    As her next door neighbor, who has a dusky headed conure, I can agree they are loud. My dusky makes the same ear piercing squawk. And just like the Suns she can be sweet, cuddly and oh so cute, but then she can also be a loud vicious velociraptor. But I am so thankful for your birds because mine just loves listening to them and talking back!!!

    Everything you said is 100% true. I have one and her name is Rosie. They really do get attached and don't want to leave you. Every time I leave the room, Rosie will start calling out. If I am eating, she will want to eat my food. If I am drinking water, she wants to drink it too. She even mimics the sounds of eating and drinking. I give her lots of kisses and now she is mimicking them perfectly. They are very intelligent birds. Sometimes, my bird will regurgitate on me (eww), but that is how she expresses her affection. She loves to cuddle during a nap. I constantly ask her if she loves me and she will always shake her head yes. They are definitely loud. I can hear mine from outside (with a closed window). Sometimes she gets mad at my bunny if she gets too close. Sun conures are visually attractive with their bright colors. They are so full of personality. I may consider a second one.

    I love how honest you are in your video. While I TOTALLY agree that they are NOT apartment birds, I live in an apartment with Skittles. HOWEVER, my situation is very unique. I live alone, almost never have company (and when I do its usually less than 30 minutes, if that) and I'm disabled and home most of the time. My sun conure, Skittles, was potty trained by the lady at the pet store (which I did NOT know when I got him). But it was a wonderful surprise. He has a day cage in the living room and a sleep cage in the bedroom. He only goes in his day cage when I leave the apartment to run errands. Other than that he is out of the cage and with me.
    Everything you said is true, but it should also be noted they aren't just velcro birds but they can also become over-protective if not properly socialized. Because I live a rather reclusive lifestyle, Skittles cannot be exposed to others within the apartment or he'll attack them. He is so used to it being just he and I that he thinks anyone else is a 'danger'. I don't know enough people to be able to socialize with him and I like that its just him and I. He IS loud, but one thing I've learned is that he doesn't scream for no reason with me. He and I have a great communication system. Once I figure out what he wants/needs, he quiets down. He will land on the faucet and ruffle his feathers and sneeze if he wants a bath. He'll fly onto the fridge and wag his tongue if he wants juice. He'll fly over to his treat bag and smack it if he wants it.

      This is great! I made this more of a brutally honest video because I’ve never seen another video like it and I think it’s important SOMEONE says these things because we were so underprepared for what we encountered! And yes I’ve discussed noise in another video - that they’re screaming to communicate something. Thanks for all the pointers!

    Aww my sun conure has periods of loudness which you can hear him down the street, but he's pretty quiet and doesn't scream all day. Half the day he's quiet and keeps to himself and the other half he's screaming for food, if someone is at the door, or he screams to hang out with me. When we're together, he cuddles against my neck. He never screams while on my shoulder. Also he can stay quiet for about 4 hours after he takes a warm bath. I'm fortunate he's so chill now at 3 yrs old but when i first got him at 6 months, he screamed a lottt that first year and it took a lot of time to settle him down.

Ive owned 1 for 8yrs, i taught her at a young age if she wanted attention to make a certain noise...( clicking noise) she does that , BUT she screams when my daughter and i are talking, or im talking to anyone else. She screams when i am cleaning, she hates the broom, the vacuum, the mop!! She is however quiet most weekdays!! Im thankful for that! I love her..but be forwarned they are LOUD...im pretty sure its affected my hearing!! I lucked out because my 18 year old Sun is relatively quiet. My Quaker is the vocal one.
    Unfortunately my Sun was abused prior to adopting her. She has given me some pretty nasty bites which have left scars. The nastiest of bites occur in the spring. To me this has been the biggest con of living with a Sun Conure. They are a small bird but have a powerful beak.

    • @bestflockingfriends
      @bestflockingfriends  Před 4 lety +2

      Right!! So pretty but WOW such an unpleasant noise! No... Sam and Cookie don’t react - nor do they join in on the screaming. UNLESS it is because they are all reporting a “ danger” or threat they believe they’ve seen outside. That is something else!! We had already purchased peach but were waiting for her to grow and be weaned. We found Mango on Craigslist and impulse bought him. 😬 we naively thought they’d keep each other company. Thankfully they get along quite well now that they’re caged separately. They prefer me if we are both in the room.

    I am REALLY REALLY interested in getting a sun conure and you’re video has been so sobering, insightful and helpful. Yes, I know they’re LOUD but I personally don’t mind it. My concern is the bird overwhelming my family bc if their noise. In your experience, do you think they are loud ALL DAY or only PERIODICALLY loud when triggered?? I have heard that they can be trained to be quieter... what are your thoughts on this??

    • @bestflockingfriends
      @bestflockingfriends  Před 4 lety +4

      It’s true you can train just about anything into them with a lot of time and patience! Yes - the more people talking tends to get my bird’s going. However, they did become more quiet when we removed hormonal triggers!! (Cage covers, cuddle huts, and allowed 12 hours uninterrupted sleep in dark room). They are not loud all day - but they are loud a lot of it. They tend to scream as a basic form of communication, and it’s frequently in your ear or when you are just trying to call to someone to help you with something - which gets really frustrating!! I recommend other conures with quieter calls... the green cheek conure is what id say is close to a perfect pet bird.

      The sun conures scream more frequently and loudly (loud 8 on 10 scale). Macaws are much louder (10 on 10 scale of loudness) however they aren’t screaming as often as a sun conure. Macaws are happier hanging around you even if they aren’t on you. Suns tend to want to be your shoulder piece (or head, if you consider Peach haha).

