Nothing like the sound of two J-79's in full AB ! Gotta love them F-4's, I feel blessed having been able to be a Crew Chief on them.
I was a WCS troop on them at MacDill and Ramstein.
Very cool Ralph, I was stationed at Spangdahlem with the 81st Wild Weasels, and then at Edwards with the 6515 OMS Test and Eval squadron, both were very cool assignments !
I was at Bitburg in the mid 70's. Weapons loader on F-4E. Loved those birds and Bit was a cool assignment.
It was a great assignment Rick, I used to go over to Bitburg AB to purchase electronics, you guys had a much better selection of tape decks,recievers, and reel to reels. Going TDY alot really was a great way to travel Europe and Spain, it is something I will never forget.
The F4, with the hardpoints all loaded, looked like the most bad-ass thing ever. Like, where are the wings, how does it fly? And tthat unmistakable nose. Simply beautiful. Australia had them while the RAAF waited for the F 111 (which was a huge crowd favourite, every celebration had to have a fly-over with dump & burn 😁)
to arrive a decade late.
That AND the F-105 Thunderchief. Wild Weasels for the win. There was just something about that era of military aircraft that just oozed personality.
The Rat
I was a crew chief on them for ten years. Launching a full dirty bird was quite the challenge. Guaranteed to end up with at least one Phantom bite😁😎
RAAF F-111's had an extended wingspan compared to those flown by the US, giving it greater range. So there was some extra development. The deal with Mc/Douglas was that they would supply spares for the service life of the aircraft. Not realising that Australia would operate them until 2010, so they got their fingers burned with that deal. It now takes 4 Super Hornets and a tanker to deliver the same payload at the same range, of one F-111. Aust. Govt. should have asked for a modern version as well as the F-35.
Long ago, I heard someone say: "the F-4 is proof that with a powerful enough engine, even a brick will fly."
Back in the 80's, when I was in the Air Force, I had the privilege of an F4 ride as part of my cross training. I also spent 2 years living on an F4 base. To this day, she is still my all time favorite bird.

This was 2016. They're all retired now. Collings hasn't flown theirs in years. Japan too. It's only Turkey, Greece, and Iran now.

Where I lived back in the 80's I'd watch these F-4s fly in for a landing at the airforce base near by. They'd make a left turn for the runway and I could see the pilot inside the cockpit. Also they were super loud.
TX Air National Guard at Ellington AFB in Houston - they had them, my best friends older bro flew them. Bad ass planes for sure. Classic!!

My uncle flew the F-4 in nam and brought him home even with a lot of damage
I was a structural technician on F-4E. They are built tough, even having 1/4" armour plating under both cockpits. Littrally a flying tank.
And those are the cleaner engines. I remember sitting alongside Forbes Air Force Base watching flights of four smoking up the downwind ramp. You couldn't see through it. Looked like a tractor pull with 4 tractors pulling at the same time.
McConnell, ANG, same, they would dump some smoke!

F4 was top dawg then. Post life extension it got F 14's & 18's at Philadelphia Naval Shipyard.

I can still smell the 1970's Blue Angel air shows and just now getting my hearing back! The F-4 was/IS the best flight demo air plane, BAR NONE!
F-4s were our premiere fighter on my carrier USS Midway. Those twin J-79s need lots of JP-5, to keep her A$$ afloat. I absolutely love them. Great video of its approach ❤️🇺🇸

It's a shame that when these F4's first came out they had no guns and it unfortunately took a few to be shot down and pilots lost to then have them refitted with guns. But nonetheless these jets are so distinctive and slick looking that they still are my fave

I watched your other video and in comparison, the F-15, was much louder, when approaching, than the phantom; which could be how the Phantom got its name.

The Phantom was known for its straight line speed, but poor maneuverability. A lot were shot down by the MiG's in air to air combat during the Vietnam war. But the Americans don't like to admit that
