One of the most eagerly anticipated cars of 2015 has arrived in the UK, Henry Catchpole gets behind the wheel at Anglesey Circuit for this first drive review.
This is one of the nicest looking cars to come out in recent years imo. It's not all about the track i doubt most owners will take it to the track. it's a beautiful GT with some raw performance as well
ye ye Its the fact that people such as yourself like them that puts me off so many of their cars. Knowing that you dislike this car makes me certain its one of the few great ones they produce.
ginge82 I will leave you to your unbelievable stupidity and ignorance and hope you will never be able to afford a sportscar because you're not worth driving one.
+ye ye geez really? Why would u wanna put people down like that man. There's no reason for it. If that dude wants to buy an amg gt then let it be. No need to be ranting about it.
+ye ye It is simpletons like you that they have catered for in the past that has rendered most of their cars thoroughly unlikable and given the brand a certain 'pikey' image. I commend them for attempting not to do that anymore. You will simply have to find another company to buy your 'drug dealer done good' vehicles, that is if you can actually afford them, which I doubt.
Eugene Hvorostyanov No need to compare it to the 911 turbo because of your humble opinions? why didn't you tell them earlier looks like they are making a huge mistake, I mean did they even ask you?
Eugene Hvorostyanov No need to compare them? You do realise that Mercedes built this car specifically to battle the 911 right? Same goes for the F-Type. Their sole purpose as cars is to try to get 911 sales.
SilverArrow WilliamsMartini of course it will be faster. It's AWD and general performance figures are better. Both cars are desirable in their own way.
Interesting... most people are bashing the car although I really really loved this one. I always prefer the best Porsches and Ferraris over the Mercedes but this vehicle really made me feel something else haha
This is the kind of car that Mercedes excels at. I've never been a fan of their saloons and coupés, but they do roadsters better than any of their rivals.
This car looks amazing in the flesh. I was looking at one in my local dealership at the weekend. A matt silver GT S. priced at €170,000. Shame it was already sold, I had that much cash on me.
ShaunB38 Hellll no. I couldn't justify to myself spending that much on a car unless it were a classic guaranteed to maintain or increase in value. I've got retiring early in my sights, not throwing away huge amounts of money in depreciation. I don't really walk around with 170k cash on me ;-)
If you're looking to buy a car only for stats and lap times- objectively in that case and not subjectively then just buy a corvette Zo6. This car is CLEARLY a GT car hence the bloody name. It's not meant for the track you ponce.
I previously owned the 911 (great car) and just test drove the Turbo S. Outstanding vehicle! . I put the deposit on the GT-S for the heck of it and also it is literally 80K less expensive than the Turbo S in Canada. 230K vs 150K or 200K for the straight 911 turbo. It looks fabulous in the Selenite Grey. Both the Turbo 911 (2014) and this car are great in appearance and performance. Anyone that has driven both would have have a difficult time criticizing one over the other. I am sure the 911 Turbo will be faster on the track, but driving in town is impossible to push to this limit so who cares.
The Front wheels turns pretty sharp and the camber angle is pretty steep. With Limited slip, it may have sensitive steering response. The AMG GT also got closer gear ratio, more torque per tonne however, its damper is too stiff, easy to run into power oversteer, when it does, the car maybe too agile without traction control and stability control aids. Comes to drift, it's not as dynamical as BMW due to stiff damper. Traction may cuts in unexpectedly. Stig crashes Koengisegg CCX is a good example.
I thought the GT was gearing more to fight the standard 911, not the Turbo. I'd really love to see a shootout with the AMG GT, Jaguar F-type, Corvette Z51, 911 (and/or) Cayman GT4.
Maybe I'm weird but I MUCH preferred the more sculpted lines of the SLS. The AMG-GT just looks too "melty" for me. The rear end is ok but I think the front is hideous. I would pick a 911 or F-type Jag over one of these, any day.
Great car, better looking or at least a little more special looking than the Porsche. Considering the Turbo S is almost as fast as a mclaren or ferrari I would say the AMG will be 1.0-1.5 seconds slower for lack of grip and inability to put power to surface. Cant wait to see, also carbon fiber wheels on the turbo???
Too many car companies use fake sounds in the cabin now listen to the drive by of the AMG GT sounds so quiet. the cabin was louder than the actual engine. Merc stated it uses 2-3% amped engine sound. The company Evolution Studios in the UK who created DriveClub on the PS4 recorded real engine notes for the AMG GT and gave it to Mercedes to use in the cabin. blog.us.playstation.com/2014/05/29/why-driveclub-could-be-the-most-realistic-sounding-racing-game-ever/
But the cars are better sound insulated, so you get less road noise, tyre noise etc. but you still get the amazing sound from the engine. What's not to like about that?
SilverArrow WilliamsMartini mercedes volkswagen audi also use speakers to amplify sound. The AMG boss even stated it has amped sound in the cabin its even in the booklet..
Looks so weird at some angles, and I know Mercedes AMG's always sound loud and bassey, but it's almost too farty for me. Prefer higher revving 6 cylinder noises any day.
The test against the Porsche is a bit pointless.. The Porsche got all wheel drive, rear wheel steering and costs about 30 000 more so obviously the AMG is going to lose. Would be nice to see a comparison with a carrera GTS.
This car doesn't do it for me quite like the SLS did, or the SLR for that matter. The SLS looked so good that I didn't even question it being the follow up to the SLR.
EVO if you want to blow my mind, and take your production to the next level, film these in-car reviews in 360 degree video so I can put on my VR goggles (GearVR) and look around as your flogging these supercars/hypercars around the track.
Interesting that people generally really like how this looks or hate how it looks... I think it looks great. I would take a 911 for sure, but there's nothing wrong with this.
Why the pointless comparisons to the 911? Just accept this car for what it is: a two seater grand tourer! Cars like this make the automotive world more interesting and besides the 911 is over rated apart from the GT3 and Turbo S variants.
Not that it matters but I'm not sure about this thing. It's obviously brilliant but it feels like it's something Mercedes could've built themselves. I quite like the way normal AMGs work, how they completely shred their tires the moment you touch the throttle. That's what set them apart from BMW's M-series and Audi's RS-series. I don't think this should try and beat the 911 by being planted and precise, I think it should be an SLS in a new dress. I want the AMG factory workes to step away from a completed car and wonder who it will kill and how. I own a 2012 C63 AMG and I swear that thing wants to kill me. It wants me to suffer. When you drive it on a motorway it makes a low angry bellow, like it's just impatiently waiting for a corner so it can go in for the kill, and if it misses it'll shred its tires in protest XD I think this makes AMGs far more human than most other German cars. It also makes them more exciting to drive.
I don't see why the AMG is being compared to a 911 Turbo when Porsche launched a "Carrera GTS" which is the same price as the AMG... Wait for Mercedes to launch a Black Edition and put that up against a Turbo!
Tailgate very much 911 , think they had very clear from the beginning the target audience . Looks nice still not quite sure of all that AMG gadgetry, still think it isn't a pure breed GT car like an Aston or 911 GTS, sort of . Still nice and specs are pretty amazing . Cheers EVO
And now give us this car with a 3.0L straight six (no turbo or blower) and without any other gimmicks (like electrical seats, ac etc.). Down to 1300kg it would be the real deal... It's a pity, that this will never happen.
I flicking the back end out as easy as it looks? Car reviewers who do it always seem so calm and do it with ease. They do it with £1 million ferraris on tight roads. I have no experience in powerful rwd cars I'd probably shit myself if it started going sideways. You just ease off the accelerator and it goes straight again, more power if you want it to keep going sideways?
Cornwall1888 I'm no pro but for the most part it is, once you have enough practice. Be quick but smooth and deliberate with your inputs. Don't go maximum attack straight away ease into it and get the feel for it first. The balance of some cars are drastically different than others. The hardest part for me was to hold a conversation at the same time without skipping a beat. Sticky tires will give you a lot more control at higher speeds but also cost a lot more to just blow smoke.
This car in the early stages of the video exhibits under steer many times. Only about half the video when he turns off traction and go for drifts that the car looks like it is handling well. What gives?
>6.3 engine can put out 700 hp >sounds better >they put a smaller less powerful engine in their "fastest" sportscar >they write 45AMG on a 2 litre 4 cyl R.I.P. real AMG company.
I'd take this over a 911 Turbo any day. Aside from the noise, it has a presence the Porsche doesn't. Yeah I'm sure the Porsche will go faster around a track and accelerate to 60 a few tenths faster, but in all honesty, to 99% of the people driving either of these it doesn't matter
Love Mercedes love everything about the vehicle except 0-60 in 3.8s. 2016 cadillac ATS-V twin turbo 3.6l v6 is going 0-60 in 4s. Probably at half or 1/3 the price. It's a nice ass Mercedes though!
These type of videos are getting monotonous now, putting a car round a flat track, can you not think of anything more interesting or benefitting to an end user watching this video...?? 1. Real world mpg when driving nicely and when thrashing... 2. Service costs? 3. Tyre costs? 4. Review of entertainment packages... I dont care how fast it goes round a track!!
This is one of the nicest looking cars to come out in recent years imo. It's not all about the track i doubt most owners will take it to the track. it's a beautiful GT with some raw performance as well
Chris Harris may be a better driver, but this dude wins on the hairstyle.
Good review. I especially like the "Crazy looking Professor" presenter.
Henry is doing a great job on these. Very personable!
Beast! One of the very few Merc's I want to own.
ye ye Its the fact that people such as yourself like them that puts me off so many of their cars. Knowing that you dislike this car makes me certain its one of the few great ones they produce.
ye ye I will leave you to your angry rants from your mother's basement. Thank you for living up to the stereotype.
ginge82 I will leave you to your unbelievable stupidity and ignorance and hope you will never be able to afford a sportscar because you're not worth driving one.

