    This is super helpful! I am birdsitting right now for a friend's velcro bird who is even stickier than my bird. He's such a smart bird who has responded pretty quickly to the training we have done in other areas so far. I'm definitely going to try this with him. Otherwise, even though I love his company, it is hard for me to leave the room without having to lock his cage since he is a great flyer to boot and I prefer for him to have a larger play area while I'm not in the room rather than just be limited to his cage.

It’s favorite thing to do is follow me around the house while I travel from room to room. It’ll start flying as soon as I pass a door and kind of “hover” to give me a head start then will “station” on my shoulder when I get to the middle of the room)

    One thing I'd love to see someone try with a bird is stationing by training the release first. It sounds odd but Susan Garret does it with dogs where she reenforces lightly the station area but actually only builds the cue for leaving the station. If the dog leaves before the cue they get nothing but are lured back on the station. It builds the waiting and anticipation be cued from a station.

      @@bestflockingfriends I thought cage covers helped the birds sleep at night? I cover my birds cages so they can get 12-14 hours of sleep. They go right to sleep when their covers go on. This helps them NOT be hormonal. I totally understand the happy hut thing, but the cage cover thing makes zero sense

    • @sjusovare
      @sjusovare Před 2 lety

      @@doctoroclock7732 it does make sense, with a cover the cage becomes shielded from the environment like if it was the inside of a hollow tree, which encourages nesting behavior (not only with birds but also with arboricole mammals). In that respect, darkening the whole room helps them sleep as much, and does not have the same nesting effect as they can still see the whole environment outside of their cage.

    I've found that I have to go for give and take with my bird. Sometimes I am really busy at my job (home office), so I can't actually pay attention to her. She'll do anything to get my attention. Sometimes bad stuff, and never relenting. Eventually I found that if I just stopped and gave her four or five minutes of the attention she wanted (kisses, petting, clicking, tasting), then she would happily go off after that and amuse herself for about 20-30 minutes before she needed to check in again.

    Hi Bird Tricks! Loved the video, as usual, very useful stuff in there! I was just a little confused at the end, I've never heard that overnight cage covers can trigger hormonal episodes! I thought they were used in order to make it dark for birds so they get enough sleep and so that they DON'T get hormonal. It kind of makes sense since it makes the cage a big 'hide hut' essentially. But what are we supposed to do for the birds in order to get them enough rest? I put mine in a separate bedroom with a cover over their cage because it doesn't get 100% dark in that room with the lights off.

      Quoting a previous comment from Jamie:
      "cage cover issues stem from birds being covered yet action still happening around them so they’re still not receiving adequate sleep. They also make some birds nesty and territorial because they often chew on the cover (safety hazard as well as allowing them to make nesting material)
      Sleeper cages or separate rooms for sleeping usually do better for most birds.
      "

      Hannah thanks i was wondering the same thing because it wasn’t clarified in the video. I guess I’ll stop covering the bird cage. I took away the sleeper huts forever ago, try to make sure he gets 12 hrs of sleep, etc. even changed up the diet only thing left is the cage cover I suppose although a veterinarian suggested melatonin to decrease hormonal behavior Ill see how taking away the cage cover helps/not.

    On the other hand , my 8 months old sun conure , Ringo.
    I keep the door of his cage open for hours , and he will peek out , shake his head and then go inside.
    His door is open right now , since morning and I am waiting for him to come out...

    Can you put out a video on how to tame smaller birds like budgies? I have a baby budgie that I’m having trouble gaining his trust. He’s only just now letting me put my hands in his cage without freaking out and will eat millet if I offer a stick.

    • @MasterOshawott
      @MasterOshawott Před 4 lety

      I had trouble taming my baby budgie at first too. It was about a year before he fully gained my trust, now he acts almost exactly like the sun conure in this video. XD Though mine's a little better at listening when I ask him to step down however.
      That being said it sounds like you are on the right track if they are accepting food and not as scared. Just keep calm and be gentle with the little budgie.

    Thank fucking god for this video.
    My conure is new, and it’s definitely his most irritating habit. I love him so much, but he’s constantly wanting to be on my shoulder or my sisters shoulder, and he’s always chewing our jewellery or earrings or whatever her can get his little mouth on. Which is all fair and fine, but he throws little tantrums when he doesn’t get to chew on what he wants, or if something in the room startled him. And that turns into a heightened energy, and he won’t listen or step up after that point. And then just climbs all over you throwing a fit. And I need him to learn to get off of me when he’s feeling like that, and that he can’t CONSTANTLY be a part of eeeeverything I’m doing.

    Hi we have gotten an African grey off someone and probably isn't on the best diet we are going to try putting him with his normal diet with some pellets soon but I'm worried if he's been on this so long he won't take to it we have already tried him on some fruit and veg and he hasn't touched it is there anyway I can descise that he's eating pellets when I try to mix his normal diet as well? Also I was wondering with target training is it better to have disposable chopsticks or are reusable OK? Also I was wondering what would the best treat for him be when training when his old diet has a lot of sunflower seeds and seems to be reluctant to do anything? Also he only steps up when he wants or bites

    What was it about the covers etc that they were doing that was wrong? I cover Missy in her cage at bedtime and she has a tent like bed/thingo hanging on her tree, she's been in it and out and isn't phased by it. I just figured that if she felt like it was too noisy or whatever, she would find going in the tent a bit comforting to go in?

  • @S1ph3r
    @S1ph3r Před 3 lety

    so i was listening along and towards the end I heard "take the cage covers off". this wasn't specifically directed towards the birds when they sleep right? I thought they were suppose to be covered just at night when they sleep? We don't have a dedicated room so they are in the household at night,

    Loved this video and will be starting this training today with my male eclectus that will not stay off of me. I don't mind, but there's certain cases where I want him to be out of his cage without needing to be on me. I work from home and my green cheek stays out all day (unfortunately her wings are clipped, we got her that way) and I'd love for him to be able to be out as well while I work. My question though is about cage covers. What is the issue with using a cage cover? I might have missed it somewhere. I currently cover my birds at night because my office is in my living room and that's where I spend all of my time so my birds are there too.

Also I am very interested in getting a bird but what about the "poop" when they are on your shoulders, or flying about the house, can you train them to poop in just a certain area? also in a couple of videos you both talked about hormonal issues, Thank you!!

      judith weymark cage covers can increase hormone behaviors. Ideally, birds should have a cage that they can sleep in that is in a quiet, dark room for their 12 hours of sleep. It's better to have the room dark rather than just make the cage dark by throwing a cover on it.
