RIP Diego. This was the first game I watched my favorite number 10. I was 15. Maradona passed today 11/25/2020 at age 60.
In the replay, it shows as if Erwin van den Berg were offside when he scored the winning goal. But he was not offside, thanks to his fast run behind the defenders when the pass was about to come to his path. Belgium did rely on their fast attackers like him and Jan Cullemans.

The holders stunned by the underdogs in the opening match of the 1982 World Cup in Spain. It was on a Sunday evening,about a fortnight into June,and I managed somehow to miss it being on the TV,not sure where I was. But everyone was talking about it the next day at college,where we were in the midst of a series of exams. Not the last first day surprise of course,happening again in 1990 and 2002.
Belgium was finalist of the Euro 1980, so not really that much of an "underdog".
It wasn't shown on British television. Only the goal was shown on the news. This was the days before wall to wall coverage.
@@Findo_Gask Actually that's not the case. There was pretty much wall-to-wall coverage already in 1982,with live coverage of the matches shared between the BBC and ITV. The only ones not shown were if they had to pick one from a pair of simultaneous group matches. I remember because it was the first World Cup that I watched!

Argentina was beaten by Brazil, Italy and Belgium in this WC but they beat those 3 teams in WC 86 & 90 but Germany who they beat in 86 got their revenge in 90.

Y, por perder este partido, Argentina cayó en una triangular semifinal con Italia y Brasil. De haberlo ganado, le hubieran tocado Polonia y la URSS, y pensar en una semifinal no hubiera sido tan difícil.

Passarella, el capitán, gran jugador!!! la parsimonia de Passarella!!! (un mundial horroroso, nada que ver con el Mundial 78 donde fue baluarte) Para mi, ni 5 Fillol podían hacer algo.. fijate los goles contra Italia y Brasil en la ronda siguiente, todos los defensores igual, corriendo desde atrás con la mano levantada pidiendo off side.... pero bueno, es futbol, es lindo debatir. La verdad es que en el mundial 1982 Fillol fue un desastre.

Today, the Belgian would not have had time to score. The defenders would have been faster and took the ball away from him. It was completely different football than it is today.
Los mundiales de antes eran partidazos nada que ver como son los de ahora.
Esto se debio a que eran menos equipos hasta el 78, pariciparon 16 y del 82 participaron 24 esto hacia que solo las selecciones de primer nivel asistieran a los mundiales, en la actualidad el numero de equipos es muy alta porque prevalece el interés económico que palidece este torneo.
