OSP actually did Frankenstein. Also werewolfs, Jekyll and Hyde, and Edgar Allan Poe.
Man, the Werewolf one was so good.
Loved how in-depth it was.
Don't think you noticed, but Grettir's half-brother avenged him in CONSTANTINOPLE. He chased those that wronged him to Rome 2.0 to get revenge, what a lad
Damn! All across Europe!
Damn. Lotta devotion to a guy who was basically a menace to humanity as a whole.
Like people in the comments pointed out, Glam's curse sounds like a description of PTSD.
And the curse that killed him was most likely infection, which would have made him feel like his strength was actually slipping away.
I'm 90% sure that the original video actually talks about the PTSD in a mid credits thing.
So the saga of Grettir started as a record of a possible sociopath that developed ptsd before embellished overtime, cool
@@kiritotheabridgedgod4178no it didn’t, I checked and the mid credits was about Icelandic saga pacing
Grettir is the personification of _task failed successfully._
I feel like for someone like Grettir dying outside of battle would be very degrading. He didn’t get to do die as he lived, he just sort of withered away. That’s pretty grim for a ghost punching warrior.
He probably did get a laugh out of screwing his killers over out of their money, though.
I can’t wait until Airer reacts to the “A Stranger in a Strange Land” one, our man is going to lose his mind
Oh yeah, this will be a sight to behold
Yeah. I keep rewatching it, and I still don't really get it. 8/
Can't wait for "Deep Thoughts with Einlein"
@@jpfg2713 you missed the H its Heinlein
@@Archon3960 I've actually read the book, several times...and I still don't get some of it. :)
29:43 It says GET FUKED (there is no equivalent for C in Elder Futhark runes)(Red is using Elder Futhark here, Younger Futhark would probably be more in holding to the time period of the story, but it has fewer runes, and some of the ones she is using here are missing in Younger Futhark)
The thing about murder in Norse culture at this time is that if you killed someone and immediately owned up to it, you just had to pay wergild and you were free to go. But if you tried to hide it, you could get outlawed.
First note, guess I'll edit as it goes: that word that looked like "alping", that middle letter is a thorn, so it's more "althing".
It used to be the first letter of "the", but typesetters didn't want even more letters to keep track of and decided "eh, y looks close enough".
And now we have the "ye olde" thing.
Most of the more well known Sagas are excepts that are more focused on a particular individuals life while the Saga proper extends several generations in either direction. Also, Iceland was settled by the Norse, and modern Icelandic is actually pretty close to Old Norse.
Bounty on Grettir - was 9 Merkur of silver (about 5lb, 2.2kg), which was the highest in Icelandic history at the point it was set. Given this is a bit less than $2000 US in current value, it is not the highest bounty in all history, not by a long shot.
It seems Grettir was a trained guy with mental issues that got worse with age.
Werguilds were more a way to bow out of a conflict. Normally those who actually won the conflict don't need to pay them because...well... they won. Sometimes, like in this case, it can be paid to avoid hostility from powerful allies of the person/group who's ass you kicked, but generally, if you don't mind the grudge? No need to pay to clean the slate.
Of the OSP Halloween videos, Dracula and Frankenstein are my favorites. Red does a lot of history in her Werewolf vid, though, which is cool. Blue's piece on failed assassins is also really good. You can't go too far wrong with OSP.
I love the Van Hellsing serious face but lol
Not the horses
“I sleep”
And the food
*“R E A L S H I T”*
Actually, it's entirely possible this *is* the "original version" as the story's set shortly after Iceland was Christianized. Some wannabe monster-slayer talking smack about the Capital-G and this not going over so great could easily have happened.
Also, a good chunk of *most* sagas are legal battles. The Norse *really* liked courtroom drama, apparently.
I like how Ilugi pulled a Benkei on behalf of his brother, holding the line until he died of a cause that his enemies didn't want him to die of.
Always fun to find an old example of what tvtropes calls a "Deconstruction."
This is the reason why Phoenix Wright always asked you serious questions
25:00 oh! just got A Thought.
What if the real reason he went back to the danger, is that the safe but boring life caused his to fixate on his curse MORE?
Think about it, when you're too busy killing stuff to think about your problems, they can't make you too anxious, at least not conciously. but if you don't have much else to think about, say if you've spent your entire life fighting and then you have no one to fight for a while, then what else are you gonna focus on but the larger existential/cursed issues?
If I'm correct he left, not just cause he was bored, but because that boredom made the memories of the curse worse to his mind.
