This is ace. Needed someone straight talking to guide me through the bottom bracket replacement. This is so well done, it's fool proof. Keep the videos coming. Save money and do your own bike repairs!!
genius at work. thanks for that hope to be building my frame up in the next few weeks. every bit of expert advice helps.great tip on fitting the cups .
Best bike tech on YT. Those BB bearing tools are contradictory to how bearings should be removed - as in - never press out a bearing using the inner race as the contact. These tools always neccesitate the contacting of the inner race with the tool which leads to damage to the bearing. Also these bearing removal tools are absolutely extortionate - retailing at anything from £50 - £150 depending on the type of outboard BB. I've custom engineered my own version which retails for only £15.
A little tip for those who dont have access to the removal tool. Leave the cup with the offending bearing screwed into the frame but remove the seal. Then simply tap out using a 21mm socket ....jobs a gudden! (note: Only use this method if the bearing is to be replaced with a new one)
Good video..great tips on not over tightening. I wondered....at 05.57 and 06.06 you say...don't go braying at it? I know what you are saying (don't hit it too hard) but have never heard the word you use.
A cup removal tip tip for those dyslexics out there who suffer with left & right (like myself) Both sides are undone in the direction from the back wheel to the front. In my head I say ...back to front / over the moon. ;-)
This video is the reason I went with a chris king bottom bracket for my xtr cranks. All you need is a injection tool so you can purge all the old greese out and refill the bearings with new greese in a few minutes with a greese gun. The 180 dollars for tool and bottom bracket are worth it because the bottom bracket will last forever if you regreese the bearings at least once a year. Shimano bottom brackets are not serviceable so when you get water in the bearings you have to buy a new cup.
@eighteenbikes Great video Nick! TY. Can you please tell me where I can purchase the bearing tool, for removing and installing the bearing cartridge from the cup??? Thanks
Wondering about this oring that fits between the outer cup and the crank arm. I don't seem to have one on my ultegra bb, and I can' seem to find them anywhere; are they only used on the mtb cranksets?
Anyone have the part number of the bearing removal tool Nick is using at 4:19 in the video? I don't now why, but I'm having a hard time finding it. Can't locate it on Hope's website, and I have scoured sellers to no luck. Thanx
Nick calls it an O-ring, it's actually a metal ring pressed into the crank, so not one that you remove/replace unless you've managed some serious damage! CZcams won't let me post a link, so email me and I can forward you the link to the diagram that shows this. Si
If you wan't a bottom bracket that you can really service buy a chris king one. You can inject new greese into it with a injection tool that they make and all you do is pop a plastic seal like the outer one he took off then just plug the tool into the bearing until it clicks in and pump greese into it until you see all the old greese and fresh greese coming out of the seals. Then just unplug the tool wipe off the excess greese and put the plastic cover back on and your done.
To be honest, I just use a paper towel that I've lightly sprayed with some isopropyl alcohol if it's quite dirty and gritty down there, but just use paper towels on there own if they'll do the job dry. I was taught to not spray degreaser around if there's a chance it could get into the grease in the bearings. But I live not far from where Hope components are made and it's frequently a very wet and muddy place to ride.
I first watched this video 2 bikes, 3 years, and over 70,000 km ago when I purchased my Hope BB, hoping (see what I did there) I hadn't wasted £80 (stupid money for a BB at the time), and wondering if I should have gone even more stupid and got a Chris King BB like my cycling buddy. Watching again today because I need to replace the bearings for the first time. They go for £100+ now, but I don't think its so stupid anymore.
Excellent video, but I think bottom brackets have actually got worse as technology has improved, BB30's and those pushfits are flawed as they all rely on tiny tolerances and the slightest wear on the shell and you're stuffed.
Fantastic video. Brilliant mechanic, great camera work. Definitely, as has been said, the best ever video for bike maintenance.
eighteenbikes has some of the best bike repair vids I've ever seen. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge!
Great video - very very informative and I found it a great help.
Also nice to see a proper accent being used on an instructional video for a change.
Super Helpful! Thanks Guys, helped me service my bottom bracket that was creaking a lot. Thanks for being so detailed, made it easy for me!

brilliant. tom
excellent video!
do you use a torque wrench? is it necessary?
no antiseize on the cups threads?
useful video , does anyone know the name of the tool used inside the cup to knock the bearing out 4:29 please
Very helpfull thank you sir

Great video! just shame no HD option is available - 480p being maximum
What detail would HD allow you to see, that you can't see with 480?
Arent you suppose to torque the BB cups to manufacturers specification?
very helpful
my favorite part at 8:38. I've overtightened many a bottom bracket only to see them go to crap after 3 months of use.
Where can you buy the tool he uses to knock out the bearings from the cups??
Top man.
what cranks could you use with this bottom bracket

Does anyone know where to find the BB Press Tool used in this demonstration? I can't locate this tool anywhere on the Hope website.
Its so easy. Thank god I have hollowtech on both of my bikes. Yey!
what rear wheel are you using for this bike
Is it possible to replace shimano hollowtech II bearings with new bearings and if so what size are they? Cheers.
Proper Yorkshire, less is more 😁
I have to be fair, square taper bb is underrated these days. In my eyes they still hold the default crown!
What's the name of that tool (4:35)? Thanks.
Can you tell me the name off that bearing tool pls

What cleaner would you recommend for degreaseing the bb or do you just use paper towels

@MikeSomething12345 have u tried your local bike shop?
how come all general bike grease is colored?
i just fitted Shimano hollowtech today and feel like I shoud go for hope instead
Bearings should be pressed in if possible, hammer should be the last resort...Put in a vice if you got one.
@oitotheworld23 The Seal shop...

@tosher777 Dyslexics don't have trouble with left and right, they have trouble with spelling and reading :P
It's a Yorkshire term for hit hard - at least that's what it means in Barnsley :)
