- Come tour The Parent Trap House, from the 1961 movie, starring the lovely Hayley Mills and Maureen O'Hara. A beautiful ranch home in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. In this episode, we go upstairs and see Susan's room, the bathroom, the Master Dressing Room and the Master Bedroom. We'll also explore the inside of those mystery rooms in the courtyard that we never got to see on the show. There will be some surprises along the way, including set design bloopers.

I'm so glad that I came upon the second half of your exploration of the Parent Trap home. Again I must say that this has to be one of the best videos you made. Your ability with 3D software and knowledge of architectural design together make this such a rich experience. I'd be interested in knowing what software you use as well as where you developed such expertise. I'm just blown away. If I ever build a home I'm pretty sure I'd hire a movie set designer to collaborate with the architect.
First of all - thank you so much. I'm glad you're enjoying these. I love the idea of hiring a set designer when building a home. I use Sketchup Pro to model and Lumion to render and create tours. I have a degree in Architecture. I graduated in 2012. It's where I learned to use modeling and rendering software. And I've had an absolute obsession with set design my whole life.

Every detail is exquisite. How long did it take to make all the tiles on the stairs … but I have another question: In Becky’s quarters, in the painting in his bedroom of a man sitting down with his back to us … is he wearing pants? From my view it’s just a furry butt and I can’t imagine why Hecky would have that on his wall. Please enlighten me. 1961 Parent Trap is my favorite movie of all time. Thank you for including this in your brilliant work.
Hecky not Becky
As a teenager in the 80s, I really loved Hayley Mills. I watched her films on the Disney Channel, and imitated her English accent in my everyday speech. As many times as I have seen The Parent Trap, however, I never really paid close attention to the set design. But now that I have seen this tutorial, I can honestly say that I do not think I will ever “look” at the film the same way. Teaching interior design with examples of cinema is quite an innovative idea for a CZcams channel!
I was a teen in the '70s, and I always loved this movie. But it always seemed strange that the twins spoke with an English accent although one grew up in Boston and the other in California with American born parents.
Another great episode! I find the 60s decor inspiring. So tired of all the boring beige and browns. There is nothing wrong with introducing a little bit of color into your home. ❤👍
Glad you liked the episode.
Your hard work, lovely voice, beautiful smile and relaxing music make this one of my favorite channels. thank you so much.
Thank you so much !
Hi Marina, I am obsessed with your virtual tours, especially this one. When I was little, I could literally quote the entire Parent Trap from start to finish without any help. I drove my family crazy. What I loved most of all about this movie was the architecture of the California ranch home. Kid you not, when it got to the part of the movie where we would see the ranch home for the first time, I would get some graph paper, draw a replica of every nook and cranny of the house, rewind, pause, until it was perfect. Then I would draw the second floor on a separate sheet of paper and then get Q-tips, put tape on both ends of each one, and then use them as little poles that would hold up the second floor over the first floor. I lost count of how many of these little houses I made, so you can imagine how excited I was to find your video on CZcams. It is my dream to replicate this house one day; however, I know I will have to make modifications to the layout--for one, financial reasons, and two, practical reasons. I was wondering if you have a modified version of these house plans drawn up anywhere. Thank you for sharing this video. It was glorious.
Wow, you sound like me as a kid 😊. I don't have plans that could actually be used in construction, just the overhead views of the layouts.
Spectacular! This house is so entrancing that I’ve watched the movie too often just to be “inside” again. I think it’s the reason this movie remains the more popular one. I love your so precise attention to detail. I think that I’m very observant, and then you point out things I hadn’t noticed! Can’t wait to go to Mockingbird Lane! Thank you 😊.
Glad you enjoyed it. By the way, I always discover things I didn't know too, when I choose a new home to create. There's always at least one surprise.
The bathroom area I really liked! I never noticed the tub in the scene!
When I saw this movie as a kid I always wondered if this house had a roof. It felt like everything was outside.
Great video.
It was a confusing layout for me and took me quite awhile to figure out - probably the most of any home I've done. Once I understood it, it was fun to watch the movie and know exactly where each scene was taking place and how it all fit together.
After seeing the dimensions, it's a perfect potting shed. You must have had so much fun on this project. I love both Hecky's and Verbena's quarters. The 1998 adaptation with Lindsay Lohan was age appropriate for me, but because my mom was also a Disney fan, I grew up watching the 1961 film on VHS and DVD. The Monterey Ranch house was always my dream home.
It's my all-time favorite movie home.
Hooray! Thank you! I love this series. It helps me appreciate this gorgeous home even more. 😍❤️
Thank you. I love this home even more now after modeling it. 😍
I have wanted to live in this house for 61 years, since I first saw "The Parent Trap" in 1961. Thank you so much for this extended exploration of the house!! Do you know if anyone has actually fleshed out real architectural plans for this house and built it somewhere?
