  • The coding of Fire Emblem games contains many mysteries. Let's take a look at what Awakening's holds.
    Note: All music used in this video comes from Radiant Dawn's unused tracks. That game has so much unused music you could score an entire game with it!

    Maybe Phila's orginal name was Andrea... That WOULD make sense for a SpotPass character. She 'died' but could've survived. I mean, Emmeryn fell off of the FE equivalant of Mt. Everest and lived.

    Argh, I KNEW I'd forgotten something! There was one more thing I'd planned to talk about:
    There's an unused enemy faction name called "(Feroxi) Rebels" thats description is "An army of rebels who resists Feroxi rulership". Some people take this as evidence that an entire Ferox civil-war arc was cut from the game.
    My personal theory: this was an enemy faction for a one-off Paralogue. Possibly one of the children's Paralogues. Maybe Severa's, because the enemies there being Valmese rebels in Ylisse made no sense.

    • @BigKlingy
      @BigKlingy  Před 8 lety +16

      Walhart being Alm's descendant was only mentioned in the Japanese background website, which also mentions that the continent of Valm is named after Alm. You can sort of infer that from Walhart being the ruler of what used to be Valentia, given how Alm ruled there at the end of FE2.

      +BigKlingy from the names i'm guessing roy/eliwood would be the descendant cause seliph/Sigurd technically are chroms ancestor along with marth, and priams got ike covered, walhart covers alm, so all that would be left is again roy and eliwood/ hector and lyns decendant if you believe hector married lyndis, and maybe macaiah but i'd doubt they give that much lord love to tellius

    It's been a while, but there's one more bit of unused data that became known recently.
    OLD HUBBA, of all people, actually has a barracks roster profile hidden in the game's data. It's mostly a joke...
    "An old man who just sort of showed up. Mostly useless, though he can
    assess relationships. Oh, and he’s a few millennia old or something. The
    one with the wildest love life. Born on February 29th."
    But the "mellennia old" part implies that Old Hubba is actually the same fortune teller who appeared in Fire Emblem 4: Genology of the Holy War on SNES. (It's slightly more clear in the Japanese version)

    • @ArthurGaming146

    I think Leopold is Libra. Libra doesn't appear on the list so perhaps Leopold was his original name, but was changed to make it more gender-ambiguous.
    24:14 This actually makes lots of sense. Validar (or Basilio. I can't remember which) said that there were Grimleal spies watching Chrom wherever they went, and there's an armory on every map.

    Such a beautiful character design, that amounts almost to nothing. What a fucking waste.

    • @superkonijn988
      @superkonijn988 Před 7 lety +4

      She atleast had a significant role
      In FE fates Birthright Chapter 12 you get introduced to 2 characters
      1st one is Kaden and the second one is layla.
      The problem is that while Kaden joins your army, Layla just leaves after the chapter and is never mentioned ever again..
      I mean why bother introducing a character who only gets like 1 minute of screen time only to be never seen or heard of again...ever.
      I mean they could have just made her a Generic NPC and it would have been fine but they made a unique Design for her that makes her look like a playable character.
      Its also a waste that they made such a good design for a character that only appears for less than a minute.

      They almost certainly never made it out of the planning stages, since there's no evidence of confessions, supports, portraits, not even concept art. Of course, it's entirely possible they could be repurposed for a future game. The Hauteclere axe from FE11 originated as an unused weapon name in....I think it was Path or Radiance or Radiant Dawn.

  • @Ocsttiac
    @Ocsttiac Před 8 lety +78

    I would also theorise that Sumia's change to Pegasus Knight is a call back to Marth and Shiida's relationship in the Akaneia games, i.e. a Lord marrying a Pegasus Knight.

    • @BigKlingy
      @BigKlingy  Před 8 lety +17

      Sumia in general is a call-back to that. (And it shows up quite a lot in the series, e.g. Tana in FE8 who even has blue hair. Sumia may be the first "Shiida" who's not a Princess though) I think she was always a Pegasus Knight though, Cavalier was probably planned as one of her other options, probably instead of Armour Knight.
      Come to think of it, I just realised something. NONE of Chrom's potential love interests are royalty. This is...very strange by FE protagonist standards, who usually have AT LEAST one marriage option who's a royal of another nation.

    • @Ocsttiac
      @Ocsttiac Před 8 lety +9

      It's hard to say whether "Shiida" can be considered an archetype. I usually view every starting Pegasus Knight as a "Shiida", regardless of whether they're royalty or not, or if they're part of a Pegasus Knight Trio or not.
      Also, I think Chrom has no marriage options with royalty because Ylisse has so few nations, all of which don't seem to get along well with each other, so he's normally limited to looking into his own country for suitors.

