I’ve been following BirdTricks for a while now, and love their videos. I already have their seasonal “cookbooks” and can’t wait to use them, as well as the other goodies we’ve purchased from them. One thing people should know before buying a Sun Conure is that they can live for 30+ years so they are a HUGE commitment. I took in my Sun from a friend who no longer wanted him anymore after just a year and was shocked when I looked up their life span afterwards.
    I was like "What did I just get myself into?!" lol. But he's 16 years old now and we're still together and I hope for many more years with him. If you can make the commitment, it's a very rewarding experience but people should know this ahead of time. My only regret is not getting him a mate, but he's bonded with me so I guess i'm his mate haha.

    We bought a sun conure from a breather. My BF and I treated her like a daughter. We bought her 3 different cages, where we kept it open so she was free to fly around. We gave her only the best food and toys. She made the house happy and I loved her. Until last week when she just died. She dropped dead in front of our eyes in les then 30 seconds. I don't know what happended, she was only 11 months. We think a fatal heart attach. I just know that I'm devastered, and can't stop thinking and crying over her.

    When I bought my Sun Conure (Murp) from my cousin.... he flew over to me, bit me on the cheek, and flew back to his cage.
    Oh, and he did an evil laugh after biting me.
    He was a rescue. We're his 5th and final home. From what I'm told, he should be approaching 5 years old about now.
    I assume he had been abused because of how timid he was when interacting with him.
    Now, he's my buddy. Loves sitting on my shoulder and just hanging out. If I leave the room when he's out on his cage? He'll fly through the house looking for me. When I'm found he lands on my shoulder and stays there.
    We also got a Dusky Conure (Nibble) from the same cousin a year later.
    Murp and Nibble can be out together, but they do their own thing. They don't really interact. Both will explore the other's cage.🦜

It’s natural for them to want to be with you all the time. My son Conyers always want to land on me and rarely stay on their perches. I have to entice them with toys with goodies or yummy snacks that teach them the perch is a place they want to stay and spend time.

    How do the little nest tent looking fuzzies make them hormonal?
    Both of my Conures came with those, and that's where they sleep.
    I did take them out to wash them once and both birds seemed lost without the sleeping space they were used to.
    Both hang on the side of the cage all night.

    • @bestflockingfriends
      @bestflockingfriends  Před 3 lety +2

      The tents do make birds hormonal, because they imitate a nest which is a dark secluded space. My parrots also slept there, but I’ve provided a lot of perches and other spaces for them to be comfortable. They also provide a danger for ingesting the fibers, which cannot be digested. It’s up to you but I recommend against them.

      I don’t. You should be able to teach them to step for you without damaging incidents. Have you tried target training at all? Once you’ve determined which treat works best you can do step training in short intervals to show the bird your hand is not a negative thing.

    Hi, loved the videos. My Jenday conure, Zazu, he's 10, has become Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He is attacking my African Grey, Tillie, she's 13. It's testosterone. I know he thinks I am his mate and attacks her, flying at her, biting her. She screams the entire time they are flying around with me trying to catch them. I always get them both out and sometimes we don't have the chase. Longest we made it was 6 days. Tillie even tells him to stop it. I'm having to leave one in the cage and one out. Any suggestions? About a month ago I have started putting him to bed at 8:00 p.m. He hates the blanket. I'm retired so we do sleep in 8/9 a.m. Suggestions? Any suggestions as to how long we are going to be going through this? Thanks. Lisa

      I don’t know your daily habits so it’s hard to say. Some birds are just jealous of others! I have to keep mango my sun conure separate from Sam and Cookie bc he will fly and attack them. It could be hormones. It could be diet. 12 hours dark quiet sleep is important, and only pet your birds on their head and feet to avoid triggering more hormonal behavior.

He still doesn’t like being “pet” but he will cuddle... so long as I don’t touch him with my face too much 😂 side note, touching a bird anywhere besides their feet and head is sexual for them, so it maybe another way of the bird saying hey - no advances from you buddy! Don’t be hurt by it.

      Absolutely! Honestly I am not sure I’d have to ask the breeder of Peach. Mango, we adopted off Craigslist but actually I feel like she gave me paperwork on him. I’m not very well versed on the types of sun Conures, however the more time they spend outside that red turns into FIRE. If you have that ability to let your bird be outside or in the sun in a window I bet it’ll happen for yours too. And yes... very noisy. Be aware your actions can reinforce the loudness. Both BirdTricks and LamboandMango have great videos on this!

    I recently adopted a sun conure and I was getting pretty good with him / her . I have been feeding it the food I was told that was provided and I do try other foods that I was told it would like . But it doesn’t like anything I give it . So I just stay with what it’s been on and I do give treats like ormond s / peanuts . Some different fruits that he will try . I have never had a bird before so this is all so new to me . This is why I decided to watch some different videos about them . But I see on most birds they have something on there leg ( like a lil bracelet from being born and had been treated correctly. Is this true ? My conure does not have one and he does bite me when I try to get to him slowly to get the correct amount of time . I would love to have this beautiful bird with me all the time . But I can see that this is not going to happen. Yet . So I need to say that adopting a pet from a family that messed with him to much and the family had a child that is autistic and found out that he was taunted the bird . I don’t know how long that this child was doing it . So i made a choice to take in this beautiful bird . Now I can only have time with him / her when it wants the time . How do I know if this bird was brought from a pet store and not just a wild bird from who knows where . When he bites me he bits hard and make me bleed . Now there are times that he bits soft . I just have so many questions and m so dang sorry. 👍🙏

    • @bestflockingfriends
      @bestflockingfriends  Před 3 lety

      You’re just fine! It’s a lot to get a new bird. I thought mine “didn’t like” certain foods also but I was wrong :) it’s a learning curve! They will ALWAYS prefer the bad stuff because it’s so fatty and “tasty”. If you eliminate the seed diet and remove snacks like fruit and nuts they will be more likely to begin trying their new food like cold pressed pellets and a veggie chop. And no, a bird doesn’t need a leg band, they’re just like a dog’s tag on their collar: so if they get away someone is able to identify the bird and help find their owner. My parrots do not have leg bands.

      They're not typically loud when they can't see people. If you invest in good toys and you feed your bird a great diet, you're likely not going to have a lot of noise problems. When you get home, your bird will probably scream in excitement for a bit because they'd like to spend time with you. I think it's manageable, but you could also opt for a bird that's a bit less noisy.

Mine usually fly to a perch to use the bathroom or I can read their body language and see when they need to go. There’s usually some where I have baby gates they land on but that’s why I have perched around.

      @@bestflockingfriends That's great to know, thanks! I have been so into the idea of owning one but that situation worried me, I think it sounds manageable.

    Don’t they fly on the window , how do you avoid that .

      When we first got our birds they were all flighted but mostly not allowed to fly in their prior situations. This caused them to fly erratically into the walls, windows and door frames. It didn’t happen a lot, and over time they learned from their mistakes and became more accurate. It’s not the safest way I’m sure, but we did our best to introduce them slowly to new environments and today we have no problems with them flying into anything including windows.

    They do scream but it isn't really that bad. People make their screaming out to be intolerably painful or something and it isn't.

      I think it’s relative but I appreciate your feedback! Personally the screaming can be aggravating but it’s not all the time. Every situation is different.