Howard Hawks did this, based on the house in "Bringing Up Baby," when he built that same house for his second wife, Slim, in Benedict Canyon in about 1941. The last owners I know of were Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw. Maybe they're still there.
I love Hecky's place! Perfect!
Thank you. I had fun with that one 😊
It's so much fun to watch these tours. Because of your tour of the first floor of this home I took this movie out from the library. I had never seen it before and I am enjoying it very much. What a great home this would be to live in. Maggie's home was also beautiful but I don't think we saw enough of it to do this kind of detailed tour. Thanks for all the hard work you do on these.
I'm so glad you're enjoying them. So nice to know there are others who love these TV movie homes.
What a house. Completely crazy, with its open-to-the-elements design & shared gigantic master bath. But it's gorgeous.
That's m assessment too. It's my all-time favorite movie home, but it wouldn't be very practical to live in.
Yes, I always noticed the awards and the ukulele. The only thing about the home is having to go outside to get to every room. The only problem with that would be when it rains or when it's cold outside in the months of November-March in CA.
You are a genius! This is the most amazing thing! I love this house so so so much! If I ever win the lottery, this is what I would build.
It's my favorite movie home of all time. Hopefully you saw part 1, if not here's the link. It takes us all through the main floor and courtyard.
czcams.com/video/If72RskfAv0/video.html
I never could quite figure out the layout of this house, so your 2 parts on it have been very interesting and enjoyable. I do agree that you would need real enclosures around the dining room and kitchen for all those practical reasons. Also, the master bath doing double duty as Susan's bathroom would not be practical no matter how spectacular it is, especially once the family is reunited and both teenage girls are living there along with Maggie. 3 women sharing the same bathroom? Poor Mitch would be relegated to showering with the ranch hand. They would have to find space for a bathroom for the girls.
Haha. So true. I'm sure they had them share the bathroom because it helped the plot line. But, you're right. Not convenient.
that was super! as a young kid, that movie had a huge impact on me and how I thought I wanted to live my life...a swinging bachelor pad for a swinging dude that I hoped to become, working the livestock, driving a fancy convertible and living the California dream! 'Course i had no idea what all that really meant. I guess the production designers knew how to convey Mitch's lifestyle in such a way that it really portrayed how satisfied he was with his life and how bringing in the ex-wife would really require a thoughtful change on his part. Well, it totally absorbed me without even really knowing why...now I know! thx again...
I like how old movies and TV shows "change" over the years depending on our age and perspective. I was born in the 1960s, so of course I identified with the twins in the Parent Trap when I first saw it. Now I watch it and I think what a hunk Mitch is (same with Uncle Bill on family affair.) In both roles, Brian Keith portrayed the quintessential bachelor - the guy every man wanted to BE and every woman wanted to DATE.
Yes, she was very fascinated by the house. And in the re-make, the maid Chessy said "I knew I always liked you to Mrs. Parker. I think they met in Boston/NY and then after they married, moved to CA and shortly after the girls were born they divorced and she went back to Boston to be with her aging parents.
Love the review of the architecture of this beautiful cinema home. A favorite film of my childhood. Thank you!
I would love a review of the lovely home in the film with Gene Tierney The Ghost and Mrs. Muir another favorite.
Glad you enjoyed it. It's my all-time favorite movie home. I do plan on doing that movie home. It's on my list. The next movie home coming up is from North by Northwest.

This is amazing!!! Thank you so much for doing this xx
Glad you liked exploring the rest of the house.
What an observant eye you have! Your creation of the missing rooms is brilliant. The servants each have to fit their bed, dresser, closet, bathroom, kitchenette, and seating into a space about the size of an average motel room in the U.S. I still love the movie, of course, and the gorgeous architecture, but i wonder if i could be a "loyal servant" in 350 square feet. The classism is strong with Mitch and Maggie.
I had a lot of fun making those. But, yes, it's tight quarters for sure. 😊
Marina, thank you for sharing your amazingly creative talent & hard work with us! I so enjoyed both videos & I especially loved what you did with the mystery rooms! I wouldn't even mind living in Hecky's room! 😄
Thank you! I'm working on part 2 of The Munsters now and then on to Hogwarts 😊
Thanks Marina... Again I've learned so much about set design and design in general! Thanks for the lesson :)
😊
I absolutely love the "imagineering" of the rooms never seen in the film! Beautiful and inspiring work. This movie keeps me coming back for the set design. It is truly a beautifully designed set. I feel it is timeless and fits the style of the home and the people who live in it. How would you redesign this to fit a modern era? I feel it woulld only require minor alterations to update it for a modern lifestyle.
I agree. I think it is pretty much move-in ready. It held up well. Like you said, timeless.
Thank you Marina! This is my favorite home so far!!
This is my all-time favorite movie home. 😍

