I hope you had a great time in Uruguay, even being the expensive place that it is... I live in California, and I miss that place a lot. Hopefully I'll be visiting, in the near future!

I'm guessing, not a lot of English spoken? Was accommodation pricy too? Beautiful stone work, looks very nice, thank you!

Uruguay imports almost everything, so the country is expensive. Accomodations are more than most South American countries, but not unreasonable. A coffee and a sandwhich will cost you around $10-15, which can be US prices.

It's the middle class country of South America so prices are comparable to US prices. @@thestumblingnomad

How do you recommend I divide my time if I have 31 days to visit Rio De Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Florianopolis, Buenos Aires and Montevideo?

That sounds like a fun trip. Sao Paulo is the biggest city in South America (it's massive) with a lot to see. I'd start in either Rio and go south or Beunos Aires and go North. In my opinion, I would spend the most of my time In Rio, Sao Paolo and Buenos Aires since they have the most to see and do... Montevideo is great, but you will only need a few days to see the city. Plan on being in Montevideo on a weekend. Florianopolis is fun, surfing, music, just a beautiful beach city. I hope this gives you some help. Than ks

From what I read, the requirements for entry from the USA - even with no visa requirement - are formidable. Several documents that must be translated into Spanish by a Uruguayan certiified translator at your expense. Several weeks of delay between submission of all documents and your receipt of an entry approval! I'd love to visit, but I would not submit to these impediments and costs. I'll spend my money when I arrive at my destination.

I dont remember exactly, but it wasn't very difficult entering Uruguay. I took an overnight bus from Brazil to Montevideo. The bus driver took our passports at the border and then gave them back to us with the entry stamp. I don't rememebr having to provide any additional documents. I know of several Americans that have done day trips from Buenos Aires to Uruguay, with little to no problems. As US citizens its pretty easy entering most countries in South America with the exception of Bolivia where a visa and documentation is 100% required and enforced. Good luck!!!
