Moon Channel; Episode 1 - The Low Stakes Social RPG
In this first ever episode of Moon Channel, we explore the humble roots of the Social RPG genre, and look to understand the reasons why the genre seems to resonate with so many people.

Aloha - my moniker is Moony, thank you for tuning in to Moon Channel. It is my goal to bring you informative, interesting, and wholesome content, in a family friendly manner.
By trade, I'm an attorney. I work in immigration law by day; a very stressful, high-stakes field. Before I started Moon Channel, often when I'd get home from a exhausting day at court, I'd turn on some nice, relaxing music, and maybe put-on a video essay to unwind.
There were some days though where I wished there could be a channel that was just a little more serious in its tone, without being anxiety inducing; something a little more mature, without being condescending, or boring.
Moon Channel is my vision, brought to you. And it's my hope that you will get a little joy, and find a little peace, in the videos I bring to you.
Thank you for tuning in. It means a lot to me. And I hope, my videos can mean a lot, to you.

That Biscuit story got me to well up in tears.
My little sister had a special toy too. She just recently won a battle with cancer. Maybe I'm oversharing, but
Thank you for including that bit. Much love to you and your family
You are not over sharing, just "sharing". Ive read this and felt it.. hope life gets better for her and you. Cheers from France ❤🎉
I came here after your God-killing JRPG video because I knew I had to consume more of your content. What a touching way of delivering information, with a thoughtful and prose-like quality. I can't wait to continue and watch the rest of your videos. Great work 😭
Thank you for your kind words! I am glad that even these older, experimental videos can still be meaningful!
The social RPG genre is more alive than ever, just as you said.
Thank you for taking an interest in the older, experimental videos! It means a lot that you'd take the time to watch and comment!
@@moon-channel Just discovered your channel through your Nintendo IP video. I loved your amiibo card story in this one!
This video was of special interest for me as I’m also fascinated with this genre. The Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons original game is so influential that I’d say games like Stardew Valley almost cross the line of a blatant copy.
I agree

Hey Moony, just wanted to comment that I've shared almost all your videos with my friends and we all think it is the greatest content in a long time. I recently moved to Japan but I grew up in a East Asian background in Australia so I love how your videos reflect a balanced view of Western/Eastern philosophy so that people can learn and be the best versions that we can be.
I am seriously considering to be a Patreon supporter for the first after watching all your videos.
Please take care and I think just listening to you ramble and not have a script would be equally as wonderful.
Hi Dj! I am so glad that the videos can be both enjoyable and meaningful for you. I hope that you won't feel pressured to join the Patreon: your support as a viewer is already very much appreciated!
I came here from your video about girls’ games and I love this video too! The stuff about family and peace has me all emotional 😭 Especially because I have little sisters too. I had wild world and later new horizons. Deena was my first favourite villager and now I love Melba and Pashmina
Me too
dIdn't expect to cry over Biskit today.
This.

@@Kas_Styles do you like the video
You are so good at this. That last section about your sister actually made me tear up a bit. Thank you for this video
16:00 Agreed.
I can’t believe this has under 15 comments and under 300 views, I hope it gets pushed to people who just watched your most recent Nintendo video, just subbed!
You’ll definitely get 1k subs soon, your videos are top tier quality
I am very grateful that you would come back to this older video to leave such a kind and encouraging comment. I hope that my content may rise to meet your expectations!
@@healgothIts insane to believe you had under 1k subs less than 4 months ago
At the time of this comment, this video now has over 10k views. Truly a testament to the quality of this channel.
Seems to have reached a few more
Much like the games it explores, I find this video calming and quietly appreciative of the small things in life. Something as seemingly inconsequential as the beginning acknowledgment that not everyone can or should like the same things, but understanding others' feelings about them helps us to understand them just stuck in my heart, as did the Biskit story. (Not sure if you're aware, but the composers are missing from the video description.)
16:00 Agreed.
You're not crying I'm crying!
(Please give Biscuit a little kiss.)

Just found your channel today via the Nintendo IP video and had to check out your other videos. This one gave me instant nostalgia for Harvest Moon. Was outright shocked it doesn't even have a thousand views yet. You've literally made my day and I wanted to thank you for that 😊
I did plant a tree 20 years ago! Just about the only positive result of those 20 years for me, hmmm. Lovely job Moons!!
What a joy to find a great YT channel!
Me and my son is currently playing animal crossing on the switch and some botw. Game's have the ability to create great memories.

CZcams is so broken for only pushing this to getting 400 views in 2 years. Great video

hah. this whole channel feels very close to home during a time where Im miles away from it. so glad to have found you.

