I just want a whole Nic Cage Dracula film. Full origin story. He almost deserves an Oscar for his performance. In Redfield’s apt was just such good character acting.
I LOVED the black and white homages to the 1931 film starring Bela Lugosi. They are SO close to the original and clearly come from a place of genuine respect and love for that film that I was kinda moved and genuinely impressed.
I notice that Dan is keeping his voice at a lower volume, likely because it’s late at night and there are people in the adjacent rooms … which made me wonder what it would be like to overhear the guy in the next hotel room doing a ten minute long monologue about a movie. If anyone ever bangs on the wall telling you to shut up because they are trying to sleep - or don’t want any spoilers - please give us a blooper reel, Dan!
I saw it last night and thought it was great! I would actually like to see a prequel showing Dracula's rise to power. I thought Cage's performance in the black-and-white scenes at the beginning really gave old-school Bela Lugosi vibes and it might be interesting to see Cage do a more classical, Lugosi-eske performance.
I had a fun time with it too. If you go in with an "Army of Darkness" frame of mind, you will have a blast. If you think it's gonna be serious at all, you will hate it.
The movie was 100% at its best with relating the dracula/renfield movie with a typical toxic relationship. I feel like if you stripped away the awkwafina plots and put more focus onto that, it really would’ve resulted in a fantastic movie. Nic Cage absolutely killed it though.
Agreed. After seeing the trailers I didn’t think the whole cops / crime family subplot would take up so much time and I was disappointed that the movie didn’t focus more on Dracula.
I just saw it and I liked it fine! It also had one of the most creative end credit sequences I've seen in a while! It really pays homage to the classic monster movies.
Just saw it today. I thought was so great! I thought that it was really fun, violent and hilarious. Nicolas Cage was amazing and really impressed me a lot. Nicholas Hoult was also really great. I did think the Awkwafina plot was not super necessary and didn't add a ton but she did well with what she was given. Had such a good time. :)
My friend is the biggest werewolf/Dracula fan I know and he has had this movie on his radar for months now. Needless to say, we’re probably going to enjoy it😎
Great review I absolutely love Nicholas Cage and he made a great Dracula I do recommend seeing this movie. Nicholas Cages's acting is so great in it. It definitely should be seen in the theatre
I have just seen my very first video from your channel… I instantly subscribed! You are making the exact reviews I have been searching for a long long time. Thank you so much for your great work!
Saw this yesterday and had a lot of fun with it. It's tonally all over the place and predictable but all the insanely over the top gore always had me laughing.
Renfield, directed by Chris McKay and starring Nicholas Hoult, Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz, and Nicolas Cage, is a modern monster tale based on Bram Stoker's Dracula. The movie follows the story of Dracula's henchman, Renfield, who is incarcerated in a lunatic asylum and is seeking redemption by helping Dracula with his nefarious plans. While Renfield has its moments of humour and Gothic charm, overall, the film could be a lot better and smoother venture. Its biggest flaw is the need for a compelling and coherent storyline. The narrative jumps from one scene to another without exploring essential character arcs and plot points. While having some moments of depth, the titular character, Renfield, is mainly utilized as a sidekick to Dracula, failing to fully realize his character's journey. The editing and cinematography could be more impressive. The movie is shot in a dark, claustrophobic setting, sometimes adding to the eerie atmosphere but becoming repetitive and dull to watch. The use of special effects could be more consistent, which detracts from some of the more ambitious scenes. Despite the movie's shortcomings, the cast's performances, especially Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage, are commendable. Hoult's portrayal of Renfield's internal turmoil is nuanced and convincing, while Cage's performance as Dracula is over-the-top and hilarious. In conclusion, Renfield may have its moments of entertainment, but ultimately needs strong storytelling and visual execution. Unfortunately, it fails to match the standard set by other horror classics and eventually becomes a forgettable entry into the genre.
One thing that really pulled me in was the recreations of the 1931 Dracula film, particularly the shot of Renfield aboard the ship, with his insane smile and laugh...
Exactly what I wanted to hear. If there is one thing I hate hearing about when you see fun concepts like this is the idea that they weren't utilized to their best potential. So many great B-Movie ideas that ultimately never quite impress all the way, but glad to hear Renfield will not rest on it's laurels with just being amused by the idea of having Nic Cage playing Dracula at the expense of everything else.
