In today's video we are looking at the Mercedes AMG GT. Almost forgotten by some despite still being in production, this was the follow up to AMG's first in-house road car, the SLS.
Built on the same chassis ,but with a 4.0L Bi-Turbo V8 replacing the old NA unit, can the GT be better than the older car - which was a letdown.

You recorded the sound of the engine really well. It sounds nearly as good as the Maserati you drove a few months ago. Thank you for putting the effort in on the sound quality.

Test the GTC or GTR next. They are significant improvements over the already great GT/GTS: wider track, bigger turbos, revised gear ratios, dynamic engine and transmission mounts, more comfortable ride in C - for the GTC, and 4-wheel steering.

@@WickedRichie Absolutely it is. This was discussed by Mercedes when the GTC was launched. The GT and GTS have a harsher ride than the GTC (in Comfort). Mercedes makes updates like this during a production run.

Lack of feel from the steering, too harsh and crashy and scuttle shake like a 2002 CLK. For that reason my gen 1 R8 before it was better and my 996 turbo after it was twice the car!

What I never loved of the amg gt is the 143 versions of it, like Porsche does, that induces conversations like: was this the gt? Or the gtc, maybe the gts or the gtr? Wasnt there a gtr pro too? They are all fast and look very similar, I know they are very different but the halo car for me should be simple, self explanatory.

I have a used C207 E500 Coupe, and have the exact same rattle you have recorded, it sounds like a tiny buzz/crackle that is coming out from speakers, but it is surely coming from the dash when the car is moving and chassis is flexing. It is acceptable in a C207 but definitely not in an AMG GT of any sorts. I just let it be because I'm afraid trying to fix it will open up a can of worms with endless attempts at trying to fix other things.

Then real life kicks in and I look at it through the lens of crowded roads, speed cameras, 70mph speed limits and do find myself wondering what the point of it is?
I have this simple test called the Tesco test, could you go shopping, park it up go shopping and come back hours later and this car would terrify me.
I had an old Boxster S a few years back and leaving that around places was bad enough so what would I do with this? Get in it drive around a bit then drive home and park it up again, just seems kinda pointless

I had a 2016 GT S and had the rattle too and Merc fixed it by doing something with that screen. It never came back after. However, it developed serious issue with Command system over my ownership period. The screen goes dead sometimes..... Merc replaced the computer after a few tries, including a new screen. However, the same issue persist so I sold it soon after warranty expired. My mate had similar issue with his Command system with his C63 too! I found the screen goes dead whenever you switched to AMG mode on screen and only a restart of the car MIGHT bring the screen back but then happen again if switch to AMG mode again.

  • @RzogL
    @RzogL Před 2 lety

I was never convinced about the looks of the car, although I do prefer the C-pillar treatment to that on the SLS. In fact the whole back end looks much nicer and is more evocative of the classic 300SL coupe. If only they'd done something different with the headlights, maybe kept the SLS front end, this would have been a truly beautiful car. I read somewhere that the front bonnet is actually carried forward from the SLS. It would have been nice to retain the gullwing doors too, though I guess they don't make sense in the context of a 911 rival you can daily drive, whereas they did on the Gallardo-rivalling SLS. Still, this looks more compact and sports-car like, and I can believe it drives much better than an awkward supercar/GT. I remember it beat the 991 in comparative tests when it came out, so it's definitely not a bad car.

to me, the SLS was a competitor to the Bently continental/ Aston martin vanquish/ etc competitor. a grand tourer rather than the GT S which tries to compete against modern Porsche gt3's/ Bmw M cars/ etc

I’ve got a modified GTS and I’ve liked it so much after other cars that I’ve had that I’m keeping it and just Doing my personality type thing on it. It’s been a fantastic car, super reliable and very fast “if you tune it”. A good tune will wake the car up big time. The suspension is unbelievable as far as how hard you can push it on the track.

    A couple of critiques...
The car - why do manufacturers think that an "S" demarcation is really justified by a mere 5% bump in power and 10% in torque?
The review - Aston get the previous gen infotainment so I double a 6 year old Merc is the same as the latest Aston as you say.
Did you mean, "I thought they'd put all their build issues behind them" *by this stage (6y ago)* - or are you comparing this to the latest Mercs?
    Minor one - that's not a roll-hoop, it's a racing harness bar.

That rattle would drive me insane. Mercedes quality is still not anywhere near where it used to be. Used to have a GLC and it rattled too. Just pushing the buttons on the dash and centre console it would squeak and rattle.

I would also agree with all your comments about AMG GT S. I had big issue with its parts bin steering wheel. Steering is too big for a sportscar so I could not keep my hands at 3-9 oclock in tight turns so I had to turn the wheel old fashioned way, then I lost track with gear paddles :-( Steering is too light and does not self centre like other cars. No feedback of front tyres unless on track as heavy braking helps with weight transfer so I can feel the front tyres more. Fantastic engine, beautiful interior and head turning look though. I now own a Porsche Cayman GTS 4.0 manual in my search for old school driving fun. GTS 4.0 is close to my nirvana but I am quite disappointed with steering as well contrary to what other reviewers's claim of Porsche steering feel. Who still does hydraulic steering, N/A engine and manual gearbox these days apart from Gordon Murray's T50?

@@faraz2498 true but I disagree with the way auto industry went about things in last decade. I found forced induction engines do not save fuel at all compared to naturally aspirated engines. Real world consumption of turbo engine is so similar to NA engine with similar power. I have never ever achieved what manufacturers claimed. And I do not see the point of electrically assisted steering in sports cars because it’s claimed fuel saving is irrelevant in those cars! So we drivers lost so many emotional connections to our be-loved cars for NOTHING!

@@ehsu2099 in the end most people who buy these cars are not driving enthusiasts, they are rich posers who don’t care if a car has a hydraulic steering rack or if the pedals are spaced well to heel and toe etc. The car needs to be a flagship that helps sell the SUVs. They don’t even make much money off these cars . I doubt AMG on its own is profitable. But that does mean the enthusiast misses out. There is the Caterham of course, but hardly a DD.
