  • this Kenwood KX-54 was sold by the 1000's in the mid 1980ies. it had one very common mechanical failure that happened to 99% of them , and if it hasnt happened yet it will
this transport was used in the :
    Kenwood KX-44
    Kenwood KX-54

    Kenwood KX-64W
    NAD 6240
    NAD 6140
Kenwood tape deck cassette deck repair servicing, changing belts, cleaning
and many others, so if you have one of these with this mechanical problem failure this is how to solve it
my name is Rene, from 1985 to 1999 I used to repair in and out of warranty cassette decks and walkmans for Kenwood, Yamaha , Pioneer, Sanyo and other brands and with the current increasing interest in analog audio, and cassette decks in particular, I started this channel to share tips and tricks that I have picked up over the years.
I will mostly do 'end-to-end' video's about repairing, servicing and adjusting the deck from beginning to end with a lot of talking , showing , tips etc and very little editing.
If you have any questions or particular video's you would like to see just reach out and maybe I can assist ?

I was bought a Technics by my Papa in New Zealand when I was 13yrs old - 1978. The first with a flouro meter and soft touch eject available then, I think. Next was a Nakamichi in 1992 (thereabouts) - with analogue meters. Just this year (at 59 yrs of age) bought a Sony 3 head - because I could never afford 3 heads before - I love it! I've built my own kit amps over the years, but have never attempted pulling apart a cassette deck transport. - until now. You inspire me to do so!!

congrats on the 59th !! were the same age ;-)
those technics and nakamichi's are pretty cool , i have a nakamichi on the workbench soon , as soon as i have the belt kit we'll start working on that one (and record it)
when you pull a transport apart make sure you take loads of pics so see where everything goes. and dont take too long putting it back together as you will forget where everything went ! i am sure you do great

Wow, happy to find this channel, excited to see how it develops. With your experience in the field I think a video highlighting the specific techniques used to test these players would be great. I know you are using them throughout these videos, but I am sure a shorter video focused on specific calibration tests you use would be fascinating in themselves and maybe even more digestible for someone who is looking to repair their own device! Great job again!

Thanks Max ! If there is any interest I can certainly make a few shorter video’s on how to calibrate a deck ? Head azimuth, speed , record and play levels , bias levels etc ? I will pull out one of my 2 head decks and see when we can make a video

Very good job. I like those simple old decks and you do a great job repair them. I myself try sometimes to do some simple repairs as an amateur. I whould like to see you put out some shorter videos on specific adjustments.Thank you!

@@cassettedeckandwalkmanre-mw1hy No worries. My original comment was going to be, this was my childhood Cassette Deck, passed on to me by my dad in 1990. I recorded everything on that deck...even produced a few clips that ended up in major market commercial radio ads. I was an aspirating producer/engineer & creator in my teen years.
I know the issues of this machine well. I never knew until now that this model sold all that well because in all the years gone by, with so many machines going through my hands, I never encountered another example of a Kenwood KX-54. Odd, now that I think about it. Anyways, this video triggered lots of fond memories and always interesting to watch how to repair these things. :)

Good video squire, I think I bought a Memorex Twin Cassette Deck off eBay last year or the year before & the Seller threw in a Kenwood Single Cassette Deck (Not sure which model to be honest), I know both the Memorex & Kenwood Decks need the Belts replacing according to the Seller but I think I paid about £20 for both which included shipping, I still haven’t got around to opening the Box yet to have a look, I’m saying nothing! My main Deck at the moment is a Yamaha KX-400 although I do have a KX-580 which I’m currently looking at, It was sounding muffled after a couple of seconds of Playback and I’ve adjusted the Azimuth so it now sounds muffled for a couple of seconds and then it’s alright after that, Any suggestions?

      There’s 2 Yamaha k-540s on the workbench , with a kx-1200 and a kx-630 shortly after that 😉 maybe that helps ?
      I really like the Yamaha’s !
If you look up the Kenwood model surely we can figure out what’s going on with it

@@cassettedeckandwalkmanre-mw1hy Cheers for that & I’ll look out for those, If I get chance then I would like to look out for a Nakamichi & possibly a Teac & Denon as I believe they all make good Decks too!

It's cool to see that this technology still works today and that it was built to last. I'm in the market to buy my first cassette deck and I was wondering if you had any suggestions?

    • @cassettedeckandwalkmanre-mw1hy
      @cassettedeckandwalkmanre-mw1hy  Před měsícem +2

Thank you ! , as long as it’s used these decks will last a long time , I hope that these ‘howto’ videos sharing a little knowledge will keep them going longer
My own ‘goto’ simple deck is still the Yamaha k-540 / kx-500 , easy to maintain and good enough specs for the average user , if you want a little more look for a Yamaha 3 head deck , some have specs better than the nakamichi’s but don’t cost as much

Ready to buy your first deck..like everything..there will always be something better or cheaper than what you choose..you'll see it later..like we all do..we all have different expectations and experiences..I'm old now..I got my first deck in a combination system in the 70's..could I have got better value back then..maybe not..I saved and narrowed it down to 3 and went for the middle system..and it served me well..for over half a decade..I've had separates since then..these older units have now been around since the 90's or more..so belt changing is standard now..if it hasn't been done in years..in my 60's nowadays I have 3 decks..the best of them is the single deck Technics RS-B10..similar to the RS-B100..the Kenwood twin transport mechanisms are not silent..one is slightly more audible till music plays..you might find that with some..try to listen before you buy..run a tape with volume on zero..lots more tips would take a paragraph..good luck