I fully agree with you that’s it’s a “just good enough” movie. It doesn’t try to be more and this is why I enjoyed it so thoroughly. I miss going to the movies and having the option of seeing some dumb film that wasn’t trying to win awards and didn’t have a budget of over 100 million, but was just trying to keep you entertained for a couple hours. That’s what this film was and I really liked it, despite (or because of?) it’s flaws.
I probably will go see it tomorrow. I'm definitely going to see Suzume, and this movie is only 90 minutes, so perfect for a double feature. Ever since they showed the teaser with the support group scene, I've had a good feeling about this movie.
It'll be the end of May before this one hits theaters in my country 💀 ah well. I'm looking forward to it, the trailer looked like a lot of fun, and I am perfectly happy with a mid-budget fun 1,5 hours!
The fact that this thing cost 65 million yet Beau Is Afraid cost only 35 is insane. There are like 5 locations in this film. The movie itself is "fine." No better, no worse.
Since i first saw the trailer for this, i knew i had to see it, then seeing it was nic cage doing dracula, i knew i was most defo goin to see it. But i havent seen it yet, but by tomorrow, i will have, n i have a feeling i will not be disappointed...❤
One of my most favourite films, they way they played each others characters, it was amazing. One fault tho, in my opinion, it was about 30 mins to long!
@@kimmii2063 both Cage and Travolta were excellent in it you're right. I was about 14 when I 1st watched it, loved it, the action and life swap stuff. Haven't watched it for years now though to be fair.
@@kimmii2063 I hear they're remaking it. Cage and Travolta did make the film what it was (John Woo too of course). Be interesting to see if they can recapture that energy. I don't feel hopeful but we will see.
I do not agree with your comment that its not good and its not bad. Its good. And its definitely worth watch in theatres. Its enough and as you said sometimes enough is good enough. That is best way to describe it. Its good enough. Worth the money. The best thing about Renfield is how focused the movie is on its plot. It does not try to get too deep into its concept and yet its not too light as well. The action scenes and the acting are great. The acting is very good, and the action scenes are not only well choreographed but also well placed in the movie. There is no mindless action or gore just put in for the sake of visuals. In some ways Renfield and Megan are masterclass for what you called mid budget movies. How to select a familiar premise and then develop a limited plot and work on making it genuine and entertaining. Something both Megan and Renfield did perfectly. And it is movies like these that can bring the renaissance of mid-budget movies. Where big bang action or CGI is not required. But a simple idea which is then developed into an entertaining plot. Something which the D&D could not do. D&D had a good plot, characters and settings but then went overboard with its narrative trying to stuff just too much of spectacle and adventure into its plot.
Dan! I don’t know if you reply to these but I need a recommendation. Should I go see renfield this weekend? Or should I go see the Return of the Jedi 40th anniversary in theaters?
Im taking a break from movie going this week 😂 I’ve been practically every weekend since there’s been nonstop, major movies coming out that I’ve been waiting to see. Next week I’m back in to see Evil Dead Rise then Guardians 3 the week after lol this movie looked fun and after hearing this review, Im sure it is. Nice, sounds exactly like what I expected this to be based on the trailer. I’m even more certain now that I will check this out sooner or later. EDIT: So I finally watched this and I enjoyed it a lot. It’s not a masterpiece of filmmaking but it was a lot of fun and sometimes that’s enough. Nicholas Hoult as Renfield was very likeable and Nic Cage just hit it out of the park with his take on Dracula. The idea of Dracula as a narcissist that manipulates the co-dependent Renfield worked just as well as I expected it to. Very enjoyable and entertaining flock.
Hi Dan! Thank you for the review! I still have to watch Dungeon and Dragons, so I'm a bit behind, but I'd love to see this movie at some time in the future.
Probably because they’re not listed on Box Office Mojo and a lot of places only use them as a source. It’s the highest grossing domestic movie worldwide, but not overall. It soon will be, though
I really enjoyed it, but it was definitely flawed. When it comes to the blood thing, I actually rewatched Ready or Not before I saw this, and it has a great combination of cgi blood and slinging fake blood on the actors too.
Re: blood on actors. Seriously, when any other Hollywood production (I'm looking at you, MCU!) starts to bring realistic blood and gore to its over-the-top CGI fights, I'll fault "Renfield" for this. But let's face it - from musicals to romcoms to war movies - Hollywood ain't into realism. Especially when you're an antihero in a choreographed bloodfest vampire movie with a comic edge. It’s a light movie but I would not pay full price though. Matinée or wait for streaming. You don’t need to see this in the big screen. I am disappointed when I learned Robert Kirkman wrote this; I was expecting more.

