  • Photographers tend to care greatly for cameras and lenses. Your tripod needs a little love, too. Tripod maintenance is essential to its longevity. It’s a little tedious, and let’s admit it, not the most enjoyable part of photography. But, if you don’t do it, you are cutting the life of your tripod short.
In this video, I’ll show you how I care for my carbon fiber tripod. I’ll show you the “quick clean” I do after almost every photo shoot. Also, I’ll show you how I take apart and clean my tripod.

Thank you, Scott, for validating essentially what I did after my tripod was inundated by a "sneaker wave" at the Vik black sand beach in Iceland just a year ago. Talk about the water serving as a conveyor of gritty black volcanic sand! That evening I rinsed the tripod as thoroughly as I could in the hotel shower, then disassembled and cleaned it much as you showed upon my return to the States. One thing I did not think to do was lubricate the threads for the screw clamps on my aluminum tripod legs. After watching your video I broke out the silicon grease for my underwater camera housing and last night applied a bit to the threads of the tripod clamps. Mahalo!

Hey Bill... My closest to a volcanic sand beach was visiting a dormant volcano in the Philippines. This was before I was touting a tripod around. I recall the dirt in the area being very fine and powdery. Not sure if that's typical of volcanic sand, but oh how easily that grit got just *everywhere*.

Been waiting for this one! So helpful and very timely as someone hasn't cleaned a particular tripod since November :( Those plastic pieces always scare me even if I lay things out systematically. Thanks Scott!

Oh boy... and I know the conditions you were in last November. Get busy, Frank! 😉

It may not be a problem for your tripod but for most, a check of the pivot bolts, bag hook cap, etc., is a good idea. I lost a bolt and hook on my tripod once because it was on the back of my pack and came loose allowing the bolt to fall through the center section. The pivot bolts on the legs will also work loose from opening and closing. I do a bolt and cap check about every other time I clean mine.

Tripods are ridiculous these days. Very nice and crucial for shooting rifles but might as well take care of something u spent 600 bucks on lol