    • @BigKlingy
      @BigKlingy  Před 8 lety +10

      I general I'd say the Shiida archetype is:
      First Pegasus Knight to join. Emphasises Skill, Speed and Luck over Strength. (The second Pegasus to join is the "Catria", who has more Strength and Defence but less Speed)
      They do have a tendancy to be a potential love interest for a Prince though:
      -Shiida and Marth, obviously.
      -Fury for Lewyn.
      -Whoever the one was from FE5... I think they may have had a crush on Ced but I don't think that pairing is possible.
      -Shanna for Roy (though Lilina is more similar to Shiida in terms of overall role in the plot, plus Lilina recruits a ton of random enemies just like Shiida did)
      -Florina for Hector
      -Vanessa for Innes
      -Marcia is an exception
      -Sumia for Chrom.

    • @Ocsttiac
      @Ocsttiac Před 8 lety +2

      BigKlingy Clair from Gaiden also counts, though she marries Grey, a common villager.
      Also, I'd say it's a stretch that Karin had feelings for Ced. The closest we get to this notion is that he gave her the Sety Scroll, which he's only supposed to give to his fiancée, but judging from the circumstances, that's not at all the meaning behind that event. Besides, Karin x Felgus is far more suggested.
      One more thing: Does that make Catria from FE3/12 a "Shiida"? 'Cos you know, she joins first.

    • @BigKlingy
      @BigKlingy  Před 8 lety +2

      Catria still keeps her stat specialty, and Shiida keeps hers, so I still think they're in the same archetypes, just with Catria joining slightly earlier. (It's not like Shiida really joins LATE, after all)

    The Swordmaster placeholder for a Villager promotion actually makes sense based on the promotion for Villager in Fates. Villager has Weapons Master as a promotion, which it shares with the Samurai (essentially Myrmidon), and the Samurai promotes to Trueblade (essentially Swordmaster) in Fates. It could be that Weapons Master was a planned class for Awakening, and that both Myrmidons and Villagers would promote to it. The Myrmidons may not have had Hero as a promotion, but instead their Hero sprites may have been place holders for the Weapons Master, the way the Swordmaster was a placeholder for Villagers.

    • @BigKlingy
      @BigKlingy  Před 8 lety +1

      Maybe. Though remember that Villagers could promote to a Swordmaster-like class in Gaiden as well. (Villager > Mercenary > Swordfighter > Dread Fighter > Villager again) Villager had other promotion options there but the Dread Fighter line is probably the most famous due to the loop.

    The most people here are in the game, so the unknown characters could be people that actually are in the game.

    I think you may have missed, the generic enemies actually have quite a few unused expressions; in game they only use three portraits- the default one, injured one, and Risen portrait.
    but after the game's data was dumped, it's seen that all of the generics (at least the ones who have visible features) have 5 portraits: default, smiling, attacking, injured, Risen.
    some have less, and some have more, either because of a duplicate or an extra expression (interestingly, I found the only generics to have an extra expression were female).
    I dont know exactly what these expressions would have been used for; but if we look at Fates, the player character and enemy expression both change depending on whether you have an advantage or disadvantage. it seems Awakening was also going to implement this detail but decided not to.
    you can look at some of the portraits I refer to here: www.spriters-resource.com/3ds/fireemblemawakening/sheet/64972/
    a final thought: why doesn't the sorcerer class have any concept art?

      Wow, amazing info, seriously this is so interesting. I can't believe CZcams auto-marked this as spam, just because it contained a link.
      I think your explaination makes sense: they were going to implement changing expressions based on who had the advantage in a fight.
      What I also find interesting is actually getting to see the "full" versions of these generic portraits, because the bottom screen cuts them off. These "full" portraits would normally be seen in dialogue, but I think Bandit, Priest, Assassin and Soldier are the only ones that actually appear like this. In particular, I really like the generic Wyvern Rider and Wyvern Lord full portraits, a shame you never get to see them in-game.

More than likely, Leopold would have been an enemy unit because he would have been a Wyvern Rider working for the main enemy. However, once he talked to Chrom, or maybe even Cordelia, he would have joined the Ylissians.

    It is possible, for the forgotten characters, that they were put in a certain order that was changed as the characters were scrapped. Tracie was probably scrapped because they wanted to keep the number of children at 12 and wanted to avoid confusion. Here are some etymology that might help with the personality of the scrapped characters:
    Leopold is from leudi "people" + bald "bold" Or bold with people. Leudi was changed to Leo because it lion, which is an animal attributed to fire, gold and kingship.
    Tracie can come from Theresa (could she be another healer?) or Thracius which means "from Thracia" Weird.
    Andrea comes from greek, and it means "manly"

    Tracie... Well, I'm not sure. Just going by names, I feel that as a 1.5 character, perhaps she was going to be a sword user? Maybe Hero, or perhaps Paladin?
    Andrea sounds interesting to me, as most seem to believe that this was Philia's name before it was changed. So, either she was indeed Philia, or she was soneone else... If it's the latter, I'm gonna go with her being a Sage.... Though, her being a descendant does sound intriguing... Maybe the descendant of Ephraim?