No need to compare it to 911 turbo, because imho performance wise they in different leagues. Better suited companion would be Jag F-type.
Eugene Hvorostyanov No need to compare it to the 911 turbo because of your humble opinions? why didn't you tell them earlier looks like they are making a huge mistake, I mean did they even ask you?
Vic Thaking Did you get butthurt? I like comparisons which outcome is hard to foresee and it isn't a case with merc and 911.
Vic Thaking porsche will cream the merc.
Eugene Hvorostyanov No need to compare them? You do realise that Mercedes built this car specifically to battle the 911 right? Same goes for the F-Type. Their sole purpose as cars is to try to get 911 sales.
John Harrison Typical Porsche fanboy...
Such a beautiful car and what an amazing sound.... right at the top of my list.
Big fan of this car, think its a lovely machine!
I won't be suprised if the 911 Turbo is faster than the AMG GT S, because both cars are still great!
SilverArrow WilliamsMartini of course it will be faster. It's AWD and general performance figures are better. Both cars are desirable in their own way.
Was already tested on a german Channel, and the 911 turbo was faster :) still an awesome car though
SilverArrow WilliamsMartini the Amg Gt S looks a lot more better, and when I say a lot, I mean a lot, by far.....A LOT :)))
Can't replace the beauty SLS AMG Black Edition
deoxide09 Did you really think that car was beautiful? It looked cool in my opinion, but in no way beautiful.
It wasn't mentioned to. Merc decided to bring out a monster.
Amazing car! Well done AMG, the closest anyone will get to the Porsche 911!
SilverArrow WilliamsMartini closest? the 911 destroys this shit merc
Yung Dro Porsche fanboys.... Such deluded pathetic people.
SilverArrow WilliamsMartini Ugly as fuck, sounds like shit and gets outperformed bruh
Yung Dro Twelve year old fanboy... How cute and pathetic & deluded
SilverArrow WilliamsMartini
I will bet, porsche will be faster more than 1 second
This car looks amazing in the flesh. I was looking at one in my local dealership at the weekend. A matt silver GT S. priced at €170,000. Shame it was already sold, I had that much cash on me.
Alien Or Sutin Have you bought one now? or still looking? :)
ShaunB38 Hellll no. I couldn't justify to myself spending that much on a car unless it were a classic guaranteed to maintain or increase in value. I've got retiring early in my sights, not throwing away huge amounts of money in depreciation. I don't really walk around with 170k cash on me ;-)
I know you dont literally walk around with it haahha!, goodluck in everything you have planned dude I wish you the very best
So it seems I'm the only person here who loves the looks. What an astonishing profile; that rear end just looks classy.
Beautiful car and great driving.
Briefly drove one of these back in April of this year...fell in love with the damned thing instantly!
I'm torn of the design of this car, sometimes I love it other times I'm not so sure, I really need to see one in person
i love the look of this car so much i see these all the time in los angeles, they are like 100k or more for the base one
Henry, you're a champ, mate!!!
First thoughts are "meh", I don't think it will put up the best of track times. That yellow paint job didn't help.
***** It wasn't designed for the track anyway
If you're looking to buy a car only for stats and lap times- objectively in that case and not subjectively then just buy a corvette Zo6. This car is CLEARLY a GT car hence the bloody name. It's not meant for the track you ponce.
The colour is amazing! love it