(add.) I really appreciate this channel existing.
lmao "low stakes" cuz I deadass get more stressed by those "low stakes" because they matter more to me oof (I know these are not new or unique feelings)
Agreed
I really enjoyed learning about the sort of beginning of what eventually became “cozy games”- as someone who grew up playing animal crossing with my family through every iteration, I loved the story of your father catching fish with you guys as a family :) I went on to love farming games through stardew valley and I’m so grateful we are in a time where people are creating and appreciating this type of game!!
Agreed
I just want to say, I've just come across your channel and I'm very glad I did. In every video on your channel that I've looked into so far, there's something that goes above and beyond what I've seen in other video documentaries. In this one, it's reminders of innocent childhood and empathy for the children of today. All too often, otherwise great documentaries I've watched have some form of condescension toward kids who can't imagine what dial-up was like or what groundbreaking graphics were considered back then. At the very least, many have an underhanded prompt for older members of their audience to laugh at the younger ones for their lack of experience. If they have too many of those "jokes", they show their hand and lose me as a viewer.
I want to thank you for not only not doing that, but actively framing your 1997 story in a way that brings me back to those relatable days. Not only that, but it also explains to younger audiences the excitement of a new game, series and genre through a lens they (hopefully) understand; Holidays, friends and presents. Your empathy for people who can control very little in their lives right now, least of all when they were born, is deeply appreciated by me, and I sincerely hope others can find it in their hearts to agree.
Thank you, sir. Much like many others commenting here, I'd love to see your channel grow and bring more people more happiness, love, knowledge and empathy.
Our humble beginnings, the beginning of our gaming journey. I love this channel.

Your voice and way of speaking are super calming 😌. You have definitely succeeded in making the perfect niche content that you mentioned on your channel's about page!

It's as though this channel was tailor-made for me. Thank you so much for all the videos you've made, each one is truly a gem. I'm glad you're finally starting to get attention, and that the algorithm saw fit to recommend you to me.

This channel has been a joy ever since I found it. Knowing that this is just a thing you do for fun really temps me to give it a try myself.
Keep up they great work, and I'm looking forward to more

There you got me to cry. This is deeply touching … thank you.
The part at the end about your sister's favorite villager looking like her favorite stuffed animal, then getting her the card for christmas, which she takes with her when moving despite leaving other trinkets-- my heart about exploded. That was sooo sweet
This genuinely made me have teary eyes. I live your passion for video games and inspire to be like that :)) I hope your sisters know that you are a good brother
Agreed
That ending,
I'm not crying you are
I watched your video about Nintendo and loved it, Went to check your channel to see what else there was. What a great video. You have an incredible gift of storytelling. I got a little emotional when you described the moment of fishing with your dad. Some of my best memories in gaming are sharing a village with my siblings in Animal Crossing for the gamecube. I subbed and look forward to the next video, take as long as you need to put the heart into these that you have. 👍🏼
That last bit had me a bit teary eyed.
Hi! Found your channel through the killing god in JRPGs video, I'm currenly bingewatching your channel, love your work
I got into your channel with your SEGA video, and I've been really happy watching your other videos, I can't believe that you do not have more views or subscribers, I find your content entertaining, informational, and also very emotional, it really shows that you are passionate about what you decide to make a video about, and I truly hope that more people are able to discover your channel so that you can grow, you truly deserve to get more views and subs, and not going to lie that bit in the end really got me to tear up a bit, because it just reminds me that even some of the people we watch online, have families and their own backstories to tell, I wish you much success in your future.
So underrated... you're very knowledgeable and it's a treat to watch your videos.
You deserve so much more views for what you put together! Honestly...
Anyhow... I hope you have a nice rest of your day whoever happens to read this comment.
Man, I just found your channel and it's awesome.
Agreed.
As an aspiring game developer, this and the other videos on your channel are inspiring and helpful. Many thanks.