Thank you! I had fun this time getting to imagine the interiors of those mystery rooms.
Marina Coates - Oh they were such clever dinky designs too!
Absolutely dreamy I love this.
Thank you. This is one of my all-time favorite movie homes. I had a lot of fun "building" the home.
You are enabling my obsession with this movie! I have never had any interest in interior design but you make it interesting. Great work! In today's money how much would it cost to build a house like this in reality? In case I win the lottery! Of course it would be very impractical with our Midwestern winters so I would need to move.
That would be a fun thing to figure out. It was on prime real estate too - right on the coast.
Love it as always.
I really admire your talent and love for the classics❣Very nicely done

Thank you.
This is marvelous sleuthing, Marina. I love all the careful creative decisions you made. You make it so much fun exploring these spaces!
Thank you! I'm a House Detective 😉
I think the mystery room with the stained glass would have made an awesome office for Mitch to handle the paperwork that would come from having a large ranch.
Oooo! It would have. I could have done that. I had it [in my head] in the room next to the dining room that we never got to see, because there is an extra outside entrance there. But, I like your idea. I'd love to work in an office like that.
It always made me think there was a guest room upstairs for Maggie since she descends the stairs to eat dinner with Mitch. It's never said that he relinquishes his master bedroom to her. Also, I met and spoke briefly to Emil Kuri while working at Disneyland in the 1970s, he was delightful.
There must have been. And probably not the same guest bedroom that Vicki uses, since she comes down the stairs from the other side into the living room.
And how amazing that you got to speak to Emil Kuri! He created my all-time favorite movie home 😊

I love this home!
Me too! Ever since the first time I saw the movie.
I always had the impression that hecky and verbena were married. Hence would share a room. Even if they weren't, hecky would live in the bunk house with the other ranch workers. I always though the area were you said hecky stayed was a work room, or office.
Really enjoyed the mystery rooms that you created.

So interesting. I lost count how many times I saw this movie when it came out! Although the premise is so bizarre!
Yes. Not an extremely believable storyline, but fun nonetheless.
Awesome. The additions you've imagined are spectacular. Oh, to have the money to actually build this dream house...
Glad you liked it.
I love your videos! One house I would love to see is the house from Meet Me in St.Louis!.
Thank you. So glad you're enjoying the videos. I plan on doing the home from Meet me in St. Louis someday. 😊
I was sitting in the family room a few weeks ago and could see caddy corner into the living room and the couch. It looked blah, and i remembered what you said about background color. I threw some bright pillows onto the couch and what a difference. I plan on pulling those colors into the family room. Thanks.
You made my day 😁
I really want this home! So in love!
I want someone to build it and invite me over. 🤞
I love your videos. You give us so many layers of understanding that just can't be found anywhere else. In addition to the tutorials of design (e.g., "color beyond"), you also give us navigational renderings that I can't always piece together just from watching the movie. I've not personally experienced this particular architectural style, so having non-contiguous rooms is a foreign concept to me, and I never did work out the overall flow of the house.
One comment--and in not in any way a criticism: You suggest one of the mystery rooms might be a potting shed. Of course your guess is as good as anyone's. (Heck, with your architectural and design knowledge, your guess may be better than anyone's!) My idea, however, is that it would have been a laundry room--which doesn't seem to exist anywhere else on the property. The stained glass window is a bit opulent for either, but I think it's more fitting for a laundry room which might be used on a more regular basis than a potting shed. Plus, I think that location makes sense for laundry as it's near the kitchen and also near the rear stairs from the bedrooms.
Thanks again for your video series, and I am excited to see your next installment of the Munsters' home.
Yes, a laundry room makes sense too. Good idea.
What fun!!❤
I'm glad you liked it. Hopefully you saw part 1 where we toured the main floor.

