I still remember watching this game, at what seemed like 5 or 6 in the morning... falling about my living room in ecstatic celebration, yet always remaining completely silent... all because I didn't dare wake my parents up. It was a ridiculous scene, but one I'll never forget.
I will never forget this for opposite reasons (you saying 5 or 6 in the morning betrays you as an American) :D
I watched this match at home, with two colleagues from school (we were 13, so is that US Junior High?), and my mid 70's grandma, who knew nothing about football (if you watched the match you know that in the Eastern side of the Atlantic we call soccer football).
Portugal was clearly favourite for this match, and for the group. 13 year old me thought there was no way this would not end in very one sided match in favour of Portugal. We would win by 5 or 6, we thought...
20 years later, and I am still wondering what happened. It seemed like every US goal was a textbook case of "everything that can go wrong in a football match". We believed, until the final whistle, that we could at least get a draw out of it. No luck. The US won.
I love the US for saving the world from tyranny in the 1940s, but I will never forgive you for this. :D
Portugal is extremely unlucky when it is in the same group as the US. The same happened in 2014. I guess if the US is drawn in the same group as Portugal, you can start planning your trip to the last 16 stage. lol
Funny, I'm older, and had to work. Recorded the game, avoided any discussion of it, get in my car and tune the radio to a country station, figuring zero chance they are covering the WC, within 20 secs the dj said the score..so bitter sweet not to see it unfold.
Portugal has never beat the U.S at the world cup.

2002 seems like yesterday, but it also seems like a million years ago.
I remember waking up at like 3AM to watch this in the States, was an amazing win for the USA team with the young Donovan and heading of McBride!

One thing to remember this Portuguese team got to the final of the European Championships two years later, so this was a great result for the US.

True but this Portugal team were still very formidable, they had Rui Costa and Luis Figo among others, and remember they got to the semi final of Euro 2000, without Ronaldo and were unlucky to lose to the French.

me too man, i was 9 i remember finding it so hard to watch the games since i lived (and still do) in he west coast and the games were on anywhere from 10pm-4am.

Remember, in 2002 soccer wasn't maybe the 7th most popular sport in the US, so it was incredible that the US won
Misinformation. It was the fourth most watched sport in the US then, same as it is now. Soccer passed hockey for viewership very shortly after MLS was formed. Tennis and golf have never commanded big TV ratings.

What a game, WC 2002 was by far the best performance for USMNT in our tournament history(not counting 1930, my grandparents were not alive at that time). I had a dream 10 years ago, that USA beat Portugal 3-0 in world cup final 2026. Lets see if it will happen, we have never lost to Portugal though so I am confident we beat them if we meet in the knockout stage.
USMNT is also full of young players. They’ll age, reach their peak fitness and improves their skill. I hope 2026 is the year the US finally win a men’s fifa World Cup. (US won the women’s cup 4 times yet no one even considers it)
But Ronaldo is also likely to retire before 2026. So that’s one threat gone.
That second goal should not have counted as an own goal. That was legit Donovans goal. Richochets are not own goals. The second Portugese goal was definitely an own goal as Agoos kicked straight into his net. The portugese defender had the ball bounce of his head. No different than a free kick.

I skipped school here in Portugal to watch this game. It was a huge disappointment... 😅 Our team was stacked with amazing players, but physically and tactically not well prepared for a very well managed US team.