I don't usually comment in videos, but I'm here as yet another viewer who teared up at the last bit about your sister. I used to share an island in City Folk with my little sister a while back. I'm now a few countries away from her and I miss her immensely, every day. I'm saving up to get gift her a switch with New Horizons so we can at least keep playing together through the game.
Your content is so, so, so good; thank you so much for all of your videos! Happy holidays for you and your family :)
this channel is so awesome, I love how chill this video is
Agreed.
After 3 of your videos the time has come for me to do a marathon of all your content. Biskit story already got me in tears, for I've had similar relationships with many characters in my childhood, Frog from Chrono Trigger in special. Thank you so much, love from Brazil ❤
Agreed.
Omg the Biscuit story is so heartwalming ❤
The ending was so fricking adorable 😭
There are some people who just don't like fast paced games that involve explosions and sword play.
I like a calm, friendly game like Harvest Moon or a match 3 game.
True and I Agreed.
I loved playing Animal Crossing when I was younger, this kind of chill busywork games is still very enjoyable now. Minecraft has taken a big place for it, although it's different.
I'm going to enjoy this channel, that I know.
After watching your most recent video about killing Gods in JRPGs, I’ve decided to watch the rest of your videos, starting here. 10/10 video
Agreed
The Biscuit card hits hard. Similarly, I fell in love with the squirrel Nibbles as a kid in Wild World (then cried when she moved out) and once I realized that I could buy a Nibbles amiibo card, I was on it in an instance. The Nibbles card is probably one of my most prized possessions lol
That was a great first video!
Agreed.
I love Animal Crossing. I remember seeing a commercial for the Gamecube version on TV. My mom noticed my mild interest and bought the game from Blockbuster on a whim. That was the first and last time she ever would buy me a game outside of my birthday and Christmas. My attention was largely on other more action packed games. Who knows how long it would have taken me to get into Animal Crossing (and the cozy genre) had she not done that.
this video is so under viewed. and that last part has killed me! love this.
Agreed.
I loved the Stardew valley music. So soothing and comforting because of all the hours I have in that game. Sometimes I put on that music to fall asleep to :)
Me too
Got recommended to check out your channel by Adam Millard. I've queued up this and a bunch of your other videos that sound interesting. Really enjoyed this one and the personal touch at the end about Biscuit.
I can't believe how professional this video and your most recent Nintendo one turned out, u're a natural!!
Agreed.
26 years later...sheeesh lol I still have game magazines that talk about the upcoming FF7, Harvest moon, etc. Been a helluva ride.
I am loving your channel. Keep up the good work 🎉
Agreed.
I knew I was living in the best timeline when a Nintendo direct had more than one farming sim announced.
thanks!
Thank you for your kindness, aag24 -- it is a very meaningful gesture!
i love animal crossing so much. social rpg games are underrated af
This was a great videi. Your harvest moon analogy was spot on. I spotted the gameboy advanced version and it was the one video game i got that year. I cherished that game so much i actually finished it
Thanks for your beautiful work.
Great video once again buddy ❤️
You're voice is so calming
I was expecting you to talk about The Sims, that game was the one who introduced me into social games and make me realise that games aren't "gender locked" (my family thought that The Sims are games for "girls" bc my sis played it a lot) and everyone can enjoy a good game
Shoutout to biskit
Harvest moon (and rune factory) was my ‘girl game’ growing up, granted I still often choose to play the boy in these games as the dating options for girls are often less asthetically appealing. Although have only managed to actually choose a marriage partner in the games that ended if you didn't 😂 ace problems.
6:00 10:53 I love the related visuals here
Love this!
Something about the way you tell your stories makes me tear up
The stardew valley music is just perfect.
Shout out to social RPGs 🎉❤
who allowd you to make me cry ;c (affectionate)
Ah ! I wanted to find the music, but the description hasn't been updated. Aw well.
Loved the Biskit story, by the way !
Subbed, well done
Someone who likes harvest moon >>>>
The heck? I used to play harvest moon, and my wife never did anything other than stand in front of the house. I had no idea she would ride a horse or visit the mountains.
Why am I crying about biscuit?????
I would have loved animal crossing if it wasn't for the real time aspect. I remember getting it from GameStop from a "buy one get one free" deal so I decided to try it. Got through the beginning then the game said I had to wait 8 hours to continue so I said, "Screw that!!!" and returned it the next day for $1. XD
🍪
Where did the saying, “The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago; the second best time is now” come from?
I actually find Animal Crossing too stressful to play. The fact that the game punishes you for vanishing for long periods of time rubs me the wrong way. I have ADHD, and a life, I'm not going to be able to log on every day, and having the game change because of that is VERY MUCH not what I want.
Rune Factory is my favorite game series though.
(you didn't added the links to the music artists)
hello YT video watching people
anyone know the name of the song that starts at 1:42? it sounds super familiar but i cant place it
Please don't forget the Stardew valley video!
I remember falling in love with the harvest moon ds and ds cute version on my DS lite, it felt so special to see my plants grow and unlock events. I still play it to this day, and I liked star-dew valley for similar reasons. I tried to play animal crossing horizons but I felt a bit too overwhelmed with all the choices I guess? I’m sad that the company behind harvest moon split up as the newer games seem to be missing something, but nonetheless special ❤ and to be honest, I loved the simple graphics of the ds games. I encourage everyone to try one of their games 🫶🏼
