This conversation feels like starting a game of Stellaris, finding an abandoned Megastructure right away and then having an event chain basically saying that the builders got Crisised. You are at the bottom of the tech tree, the people who built this were so high up you can't even see them and they failed to stop what came for them... And whatever came for them, is still out there.

The best part of this whole scene IMO is the look of horror at 1:13 where the sheer scale of the threat dawns on Ashford. This alien civilization was powerful enough to create its own dimensional pocket, connect thousands of solar systems through self-constructing wormhole gates and bend the laws of reality at will... and even they couldn't stop this terrifying alien _thing_ from killing every single one of them. What's worse, whatever it is is probably still out there.

@@nationalsocialism3504 Given your username, this probably falls on deaf ears, but Laconia's rationalism nearly destroyed humanity. The Goths were willing to allow a certain level of use of the ring gates, if we kept below that they'd leave us alone. Duarte wouldn't accept that, couldn't accept the possibility that a peace agreement had already been reached, deciding that war was inevitable so now was a good a time as any to start it. He tried to teach the Goths not to mess with us by bombing them when they sent a ship Dutchman, never realising that ships going Dutchman was the Goths trying to teach _us_ not to mess with them. He missed an incredibly obvious issue with his plan and Laconia went along with it because Duarte is always right.
If you're an insect, and a human is in the room with you, the most logical course of action is to _leave them alone._ They could wipe you out in ways you can't fathom, and all you can do is give them ineffective little bites that will only annoy them. Leave them the hell alone.

He took a situation that had been stable for over 30 years, made it worse, and then tried to sentence our entire species to a fate worse than death to escape death.

you never know. small life can stow-away on ships, perhaps some ants made it off earth and have colonies in the asteroids that they have inhabited. kinda like the tree gardens on ceres, or the butterfly on ganymede. They probably actually intentionally brought insects with them, so those areas could maintain healthy biodiversity as insects do tend to play a part in keeping an ecosystem thriving.

We have analogies with Halo or Mass Effect, but there are significant differences. Much more realism and also much scarier.
There is no one else around. No galactic civilization. No Azarian, or Forerunners. This makes sense, the Fermi paradox holds. If there were other civilizations, we should have met them long ago. Surely long before the events depicter in The Expanse.
But there WAS someone around, a galactic civilization of a sort, about a billion years ago. They were sufficiently advanced to build a pocket universe (the region in which our heroes stand now). One of their probe can turn an asteroid into a reactionless spaceship. Disassemble a spaceship into bolts and nuts in a split second. Build a stable wormhole.
They disappeared, after a bitter and desperate fight, because someone else, that THEY could not even see, destroyed them, one stellar system at a time. And they NEVER resurfaced, in a billion year. Not anyone else, by the way.
Fermi paradox holds, if (in the fictional narrative) we are able to build generational spaceships, and one large galactic civilization was out one billion years ago, there would be thousands of civilizations, even millions, around. All them have been quenched, or wiped away, likely by this mysterious and all powerful enemy.
It is not a visible threat, like the Reapers. You have no chance with the PM builders just consider what happened to the Arborghast or to the Martian marine, but what you do to an enemy that just makes a stellar system to disappear, without anything visible causing that?.
It is not a plague, an infection, like the Flood. The protomolecule resembles the Flood in some sense, but it has a purpose, is not malevolent. It just consider us like insects. The ring is MADE of PM, but does not care us.
Holden is right. Hurry back home, and do not ever dream of meddling with these things, hoping they will never notice us.

I like how Ashford talks, its like kind of caring but also sarcastic, and there's weight behind his otherwise whimsy-sounding retorts.
And I particularly like the exchange around the anthills. Holden says the Protomolecule AI doesn't care about humans like how we don't care about anthills, Ashford doesn't understand and states this, then Holden says something that Ashford very much understands; killing and death. The audio cue at the moment Ashford realises the meaning is like hearing a titanic pin drop (at 1:13), as Ashford realises before Holden even verbalises it that what they are in is a graveyard. You can see it in his eyes.

LYRILL basically it goes like this (not really spoilers but yeah, it might be new info for some peeps)
The aliens made the protomolecule as a biological machine that uses biological matter to create rings that will link to the slow zone (the place with the nucleus in the middle). The protomolecule was sent across space - slowly because gates must be the only way the aliens found to cheat the speed of light - toward Sol system but Jupiter's mass deviated it from its course and it ended up on the moon Phoebe. It stayed there for a long time while biological life appeared on earth, the protomolecule being inert at a safe distance. In that time, the aliens were confronted by something. We dont know what exactly (you will see in season 4, maybe) but whatever it was, it could not be stopped. The aliens tried as best they could, destroying their own systems in a desperate attempt but it was not enough. They put the slow zone in a quarantine by shutting down all the rings to their empire and in millions of years, they never went back. They are most likely all dead.
Holden wants to leave for two reasons. 1: The nucleus feel threatened by the humans and might decide to purge Sol system if the humans keep messing around with weapons in the slow zone. 2: There is no proof that the ones who killed the aliens are gone and humanity has no hope of fighting them off.
      Hope that answered your questions!