She already did Frankenstein. I think it was the year before but I could be wrong.
This is the story of the oldest recording of an E4
I believe they actually do have master playlists on their channel of “Red’s stuff” and “Blue’s stuff”. Convenient, huh?
😯👍
1:50 so... Iceland is a former colony of Denmark/Norway (Founded by Denmark, passed to Norway after the Kalmar Union exploded, became Denmark's again when Demark-Norway was a thing, then was Denmark's alone afterwards, then World War 2 happened and Iceland was independent after some very complicated talks with the UK and Denmark, give or take a lot of important details) so the Norse pantheon's presence there shouldn't be too surprising. Well at least until Scandinavia was Christianized and then worshipping other gods wasn't cool anymore. Then the stick came out and Iceland was "persuaded" to become Christian. Also, for reference, Scandinavia geographically (and culturally in a number of ways) makes up Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and depending on the person you are asking: Estonia.
History nerd moment over.
😯👍
@ryttyr14 I am aware, but I was speaking in relation to history. Many Nordic nations were part of Scandinavia due to historical events.
Huh, somehow I missed this one while watching the entire back-catalog over the last couple years...
And Grettir is a straight-up murderhobo.
Off topic, LESS THEN TWO HOURS TO GO UNTIL THE HUNCHBACK TALK DROPS!!!
Also, you may want to check out Tex's other talks. They are mostly Shorts with two sub two minute entries in their Videos section, but you may well enjoy Tex Talks Poetry...
Shit, that's today? Feels like my birthday is early this year!
25:33 those are Groucho Marx glasses. He was a famous old time comedian known for his cigar, his nose, glasses and eyebrows used in those novelty glasses and the way he talked. P.S at 25:58 I think you did a pretty good impression of his voice/accent there.😄
I'm sorry, did you only realize he was a protagonist after he was lazy instead of... you know... him being the main character that the story focuses on?
Well, there's protagonist and there's *protagonist.* Grettir checks most of the boxes for "classic folktale protagonist."
He is not a normal protagonist he is an rpg protagonist.
Must be the curse...
She meant the current change in climate.
Next Frankenstein!! Next Frankenstein!! After it Jekyll and Hyde. Please, please please 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Literal. Murderhobo.
2:33 LOL and, Uh Oh and, now that the cat is out of the bag can we please hear that story.😂😂
Thulu is eldrich thats where it came from
I'd love to see you react to OSP going over the Epic of Gilgamesh
Oh my god, I love this guy! Best Nordic character so far! xD
Wait, is that the thorfinn from Vinland saga?
Thorfinn "Karlsefni", Leif Erickson, Askeladd, Thorkell the Tall, Canute, and many, many more in Vinland Saga are figures from historical sagas, folklore, or general historical note, so quite likely, yes.
@@Plotatothewondercat Ah, I did know that thorkell was real but not the others. Thank you
Ok, so the newest Tex Talks Battletech premiered today (The Hunchback). You were the last mention in the credits (I think so at least, the name was mispelled), they also brought up your pausing habit.
In a way Grettyr got the last laugh because of the name of the story.
Epic of Gilgamesh!!!!!
Well we know what's @Airier next D&D character is going to be lol.
😁😎
I think this story, could be nowadays be used to describe the Influencer problem...
Someone get's popular through the internet, they start doing more and more crazy shit to stay popular and keep the focus of attention and it ends with them falling back into the unknown sometimes with their attempts getting back on top failing because of illegal activities and such...
As an artist i can tell you i thought the jttw videos would take forever 😔 i might be wrong but im pretty sure red is the only one drawing so it’s pretty impressive she can get those out while drawing for all the other videos too.
:) Thanks for this reaction.
I love cold weather ❤❤❤
Its pasicly a family dairy 😅
Nice episode.
I haven’t seen any new journey to the west in a long time. I’m not sure they’re doing any more.
Those take a long ass time to make though. Pretty sure there was a year difference between the last one and the one before that
@@EG-hy9mv yes but I think it’s been well over a year, it might even have been two years. But, personally, I didn’t care for the story, even Red’s highly entertaining version.
@@nelleneulmer5385 "Over a year"? _Journey to the West (Part X)_ came out 8 months ago, _Part IX_ came out a year and a half ago. Go back two years, you're looking at *_Part VIII._* It's an OSP tradition for the past seven years to release one episode annually, usually in November-December.
@@emperordaniel9595 oh, okay. I’m not following it so I may have just forgotten.