I would definitely rate this top 5 of the worst movies I have ever watched. Probably top 3 even. What was that? No plot, horrible acting, who picked the female officer actress. HORRIBLE. It was bad beyond words and I expected so much more.
obligatory face-off reference noted and appreciated.
Oh, I see. I thought it was a reference to an early Cage movie called "Vampires Kiss." In that he wore fake plastic vampire teeth.
Ah, Nicholas Cage. An actor who is a genre all to himself!

Fun fact: Nicholas Hoult played Nicolas Cage’s son in the 2005 classic, The Weather Man

He definitely knows what he is bringing and leans in heavy for this movie and last year’s Massive Talent. He is definitely parodying himself.
I absolutely surprisingly enjoyed this movie. it was so much fun. It didn't take itself too serious and I loved it my guy. ❤
It’s lots of fun!

Damn this was funny. The violence and gore. Was like Evil Dead 2 and Shoot em Up had a baby and that baby was raised by the finale of Dead Alive
Interested to see where this one lands on the charts. There wasn't a single regular showing at my usual theater only restricted showings.

I saw it Friday afternoon and loved it! I kept waiting for a review bit it looks like YkuTube didn't notify me about this one.
Getting a group to see it Sunday
I really thought that the opening joke would be Dan asking “but does it - suck?” in a Bella Lugosi accent.
One of my favorite NC movies is color out of space which also happens to be the closest we've come to get an accurate lovecraftian adaptation.
I definitely want to see it, but will wait to see it on my TV.

ever since I saw the trailer for this at the cinema I've been looking forward to this movie, it looks like so much camp fun + Nicolas Cage!
Hope things are ok ❤🤞🙏
Saw a part in the trailer that was in the movie. This was a good time.
Hmmm may see renfield tomorrow
Saw it on Thursday and it was FUN! 👍
I already have my IMAX ticket for Suzume tonight. So, that might be my single movie theater experience this weekend.
Best time in a cinema for years
Cool review. I am intrigued to see a good, fun movie. Especially two Nicholas and the promised hijinks.

Definitely checking this out. I am always for supporting our 95 minute movies
3:20 Cage was on Colbert yesterday, and had some really thoughtful insights about the character, I guess he doesn't half-ass any role!

I wonder what nouveau shamanistic rituals Cage used for this one.
hollywood needs to put Shohreh Aghdashloo into literally everything
Why are news articles claiming mario as the highest grossing movie globally and not reporting on the two movies released by china
Probably because they’re not listed on Box Office Mojo and a lot of places only use them as a source. It’s the highest grossing domestic movie worldwide, but not overall. It soon will be, though
thought it was ok
The best Nicholas Cage is Nicholas Cage uncaged.