The protomolecule is an automated road building tool. It was sent eons ago to build the ring, at conventional (much less than light) speed. It has no way to communicate with its creators, so it is not aware they are long gone. It does the job it was programmed to do and alas, there is nobody on the other side of the newly built road. Just an empty building with automatic responses.
Unfortunately one of these automatic responses seems to be "shoot at anything looking even vaguely dangerous".

Maybe some sort of Creator alien race or single alien that somehow created all others, thus inspiring the concept of gods overall. We interpret its behavior as malicious but it’s just as likely that it merely finds us aggravating. I like the anthill analogy because it applies not just to the Builders but to the Ring Entities as well.
Years ago I lived in a rented house in Florida that had a serious ant problem. We talked to the owner & he had the house tented & gassed the insects. I always got the sense that the Ring Entities didn’t regard the Builders or humans with malice per se. We’re just a great big swarm of annoying, biting insects to them. They don’t hate us. We just make them really uncomfortable. So they call The Orkin Man to tent the galaxy…

Hmm Interesting, I didn't get the sense that their civilization was gone at all :P
What I was getting from it all was that, Miller was being created in Holden's mind by the civilization so Holden would do something for them that they could not do. Because Miller even said he was the brain or something like that, and Holden was a tool (in that particular moment), with the ultimate objective of coming in and destroying the whole solar system (for whatever reasons that may be)

    • @GoranArsic76

      #MILD SPOILER#
Their civilization has gone, but their machines still work (proto molecule). Now those machines (what's left of them) are awakened by activities in our Solar System millennia's later and they are investigating what has happened to their creators.

    • @L8ugh1ngm8n1
      @L8ugh1ngm8n1 Před 6 lety +5

Think of the sphere as a great big automatic road building machine, and the protomolecule as the tarmac. The sphere sends out the protomolecule to make new roads. It does this by just consuming any and all resource until it is is able to create a ring. Once done the folk who created the sphere and PM can have themselves a new road. However as Holden alluded too something came along a started to kill the folk who made the sphere and PM. So to try and protect themselves they shut the ring space down, closed the access to all the gates and then started destroying entire solar systems to try and stop this new big bad.
Mean while the sphere has kept trying to phone home, to update what it's doing with it's creators however they have locked down the gates prevent it from doing that. Miller alludes to this with a statement about it reaching out, reaching out, it reaches out 113 times a second. He only says that line once in the show but in the book it is made much clearer that something big is going on as just about every chapter starts with with this line.
Miller is part of the machine, the sphere, the AI that controls it, however you want to describe it and it needs someone, a life form to come in and by pass the security so that it can report in and that's where Holden comes in. The Sphere uses a small globe of protomolecule that has been left on the Roci to create an interface that Holden can relate too, in this case Miller and then uses that to get Holden to reopen the gates.

Hahaha. Then you haven't read the Forerunner Trilogy. Because the last month of the Forerunner-Flood War was basically Lovecraftian. What we see in the Halo games is basically the end-result of the Halo Array Pulse lobotomizing the Flood.
The Flood in the Forerunner Trilogy is a COMPLETELY different beast.
Keyminds are what happens when Flood Biomass covers an entire planet like a multi-hundred kilometer thick fungal growth and all the Graveminds on-planet (billions of them) merge into a single super entity (basically a Zerg Overmind on steroids) -- with computation powers and command abilities to control Flood bioforms into combat based around actual fucking PRECOGNITION, and there were hundreds of millions of Keyminds near the war's end. Forerunner-Flood War Flood can create more Flood biomatter via Ex Nihilo processes (literally out of thin air) by raping physics. Can alter dimensional barriers to inhibit Slip Space travel. It can create areas of altered physics that support its own growth and the computational powers of Keyminds. War-Mode Flood is fucking insane.
More like author of the Expanse ripped of Greg Bear (author of the Forerunner Trilogy) to make his own Great Enemy.

      Outsider Spoilers:
Towards the end of the series there's a 20 year time jump ( Similar to earlier in the show where was a 3 month time jump ) During this time thousands of planets are colonized using the ring system, and the proto-molecule has been studied and used to make much more advanced technology. However, there are signs that the use of the proto-molecule technology may have begun to attract these unknown entities, with random ships starting to simply cease to exist when using the gate system. It's up in the air how the series will end. (Another reason for the 20 year gap is that earth needed time to be rebuilt. A mass extinction of life and a third of the people on Earth get killed in a future Belter-Earth-Mars war. Since the authors already killed some 10 billion people, its possible everyone will just die at the end.) My favorite theory is that the higher dimensional beings don't take kindly to wormholes/pocket universes, as they might damage or hurt them somehow. The series will end with some disaster destroying the gate system once and for all, with humanity and earth based life stranded, unable to communicate, on thousands of worlds throughout the galaxy.
