      Yeah. As of the Iliad, Achilles didn't have the whole heel vulnerability thing, IIRC, but rather a prophesy: if he fought at Troy he would die gloriously and be remembered forever or, if he didn't fight, he would have a long life but die in obscurity. The heel thing was a later addition to the Achilles myth.

    14:00 there's evidence that the Gorgons, Medusa included, started out as deities of a culture that the Greeks conquered/absorbed, and the myth was designed specifically to demonize the no-longer-worshiped deities so the Greek's own gods would be worshiped instead. Thus her name on the story.

    Just a note, but Snow White wasn't ever abandoned to the dwarves or even abandoned at all, she was explicitly sent out to be murdered by the hunter. The hunter then got cold feet and told her to just run away. The evil queen very much had a plan to off her and not leaving it to the chance of the wilds, she even made the hunter bring back a heart to prove he had done the deed so that she wouldn't be left hoping for Snow White's eventual death. The hunter just used a pig's heart instead to trick her.

    The missing details in Bellerophon (according to Wikipedia):
    When Bellerophon returned victorious to King Iobates, the king was unwilling to believe his story. A series of daunting quests ensued: Bellerophon was sent against the warlike the Amazons, who fought like men, whom Bellerophon vanquished by dropping boulders from his winged horse; which - in some Narratives, is preceded by Bellerophon facing off the Solymi.
    When he was sent against a Carian pirate, Cheirmarrhus, they tried to ambush him, but failed when Bellerophon killed everyone sent to assassinate him. The palace guards then were sent against him, but Bellerophon called upon his father Poseidon, who flooded the plain of Xanthus behind Bellerophon as he approached. To defend themselves, the palace women rushed from the gates with their robes lifted high to expose themselves. Unwilling to confront them while they were undressed, Bellerophon withdrew.

    8:28 there is also evidence that Medusa was never beautiful to begin with but one of three gorgon sisters who were born ugly. Her being magically made ugly after being attacked (i’m using this word instead of one of two other words for CZcams reasons) by Poseidon was a more modern interpretation. I believe Red goes into that in a later myth and says something along the lines of “Athena either did her a solid by making her so ugly no man would do something like that to her again (in the picture I believe she writes something like “they can’t attack you if they can’t look at you”) or if she was wrongfully punished so hard that her face tuned inside out.”

    Greek Mythology is always fun because we see how the stories changed over time, from the old Greek ideas, to Roman, to Catholic, all these religions saw them different, and changed the tone of a lot of stuff, even the modern day changed things, as we often dislike seeing the hero hurt, so we often sand off the bad parts, we also love some monsters, so we change how we see them. we forget half the lesion as no one in the story learnt that one. this all happening because Greek myths are some of the most well preserved.

      I think nothing shows the evolutiuon of that stuff better than anything relating to Hades. The ancients Greeks both respected and feared him. Romans had more positive outlook, due to sycretizing him with some other gods. Later he became more and more "the evil one" and in recent times there has been a counter to that villainization with depicting him as "the chill dude" to the point that many pointed out this super positive view of him often means one of the most famous stories with him gets reinterpret in a way that could be taken as romanticization of the forced marriage...

    Ironically, Chrysaor just recently got a bigger role in FGO as well... by way of Medusa using his sword while in the Saber-class. He(?) already seemed to have made an appearence before, I think it was on Gorgons Bond-CE, where were shown the remnants of the Gorgons body after she was slain, with a golden egg in the middle, housing a sillhouette that resembles Stheno and Euryale. Theories range from that just being how he looks, to him being a rebirth of Stheno and Euryale and that Gorgon didn't completely absorb them, since Medusa already had the Pegasus as well before she ate him in Fate-lore, but he still jumped out of her neck as well. Anyways, as for Saber Medusa, she basically hones all in on her aspect as Chrysaors mother, treating the golden sword as if it was her child, while also focusing on her aspect as monster mother, since appearently some myths also describe Chrysaor as the father of monsters, I think due to him being the father of Echidna, who is basically THE mother of monsters in Greek myth, making Medusa basically the great-grandmother of monsters according to that interpretation. Of course, that somewhat conflicts with the role of Echidna and Typhon themself, since their place in Greek myth is typically sorted BEFORE Medusa chronologically, but at the same time, putting a chronology on Greek myth outside of the Argonauts and the Trojan war seems like a futile endeavour for the most part in the first place, and while there's a "popular" way to tell Greek myth, there's a bunch of different alternate versions for most myths anyways. Regardless, that's how we got a Saber Medusa in FGO using a golden sword and also summoning images of Greek monsters like the Cerberus or Scylla to help her in battle, while also hijacking parts of Athenas power for herself.