Whats the music at the end?
What is the song called, starting at 05:28 ?

what's the music at the end? really good track
Henry Catchpole Does do great reviews

Yung Dro Nothin a set of straight pipes won't fix
Yung Dro no fake sound in the cabin for mercedes, wtf are you on about ?
BMW uses speakers to amplify the sound, Mercedes doesn't.
SilverArrow WilliamsMartini mercedes volkswagen audi also use speakers to amplify sound. The AMG boss even stated it has amped sound in the cabin its even in the booklet..
It looks a bit like the Porsche 928 GTS from behind, and any 928 from the side. Beautiful vehicle.
Beautiful car
What is the deal with serious understeer at 2:32 and 2:41 ?
Looks so weird at some angles, and I know Mercedes AMG's always sound loud and bassey, but it's almost too farty for me. Prefer higher revving 6 cylinder noises any day.
Stefan Wojcik it sounds amazing irl, but in video, the cameras fail to capture the real sound
SevenW25 V V8s are supposed to sound "loud and bassey"
The test against the Porsche is a bit pointless.. The Porsche got all wheel drive, rear wheel steering and costs about 30 000 more so obviously the AMG is going to lose. Would be nice to see a comparison with a carrera GTS.
A decent echo of the 928. Very decent.
So is it better than Tardis?