    About the swordmaster sprites for Donnel possibly being a placeholder for a promotion of the Villager class. All special classes (dancer, manakete, taguel, villager, conqueror, grima (the class) and the DLC classes, Bride and Dread Fighter) all have 30 levels, and there is no promotion for these classes. And all of them, with the exception of Dancer and Villager, have stat caps similar to promoted classes. And while the lack of a lancer class for Donnel outside of Villager is disapointing, he is actually one of the most broken characters in the game once you can use a second seal on him and make him a mercenary. Good god, his luck stat, combined with Aptitude, makes for a broken character.

    • @BigKlingy
      @BigKlingy  Před 8 lety +1

      My theory was that, at one point, Villager was not a special class, it was a normal unpromoted class that had its own promotion. It stat caps being incredibly low could point to this.
      And actually, Donnel is generally considered quite bad at a late-game level, as his caps besides Luck are all very low. So while he caps his stats quickly, once others cap all their stats they'll be much stronger than he is. And many second-gen characters can get Luck as high as his with Armsthrift while having better Strength and Speed. Donnel's main area of decency is during the midgame. Even then, he's pretty much unusable on Lunatic since it's nearly impossible to train him.

    My personal theory for "Andrea" is that she was originally a descendant of Micaiah. However, due to the fact that Micaiah was a light mage, and with the exception of the Book of Naga, there is no light magic in the game, she was scrapped. Her scrapping could also have to deal with the fact that Emmeryn was a sage, so she might've been scrapped because the game designers didn't want to add two sages so late in the game, when only one appeared in the story.

    My theory about Andrea is that she is also the descendant of a previous Fire Emblem protagonist, like Priam. Who, I'm not sure maybe one of the female protagonists, maybe Lynn or Titania? If the former, she's a Swordsmaster, if the latter, a Paladin.
    As for Tracie, since she is between Henry and -Lucina- Marth, perhaps she is connected to Henry in some way? My theory is that she was intended to be his twin sister, but was later scrapped. I don't know why, but I think she seems like Henry's little sister to me. And since they're twins, they'd also have the same class sets.

    while Gregor would maybe have been the Barbarian class you get after that chapter or during it. As this is the only class in game that goes unused by your party in the final game.
    All other Base classes (tier1) are someone's default class. I think when leopold was removed they turned Gregor into the mercenary, leaving Barbarian mostly unused.

    Weird when I hear a name like Leopold I picture something like Gangrel's beta design. I do wish we got trickster that somewhat matched the generic portrait more mostly because I like the design especially the one in Fates.
    The thing about Donnel having Swordmaster makes me think the Villager class would've been more like it was in Fire Emblem Gaiden. In that game Villagers would randomly promote to either Mercenary, Soldier, Archer, Mage, or Cavalier. As you can see it was kind of broken being able to promote like four times. So I was thinking Donnel would've randomly promoted to either Hero, Warrior, Bow Knight, or Swordmaster (instead of giving him a first tier class he might've just went to second tier to avoid being as broken as Gaiden Villagers). I guess they just dropped the idea and made Villager a recruit-tier class.
    Also you missed two minor things, the Dance ability was originally a skill and not just a command, probably changed so it wouldn't take one of her skill slots. And early images showed no unique outfits so your whole army wore blue except oddly enough Lisa whose map sprite matched her yellow dress.
    Interesting vid, I've always been interested in the What Could Have Been when it comes to games and FE has a lot of cut content throughout the years. People are already finding cut content in Fates.

    The male Priest portrait is actually used. On Eirika's spotpass team, she has a priest who is supposed to represent Moulder. He uses that generic Priest portrait. Risen priests never happen in skirmishes though. Unpromoted healer units actually NEVER appear as enemy units in this game (chapters, paralogues, and skirmishes anyway). The only healer units are promoted classes that can wield staves.
    Just something I love; you can see the Brand in Lucina's left eye during her confession.
    I wish Tiki had Pegasus Knight so she has some variation compared to Nowi. I'm actually glad they gave Aversa dark mage as it is a far superior class compared to mage. And lol Swordmaster Donnel would be insane. I wish Villager actually had a promotion in this game.

    • @robbieb.6948
      @robbieb.6948 Před 7 lety

      Yeah, I wish they each had unique class sets completely (well aside from Manakete obviously). Maybe Pegasus and Mage for Tiki and Wyvern Rider and... Cleric for Nowi? Because Clerics in the series are usually depicted as small, fragile female characters and it'd go with how people think she's a small, young girl. I can just imagine Renewal on Nowi. That'd be insane.
      Speaking of Renewal, I hope they bring back Imbue from RD. It was a really interesting skill... a Renewal in essence but it ran off of the user's magic stat with the stipulation that it can't be equipped to mages (which Elincia doesn't fall under which makes her INSANELY good). The only time I see them bringing back that skill is when skills are either just randomly given to characters or assigned with scrolls like in PoR. I can't see it being a class skill.