And since I'm a nerd of Mythology and History as much as I am one of gaming and media literacy, I can further expand context. Then again, you're probably gonna curse my name by the end of this.
    - The thing about the Grey Sisters and that eye they share is a very freaky thing. The Graeae, as they are known, are a trio of hags with unnatural visages. Their skin grey like an overcast afternoon, their bodies built like geese with gangly long arms and long thick necks that droop downward. And between the three of them, they share one eye to see with and one tooth to eat with, placing them in their faces or mouths and then ripping them out to pass to the next sister; all of which draped within an ashen-colored curtain of long greasy hair. And yeah, Perseus kinda had to hold that eyeball hostage (well, THAT'S a sentence) because they were being stubborn, avoidant and generally unhelpful. Pretty typical for crotchety abhuman creatures that collectively possess all worldly knowledge.
    - The "Epic Medusa Fight" thing probably started back in the 50's with the creation of Clash of the Titans. Which make sense since most idiots still think the Kraken is Greek and not Norse because Ray Harryhausen made the Kraken into the sea monster that was going to eat Andromeda. But, the reason he avoids the fight directly is because Medusa's sisters, Stheno and Euriale, are immortal and more than a capable fighting force. So yeah, no messing with lil' Medusa unless you want her big sisters to rip out your asophagus.
    - While true that Minos imprisoned Daedalus and Icarus were imprisoned to keep the Labyrinth's escape directions secret, *that's not the ONLY reason.* See, after a bunch of egotistical bs with Monis flaunting the extremely beautiful Cretan Bull as his own instead of sacrificing it, Poseidon cursed his wife to become enamored with said Bull. Thankfully, the Bull wasn't going for it because... well, human. Bull. Tou get the picture. Anyways, she devised a method by which she'd get the bull's attention, _AND GUESS WHO SHE GOT TO BUILD IT!_ You'd also ask why didn't Daedalus turn it down and the answer is thus: "Professionals Have Standards." That, and outright refusing a queen is likely to get you arrested or beheaded back in those days. That, and lots of gold.
    - I'll admit that Pygmalion is a weiner for being kind of an ass with his decisions, but he tended not to like the women of his city because most of them were prostitutes. And a lot of guys tend to not want to drink from the same bottle that other dudes drank from. And if I remember the story correctly, he actually was very happy when Galatea came to life.
    I would add something about Bellerophon, but I got nothing; it's been a hot minute since then. Plus, you'd probably want me to stop after mentioning the part where a queen got a bad hankering for beef.

    The best variation of Chrysaor I've ever seen was the Percy Jackson book series where he became a pirate. (Son of Poseidon and a monster)

  • @jaredgreen2363
    @jaredgreen2363 Před rokem +1

    Say didnt Rick riordan write into the Percy Jackson books that Daedalus tried to kill Icarus because he was slightly smarter? Also there is a version where pygmalion was commissioned to make a statue of Aphrodite after which he was supposed to actually look for a mate, and he postponed as much as he could but couldn’t, then asked for it to be brought to life.

    • @RenaDeles
      @RenaDeles Před 8 měsíci

      He didn't kill his son out of jealousy in that series, Icarus still died from ignoring his dad's warning about flying too high. He *did* murder his nephew for how smart that kid is on top of a lot of poor choices of conversation topics by said nephew in relation to Icarus' death. (where in myth said nephew is normally yeeted before Icarus dies.)

      @Talyrion Před rokem +1

      I'm pretty sure only the later "Clash of the Titans" movie decided to make it the kraken - a creature that comes from Scandinavian myths. As far as I know, the sea monster Perseus defeats never got a name in Greek mythology.

    Snow White was supposed to be murdered by the Hunter who couldn’t bring himself to do it so he told her the queen wanted her dead so she would not go back to the palace and he killed a boar instead to put its heart in the box that he was supposed to put Snow White’s heart in. He was hoping she would live not hoping for her to die.

    I’m sorry but this is getting on my nerves. THE NAME IS HERACLES, he was named after the glory of Hera in an ineffective bid to not delete (using this instead of another word) him. HERCULES IS HIS ROMAN NAME. It is explained in their Heracles video.

    In Percy Jackson and the Olympians Percy is named after Perseus because Sally says he is the ONLY Greek hero to have a happy ending.