eyyyy my nigga Henry!
cgravity123 wait what? can you still own people?
A series????
Base GT vs 911 GTS, similar in pricing, I'd really like to see that comparison :-)
Love a road test this vs a Ftype R coupe
its a tyre shreader
a fun car. what a shame that it replaces the sls, which was a deadly serious car
Got that mic then :)
Great vid, car etc, Thanks
Interesting that people generally really like how this looks or hate how it looks... I think it looks great. I would take a 911 for sure, but there's nothing wrong with this.
'Solarbeam' yellow paint is an extra £10,695!
Why the pointless comparisons to the 911? Just accept this car for what it is: a two seater grand tourer! Cars like this make the automotive world more interesting and besides the 911 is over rated apart from the GT3 and Turbo S variants.
am i seeing a pattern here?
SLR McLaren > SLS AMG > AMG GT
seems to go down performance wise
queenform but they almost have the same performance
Not that it matters but I'm not sure about this thing. It's obviously brilliant but it feels like it's something Mercedes could've built themselves. In Australia the porsche gt3 and amg gts is the same price... The 911 turbo is 30% more expensive
Turbo s AUD 450k
Gt3 300k
Amg gt s 300k
I don't think we need a video to know which car will be faster. Porsche 911 Turbo. :)
Mercedes is bold to go for the 911. Car looks and sounds good but Porche's are in a different league with there precision and comfort
What engine does it have ? :D
Rear end is a little 928ish!
Looks like theres a lot off understeer
I don't see why the AMG is being compared to a 911 Turbo when Porsche launched a "Carrera GTS" which is the same price as the AMG... Wait for Mercedes to launch a Black Edition and put that up against a Turbo!
color no , car yes ! very good looking shape and awesome sounding .
AMG has already confirmed a black series in development with 600 hp from the same 4.0 TT. Think about a lighter SLS Black Series!
Henry you are so fkn cool
Tailgate very much 911 , think they had very clear from the beginning the target audience . Looks nice still not quite sure of all that AMG gadgetry, still think it isn't a pure breed GT car like an Aston or 911 GTS, sort of . Still nice and specs are pretty amazing .
Cheers EVO
Amg tuned cars some of the best in the world. You can be neat & tidy with it or a complete ass that's why I love them
I would choose this over a 911 if a manual were available.
And now give us this car with a 3.0L straight six (no turbo or blower) and without any other gimmicks (like electrical seats, ac etc.). Down to 1300kg it would be the real deal... It's a pity, that this will never happen.

6000 pounds for brakes!? I thought carbon-ceramics were supposed to be lightweight!? ;-)
Why does the new gen 911 have such a bad looking front end? :(
>6.3 engine can put out 700 hp
>sounds better
>they put a smaller less powerful engine in their "fastest" sportscar
>they write 45AMG on a 2 litre 4 cyl
R.I.P. real AMG company.
Compare this to a 911 carerra 2s or a Corvette C7
I would love to drifts this car
Good review. Comment by Ewan Hamilton
I Know Right! Reply by Sujeet Verma
Jesus Holy Shit Balls Christ I want one so badly, such a beautiful fucking machine....
TopGear audition?

Go for the cup...
Why not save 50k and buy a C63 coupe? Same engine and stats
C63 coupe doesn't run 0-60 in 3 seconds flat.
A few thenths worth 50k?
looks matter a lot
The C63 coupe is beautiful
This car handles significantly better than a C63, they share an engine and that's it. The engine isn't the only this that makes a car.
sleeker version of the jaguar coupe.
those wheels on the 911 look awful.
Super cool GT. Just can't dig the styling….
Take a shot evertime he says "sort of" and you'll be drunk until 2025
the only things you guys do is burn tyres this is a GT not a track car
People with Arachnophobia will probably hate the interior and won't go near this car haha.
A double dose of mad hair-mad eye pills today then Henry.
Just make a bonkers black series already...
Labs!
Uh, what did he say!! Lol 1:17
Could the intro be any more boring for such an exciting car???
As if it could possibly be faster than a 991 Turbo lol
prefer the F-type jaaaaag
Es mi coche
I dont know or i like the back of the car
sounds like m3 v8 !
