engine has 2 different coils. My Pulsar plug wire vibrates like crazy, to the point that it actually loosened the spin on terminal after just a few hours running! I contacted Pulsar and they sent me (no cost) a replacement coil with wire, but it's also missing the rubber boot/grommet. Weird. Also, I noticed that your Pulsar is getting a white spot on your air filter door. It's from the solenoid harness to the carb, pushing up against the inside of the foam and plastic on that access door. Mine is doing the same thing. Mine also has a white stress mark on the upper part of that panel, where the wrong size hose clamp was used to secure the propane hose to the inlet of the carb, and is also pressing up against the panel. I emailed Pulsar photos of my unit doing the same thing, and I told them my concern is not only the cosmetic aspect of the enclosure case turning white and cracking, but the forces and vibration of the propane line failing prematurely, and the same thing for the solenoid connection at the bottom of the carb. Anytime you have 2 things being pushed into each other and vibrating, you are bound to see a failure of the weakest thing. It's still a very impressive unit, especially for it's price point. I'm still trying to get more hours on my unit, to make sure it has no further issues. Some reviews noted that the single 15A outlet with TR (tamper resistant) is near impossible to push a male plug into, and some people noted that by pushing too hard, it actually broke the outlet as it pushed back into the panel. I took some dielectric grease and spread it on the outlet before inserting a plug, and repeated this a few times. The grease really helped to lubricate the TR shutters, and now all plugs, even 2 prong, slide in smoothly.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Před 4 měsíci +1

      My spark plug boot is correct and a full boot and cap. Yes the air filter door has the white spot like you noticed and correct, solenoid for propane switchover. I don’t have another white spot yet as a clamp looks correct on my main propane line but yes, the tamper caps on the 15 amp outlet like any of the ones that you buying the store are kind of junk. I don’t exactly like them myself. but I realize I probably wouldn’t use that outlet very much as that’s not the purpose at least for me with this generator, but yeah, some light WD-40 or some dielectric grease would be great to help loosen those up a little bit, but being that it is an outlet with the electric grease. It will attract dust and junk, which could actually make the tamper caps even worse in the long run, keep an eye on the generator and let me know. I only have about five hours.

    Got one of these, LOVED it...used it all last summer when I was camping off-grid...
    ALWAYS started 1st or 2nd pull...
    It was used to supplement my solar when there wasn't enough sun, or if I'd run my batteries down and it was raining...
    I didn't run it on "gas" but 90% LP, and the other 10% on engineered fuel, never faltered...
    ONE thing, make sure you change the oil on a regular basis, OR you will experience a loss in performance...

    @tundatime Před 4 měsíci +2

    I enjoy your videos, but mocking people for their comments on your last review is a petty way to start your video. Your points are valid but comparing an 1800 watt generator to a 3kw IS inherently unfair when talking about the loads they can handle.Comparing it with the honda 3200 is a much more apples to apples comparison and the price difference further makes your point about value for occasional use.
    With that said, id really like to see you review the new WEN generator models like the 56360ix. Ive been a fan of wen especially there bigger inverters but looking at specs these seem much more noisy than say the 56450i.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Point taken, I guess im just done with the same comments from the same people about the Honda 2200, which is what people always compare these small units to. And im not testing them fairly when they are not exactly in the same class. But I try to tell people what an item does do and what it doesn’t. Which sometimes takes a couple months to get more data and especially when it’s cool most every unit performs great. Add a hot day then you see if they can handle everything. But these little suit case units have been doing really well over the last year and a great size at a fair price. Wen and champion are great units, most anyway. The 56360 being gas only seems a little bigger than these but I would have to see. Also need to see what Chinese manufacturer makes it. As most of these are copies of another. The wen 4500 is a great unit and Ill be doing a review soon with the champion 4500 both dual fuel. And yes the smaller ones dont have as large a muffler or engine box around it to help muffle engine noise.