Wonderful wrap up to this house. Always loved the original film, and thought this would be an awesome place to live.

Love it!! Thank you so much! Have you ever thought in teaching your magic technics? Kind regards to you dear Marina.
If you mean the modeling and rendering techniques, I don't have plans to teach that, but I can tell you the software I use. Sketchup Pro for the modeling and Lumion for the renderings and tours.
I wished I could build this home for less than $100k on my own 2acres. Let me scale it down with 2bed/2bath no dining room open floor plan their island kitchen small courtyard all closed in no pond no pool no separate quarters only one floor dog can’t climb stairs a Jack n Jill bedroom suite with bathroom in between no dressing room no guest room but with the chapel add second bath across from kitchen and courtyard area which is my favorite part with the stained glass window and could make into a guest area with bed up top.
I luv this ty so much❣️of course I’m dreaming but you gave me such a visual because I have incorporated all these colors and textures somehow on a thrift store budget lol and it works! But to see what Mitch and Maggie’s full house would look like …I’m in awe I can’t wait to watch the Parent Trap again!
If you build it, invite me over.
I always loved this house, it was practically a character in the movie. It is the way the indoor and outdoor spaces flow together that appeals to me. However, I never realized that there are NO DOORS between the indoor/outdoor spaces - that is carrying it a little too far! Even in a moderate climate like California, you're bound to have some days where you need to close the doors not to mention the dust, dirt and WILDLIFE that would inundate the house (or burglars??) Are there really homes like this that are totally open to the elements?
I had the same questions as I researched the home. It's my all-time favorite movie home, but I hadn't realized that parts of it couldn't be closed off. A door could be added outside the dining room. But it does lose some of its charm that way. And there would need to be glass in the large window over the sofa.
First. Keep up the great work Marina.
Thank you!
Instead of a potting shed, what about an office for Mitch? He seems like the office type, a place to escape “the women”. These videos are so fun to watch. I’m often more interested in finding out the layout of the sets than the actual plot!
Me too! I'll watch a movie just for the set design.
Love your idea about an office for Mitch.

The storage or potting room I see more being Mitch's private study where he does the paperwork in running the ranch

@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane GREAT JOB! I wonder what it would cost to build the house without the cost of pasturage, if one already had a piece of land. Any thoughts?
I was also thinking of the space you have ID'ed as Hecky's room as Mitch's ranch office, as it makes sense Hecky would be coming from the ranch office for Susan/Sharon's welcome home. I always thought Verbena and Hecky were married, as she threatens to not feed him for the week if he doesn't go along with their plans. But I guess they never actually say if they are married. Also, the "potting shed" would possibly make a nice changing area/restroom for those using the outdoor/swimming lake area. Yes, I know the whole place was a mock-up shell of a house and there are no right/wrong answers, but it sure is fun to play with the layout and wonder, "what if?" Thank you for helping explain my favorite house, you answered a lot of questions for me on layout. Good work!
@@cynthiaward7449 So glad you enjoyed it. Love hearing your thoughts and ideas on the rooms. It's fun to imagine what all they could have been.
I think what you made the potting shed would have been an office. A rancher needs an office and there’s no indication there’s one anywhere else. Also, a large beautiful stained glass window could get damaged and dirtied by garden tools hitting it or leaning against it.
It would make a cool office for sure!
In the movie, when in the bedroom the ukelele was on the dresser, and then a bit later for some reason the ukelele is not seen there.
I've never seen this house before.
It's my all-time favorite movie home. This is part 2, in part 1 we tour the main floor.
You amaze me with what you are able to produce from a minimum of info. Are those windows or doors in Susan's room? They look like doors, but they also look like they open onto air, so they must be windows? I love the open concept of the house. I just figured he lived in a warm California climate to have an open house like that year round. Where did the stairs inside the house lead to if not up to the bedrooms? I'm not understanding how they fit into everything. Did I miss something? Of all the houses you have shown this one is my favorite so far.
Check the video at 14:14 - That's the best view of the doors from the movie and you can see the line dividing the doors goes all the way to the bottom. I think if the sheers weren't on the doors, we'd be able to see outside and they would have had a balcony there for her. The stairs do lead up to the bedrooms, at the top they turned left to get there. But, it just brought you to that open walkway. We weren't shown another way there.
13:56, is that an old Princess Telephone? My mother had one similar to that one there.
It sure is :)
Love your channel! What you do is amazing. I know everyone has a favorite home they want you to do but have you ever considered Manderley from Rebecca?
It's not on my list right now, but I love that home, so I'm assuming I'll end up doing it at some point.