      Yes, birds are typically a louder pet than most other animals. In my experience, Sun Conures are louder than other parrots. There are exceptions to that, especially depending on how a bird is kept. Hormones can tend to make your bird a lot louder also. It doesn’t have to be a Sun Conure to be loud, my macaw is very loud too. I watched many videos before getting a Sun Conure and no one expressed specifically how loud they were, just that they can be noisy.

    Mine is 12 weeks old and he is very stubborn and don't want to bond! He wants to fly around!! I cut his wings 3x he still Flys so now he is just coming up short in his destination that just makes my life harder lol!! He is loud when he wants to be loud but most the time he dont say much. And I have green cheek experience, cockatoo, cockateil, lovebird, parakeet, African grey, and now sun conures!!. Best birds for say pets and maybe service animals i would say green cheek or parakeet. But back to my bird im feeling he will never tame down. I take him out daily for hours and he spends most of his time on his cage!! He likes to fly on our heads and I also get alot wing smacks in the face by him!! Rude!! Lol!!. They hurt!!.

      @@bestflockingfriends i have other animals and I dont want him to fly at all!. But we are working on potty training and step up and all he does is eat all day and all night. Couple hours a day with me is good, but he is a male and stubborn none the less. And there is no training a bird who won't stay with you. He Flys constantly, taming him, and bonding with him are 2 different things!!. He is tame he is just refusing to bond or become a pet thats handled. He just ain't broke yet. Its gonna take alot of time. And him flying could put him in danger I prefer no flying till he is broke. And by tame I mean he will fly to us but he dont like hands, fingers, he sqwacks like dont touch me lol. He only bites if I hold him down or put his flight suit on he dont like that. But he is stubborn all my other birds would be broke by now but it is what it is lol.

    Do you have tips on how to help with a jealous Sun Conure? My dads Sun Conure is very jealous even when spending time with her, If we were to take our attention off her for one second she would attack us or whoever she jealous of. She’s attacked my cat (who wants nothing to do with the Sun Conure) visitors in the house and us that live in the house.

      Ah unfortunately jealousy is very difficult to overcome! Mango is very jealous and is horribly mean to Sam and Cookie. I am aware that reacting to the appropriate behaviors is what will reinforce positive vs negative reactions. You could try doing some target training where calm and quiet is rewarded. A lot of that type of behavior stems from hormones also... I don’t know this birds circumstances (diet, sleep habits)...

      Yes that was me! Velcro birds 🤣 we had a consult with Jamie and Dave in December 2019. No, sun conures are loud regardless if you have 1 or 10. Just because Peach screams doesn’t mean Mango does also. Thank you for the compliment! Do you have other birds? I recommend against getting a sun conure for your first bird typically because they’re very screamy. Green cheek might be more suitable! Or pineapple Conure!

      @@bestflockingfriends a sun conure would be my first bird, but I have done so much research about them over the past year, and I am getting my family mentally ready for how loud they will be. My family is also pretty loud too, and are used to the screaming and crying of toddlers going on all day. I also go to high school, so i will be giving it a pretty big cage I already picked out, as well as giving it music to listen too (we have tons of Alexa's) and foraging and shredding toys to entertain it while I am at school. That is so cool that you consulted with jamie and dave, i really look up to them, and watching them made me want to free flight my bird and make my own aviary in the future!!!!!

    • @bestflockingfriends
      @bestflockingfriends  Před 4 lety +1

      They don’t typically sit in their cages and scream so long as they’re kept busy. When you set a standard, they rely on that! Meaning if you ALWAYS take them out of their cage every morning to feed them, they will scream if you don’t. So, change it up and don’t always take them out first thing! It’s hard not to do because as babies they’re so cute and fun!

    Hi Arabian summer season heat adjustable for sun conures

    • @bestflockingfriends
      @bestflockingfriends  Před 4 lety +1

      I personally have no issues with my birds outside during our hot/humid summer climate. Sun Conures are from this type of climate and it is natural for them to adjust to hot days. I’d ensure they have ample water and shade. No animal should be caged in 100% sunlight in hot conditions. Monitor for heat exhaustion also. They will pant with their beaks open and act lethargic. I’d limit outdoor activity over 95 degrees in a very dry climate and offer cold fresh water for bathing and cooling.

    • @bestflockingfriends
      @bestflockingfriends  Před 4 lety +2

      When you see them poop, give them command you want to pair with the action and give a reward. If your bird is on an all seed diet it is hard to train tricks and potty train. This takes lots of time watching for their poop body language and catching the moment it happens. I always put my birds down frequently on their perch and try to get them to “poop”. I know people who have used “spot” as their poop command.

      He can poop on command and sometimes he'll say poopoo if he needs to go. And he can hold it while he's laying next to me in bed but once I start walking around that's when he poops on me and I can't seem to train that out of him lol

    • @bestflockingfriends
      @bestflockingfriends  Před 4 lety

      That’s great! I would make a point to take your bird off your shoulder every 5 to 10 minutes to the spot you would like them to poop and request that they *poop* (use the command you’ve chosen). Be sure to reward IMMEDIATELY if they do! Btw that’s so cute he says poopoo 😂 eventually your bird will get the idea, but accidents may randomly happen!

    • @bestflockingfriends
      @bestflockingfriends  Před 4 lety

      @coralecomics you said he will hold it in bed but once you walk around he poops, make sure before he even gets on your shoulder or you go to the stand where he poops and allow him to do that before walking around. Does that make sense? Maybe you need a small stand in your room where he can do that. Mango refuses to go anywhere with me until he’s pooped once he comes out of his cage in the morning.