    • @tristanschaper281
      @tristanschaper281 Před 4 měsíci +1

      Most of the Wen is Rato I believe, and use the Honda clone engines, which are generally very good.

    In your opinion! What duel fuel generator is best for 30ft travel trailer?

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Před 18 dny

      That’s a tough question. Because it’s the person and where they go more than the trailer. If you are up north most the time then A/C usage is minimal so a much smaller unit will probably be just fine.
      For people south and who use the AC 24/7 then a medium unit will be better as it will last longer.
      I really like the champion and wen4500 dual fuel for the more heavy duty use. They are basically the same but the wen is cheaper. Which is this model here….amzn.to/3XoMhqJ
      For once in a while and running a few hours a day, I really am enjoying the pulsar 4000 dual fuel, simple, light and works great. Feed back from other users are very positive. The new maxpeedingrods is full of features if you like those. Same engine and made by dinking power / genmax who makes both pulsar and maxpeedingrods.
      So it’s more of where you camp and how you camp will determine what you need. Some want to run everything under the sun and some are more minimal.
      But these are the most popular models and ones I would also recommend
      Predator 3500 not dual fuel and now better option
      Predator 5000 DF now seems fixed
      Wen4500 DF remote start
      Champion DF electric start
      Onan 4500 gas
      Pulsar 4000 DF
      Maxpeedingrods 3500 gas
      New maxpeedingrods 4000gt….amzn.to/3KIxRKB
      Hope this helps

    I suppose there is the question of whether this is really a "high performance" engine or someone figured out they could make an "ordinary" engine run at a high RPM and then put it into a compact, light, and powerful generator? Like someone modifying their Ford Pinto to go faster on a supercharger. Just because someone figured out how to do it doesn't mean it was a good idea. Then again, I think more people would complain if these were failing right and left. Probably most people keep the load down most of the time, especially as it gets too loud for national park regulations at high loads. Also, this is probably not something most people run every day. If you want a generator designed for more use and abuse, generators for twice as much, twice the physical size, and weighing twice as much tend to be what shows up next.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Exactly if you dont abuse these they should last. I dont understand when people say I was running it at 3000 watts for 4 hrs when its hot out and it dies. Especially if you run them out of fuel as it’s a cooling agent and then you can risk scoring.
      Most national parks have a 60 DB limit but that’s at 50 feet….even the little Honda if loaded enough will be to loud. You have to get to larger ones or really small and just run a light load to say charge batteries.
      Noise levels are also much different when you add dirt, trees, and more that muffle the sound. Placing in a truck bed helps a ton!!!! Or of course your own sound box or even a gen tent can knock a couple DB off.
      So far these units for people who need basic power these will do fine. Owners play a big part in longevity of any tool

    Every time I think about getting one of the many low priced generators I end up reading the reviews on Amazon. They are all 4 to 4 1/2 stars. Great! Then I click on the one stars. Seems 5-7% of these things have serious failures and dreadful customer service and not returnable. I want one of these things for emergencies and I have never been particularly lucky. Ah for the days when you went to a local business to buy something like this and if you had a problem they could fix it. Now the China business model pumps this low quality stuff out and tuff luck if you get a dud!

      I hear ya. It’s tough. Yamaha has a few medium sizes like Honda but super expensive and also very heavy.
      A lot of people have had good luck with several of these Chinese brands which like you know, most everything is made there now. You can look at harbor freight or Costco for items you can return. Tractor supply as well.
      This gives you some box stores. Even Walmart. Just have to make sure the gas I completely empty and no fumes. That’s one of the reasons it’s hard to return. Shipping hazard

      That’s because you need a bigger generator if you are trying to always run 3000 watts and more. No generator likes to be maxed out. Like I said in the video if you are always running 75% and above especially when it’s hot out you need a bigger unit. 4000 is only the starting and that’s for like 1 second.
      You need a larger unit as you are over working that small one.