Not anything that could be built from. I create the homes as we see them on tv, which means walls that splay out at odd angles, etc. But I do have tours of Bewitched and The Brady Bunch on this channel.
Awesome job but I have a question...
The split stairway in the living room. You put a guest room to the right. But what did the stairs to the left lead to? You'd think they would lead to the family bedrooms, but not according to your modeling. So what do you think was up there?
Also, I wish you had shown the layout of both floors, one on top of the other so we could see how the guest room fit with the family bedrooms.
The stairs to the left led to the family bedrooms - by way of that open corridor. I realized after I published this video that I didn't make that clear. And placing one floor over the other would have helped. I may add that on my website someday.
@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane Ah, thanks.
This is my dream home. I’m going to have it built and live here, a few tweaks here and there. I’ll contact you when I’m setting it in motion. This is your baby!!
Dream apartment for in the city. Doris Days apartment in Pillow talk. Pleeease do a vid on that!! 😍😍😍😍
If you build it, please invite me for a visit😊
I hope to do a tour of the apartments from Pillow Talk someday!
Ever thought of doing a show of the v house on the bachelor and the Bobby soxer?
I haven't, but I'll check it out. Thanks.
I have made many other homes too. You can see all of the other TV and movie home tours I've made here: czcams.com/users/MarinaCoavideos?view_as=subscriber
But where do the gorgeous indoor divided staircases come out upstairs? The movie implies you can access the bedrooms from there, too.
I wish I would have shown that. The stairs, as they split to the left, take us to the upstairs deck with railing that we see them walking on when the housekeeper takes Sharon [posing as Susan] to her room after she returns from camp. As the stairs split to the right, it takes us to the guest room.
I wonder, in place of their dressing room, if there would have been enough room to squeeze in another bedroom, bathroom, and still have enough room for the master to have it's own bath.
Good idea. I'm sure they had them share a bathroom so they could have the funny scene where Mitch didn't know Maggie was there yet and took a shower in the bathroom and finds a piece of woman's clothing.
I thought part 2 was supposed to include the whole outside area, including the patio and swimming pool area.
Oops! I must have goofed. I think I said that in part 1 and forgot. Sorry. Maybe I'll have to revisit the model again.
Where would Mitch's office be all branches have one the paper work needed to run a ranch requires one
There is room next to the room to your right as you enter through the door on the front of the home that is to the right of the entrance - next to the dining room.
But Hecky and Verbena were clearly a married couple so that room would have been there home right?
There are camps on both sides of that. Some say they were married, some say they weren't. That's one of the reasons I bought the book the movie was based on - to look for clues. Unfortunately there were none. There was no Hecky character in the book. I'm curious - what things lead you to believe they were married?
@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane I assumed Hecky and Verbena were married as well. For one in the scene where the girls are trying to convince Hecky to play a Gypsy and he isn't keen on doing it Verbena chimes in and says "He'll do it or he'll be cooking his own meals for a month." That sounds like a wife talking to me LOL. Also the way they were standing next to each other in the wedding scene is another reason I made this assumption. Maybe Hecky and Verbena had their own little house somewhere on the ranch and used the Jeep or the truck that is seen in the movie to come and go. Maybe you can design them a nice little Ranch House HaHa.
I got the impression they were married as well.
@@BartholomewSmutz I love these insights. Thanks.
@@BartholomewSmutz Now I am going to re-watch it and see if either of them wearing wedding rings.
Wasn't there supposed to be a giveaway of one of the paintings?
Yes. There will be. I just posted this yesterday. Details will be coming soon.
By the way, the details will be on my Instagram, Twitter and Facebook pages, listed below in the description.
@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane thanks. I thought I was losing my mind!
A teenager gets her own walk in closet and bath?
Kind of strange for how wealthy MItch was there was no separate bathroom for the girls. A huge house like that and only 1 bathroom for the family? Also in this home, I would feel insecure. All that openness with no doors in areas. Too easy to break into.
I thought the same thing about the bathroom. It was most likely for the scene where Maggie is staying in the girls' room and takes a shower, leaving behind bra and hose for Mitch to discover. But in real life - not realistic.
Mystery room is such a waste! A little chapel would have added some real class.
Yes, I always noticed the awards and the ukulele. The only thing about the home is having to go outside to get to every room. The only problem with that would be when it rains or when it's cold outside in the months of November-March in CA.