    • @BigKlingy
      @BigKlingy  Před 7 lety

      Imbue was actually really cool, though the one issue with it was that, at endgame levels, it totally outclasses Renewal, since even physical users could easily cap Magic via BEXP, and get around 20 HP healed per turn, much better than the percentage-based Renewal could ever do. And I didn't know it worked on Elincia. That's insane. I mean, she's already amazing in that game

    The first one seemed kind of iffy to me. Why would they have the names for the English versions of the scrapped characters if they were cut early on?
    Maybe Phila was Andrea or Tracie, and Leopold is probably Libra like you pointed out.
    Aversa being a able to be recruited during the main campaign would've made a lot of sense though, considering the history with Robin. But it also makes sense why it was scrapped, bc it probably came off as unnecessary and clunky in the main story.
    That being said, it still doesn't answer my first question. Did they start translation before the game was done? Or were those notes just translated?

    • @BigKlingy
      @BigKlingy  Před 8 lety +2

      I think the list of names was ripped from the English version. Sometimes, translators are given scripts with no way of knowing what is used and what isn't. I've been on a fan translation before, so I can tell you the way names and scripts are stored in a game's data often isn't logical, so it's difficult to tell where the unused content is: sometimes it appears in the middle of used content, and often NOT translating it could screw up the game. I've even heard of cases where unused dialogue actually gets dubbed (Persona 4), voice actors probably wouldn't have any way of knowing what's unused.
      In some cases the translators DO find the unused content, all the unused weapons and items in FE7 have their names as "DUMMY" in the English version. Maybe here they just didn't realise, or thought these names belonged to NPCs or something.
      The thing that still confuses me is Tracie's placement though: like I said in the video, between Henry and "Marth" i.e. Lucina doesn't make sense unless either another character joined in Chapter 13, or Lucina joined later.

      Libra being recruited in Nowi's chapter would make much more sense than Gregor being the one to save Now since it kinda fits in with Libra's character and Gregor would have been working for the Plegians as a mercenary in the next chapter and you would have to recruit him somehow

    Could "Leopold" be an unused name for Libra? 'Cause Libra is no were to be found on the list, and Leopold's name is around were Libra joined and those names are very similar.

    If Mercenaries promoted to Swordmasters, then I think Thieves would have promoted to Bow Knight and they wouldn't have to create the Trickster class, which I would have been fine with personally.

      +Kazumisama97 Honestly I always predicted they'd promote to Warriors. I mean, the Bow part of Warriors has to come from somewhere, right? They I learned Warriors were removed from Fates, it only has Berserkers.

      The main reason I didn't mention that is Chrom is already implied to be descended from those two, since the Brand of the Exalt is heavily implied to be the Mark of Naga. (Seliph's conversation at the end of Lost Bloodlines 3 basically confirms it)

      @BigKlingy  Před 8 lety

      Regarding what you said about Lucina, I don't think that's true. The beta voice, even though it sounds very flat, is still clearly a girl's voice. They're just called "Marth" in the data because that's the only way the game can treat them as the same character as Masked Marth. I'm pretty sure Lucina was planned out very early into the development.

    I'm gonna have to say that I haven't ever seen Chrom's Japanese confession before, but I like it better than the english one. It sounds like he calls me a fart!

    • @BigKlingy
      @BigKlingy  Před 8 lety +2

      The second part of the English confession is basically the same as the Japanese, but they went way too over the top with making the first part sound flowery and it ended up sounding incredibly corny.
      I've been looking through all the Japanese confessions while making this video, and weirdly enough some of the English ones almost feel like parodies of the Japanese ones, or at least meta-humour for those who've seen the Japanese confessions. (e.g. Japanese Stalh says "I'll never take my eyes off you again" completley seriously. The English version adds "unless I'm about to run into a wall." I almost feels like a joke by the translators that somehow made it into the final script.)

    Andrea and Phil’s are a pretty close theory but since it’s next to Priam who from radiant dawn or path of radiance does anyone think it could be? One guess I have is mist/Boyd. The other could be Micaiah/Sothe, maybe another child could be someone from a different game all together or most likely a a character who changed their name

    I know im coming to this years later, but do you have a source on where you found out Gangrel's portrait is an unused placeholder for Morgan? On TCRF Wiki it states that its simply an unused leftover and nothing more

    • @BigKlingy
      @BigKlingy  Před 3 měsíci

      This video predated the TCRF info on this game, so that might've taken precedence. Most of my info here comes from Serenes Forest, although the page in question is hard to find now, as it was a News page rather than part of their Unused Content section.
