    I always assumed that kitchen door led to a closet or small pantry. Years later, when I bought a house built in the 50’s, it had a door just like it in the same location as compared to the entry door. It was a small closet pantry and was very convenient to have. It was a very efficient use of space.

    • @MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane
      @MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane  Před 2 lety +2

      I thought about that at first too. But even if it was just a standard depth of a coat closet [2 ft] and then you add studs and drywall, you end up with it protruding out about 2'6" into the hallway. If the hallway is 4 ft, that only leaves 18 inches to get around. I love when others get into the details of these homes and try to figure them out.

    • @MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane
      @MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane  Před 2 lety +1

      I'm curious, did the one in your apartment jut out into the hallway or was it just the depth of the wall, like 4.5 - 6 inches?

    • @MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane
      @MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane  Před 2 lety +1

      Sorry, one more question. Was your pantry flush with the wall or did that wall bump out into the kitchen? I'm trying to figure out how there would be depth to the pantry and yet not have it protrude into the hallway. Thanks.

      No washer and dryer, no laundry room in bldg, washer outside on porch drying clothes by hanging in the kitchen. That would make people crazy especially in winter!
      By today's laws little Ricky's bedroom could not be called a bedroom because you had to go through another room to get to it. That's a no-no in NYC.

      Meee too!👌 love the nooks, crannies, built ins. I don’t live there, but Burbank and Glendale have a lot of houses, apts. like this. I’d actually like to live there JUST because of that reason. I could never convince my other though.🙁 And a lot of the furniture back then was so practical. I actually used to have a drop leaf table that when done using, there were four folding chairs that stored into it when done, a little drawer for your utensils in an (when stored) area that was about 3x18 space. The wings were a great size. When it was set up, it seated 4 easy, 5-6 a bit crowded, but you could do it, a regular size table. I’m SOOO sorry now I passed it on. It was great for sewing, buffets, too lol.

    This was my favorite apartment of the two. However, my favorite living space they inhabited was the hotel suite they stayed in while in Hollywood. There was something so quintessential mid-20th century L.A about it. You spoke of the picture that found its way into several other TV programs. One thing I noticed about Paramount Studios from the late 60's and into the 70's was how a lot of the artwork and furniture from The Brady Bunch made its way into at least two other TV shows: Love American Style, and Mannix. In fact, there is one episode of Love American Style where the head shots of the entire Brady Bunch made an appearance in one scene (I believe the episode was titled, "Love and the Dummies?"). The Brady couch even made an appearance in an episode, and also their curio cabinet in another. I'm sure stuff like that has happened a lot over the years, often escaping our notice. This was so much fun - especially with our two guests!

      Studios repurpose sets furniture all the time. They will reuse a defunct series entire sets verbatim when a new rolls out. The logic behind it I'm guessing would be, If it gets the axe after the first season at least money wasn't wasted on a new set. Most of the pieces of a set look showroom new even though they were acquired years ago.

      @@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane Hi Marina! Here's something else you may find interesting. I commented before, a while ago, that I used to work at Universal Studios in the 80s as my Day Job when I was a young actor. One thing I had noticed was that they would trash an extraordinary amount of new sets and wood etc once they were done with them! I asked my friend, who worked in a different department and had worked there longer than me, about it and his explanation was very interesting. On the humongous Dumpsters where they trashed the set materials I couldn't help but notice that the company stamped on the trash bins was called Universal Refuse Company.. My friend confirmed that Universal Studios owned the Refuse Company separately and would collect the set materials, recycle them and then the Studio part would claim the sets as a loss come Tax Time! What a Hat Trick that was!! Ahh, good times..

    My grandmother grew up in my “grandparents” home. Originally a 1 bedroom but my grandfather added 2 bedrooms and a bathroom. The tight closed cozy feel is real. Wall sconces and real wood trim. Same era quality built. The living room decor was early American, red carpet, white ornate furniture. Grandpa built a small bar separating the living room and kitchen. The front porch was similar to a home 2 houses over, a French style iron arbor. Tiled and ferned. It was on a small property, detached garage and gramps, sectioned off the yard brilliantly. So much pride and imagination people had with their homes. Many years later I finally appreciate what my grandparents did with what they had. By today’s standards, it was chic 😂.

Just a hint for travelers through that area - it's less than a day's journey to Indiana, Pennsylvania to see the Jimmy Stewart Museum and 1/2 way between the two cities is Puxatawney where that rascal of a groundhog predicts a longer or shorter winter each year. That is a worthwhile place to also visit.

    This was a treat. I’ve always loved APT. 3 D. I try to pay attention to the props used. I’ve never seen the asian figurines, or candlesticks or vases with the long prisms hanging down. I have a few of the brown Saks hat boxes the are always visible on the top shelf of the closet. Sometimes Lucy is carrying it in, with the top altered with paper so you can’t read the logo. After many years of searching, I finally found out what company made the tablecloth that Lucy used often, even in their Connecticut home. It was a California linen company called Cala Art or Cala Print. It came in several different colors. They hardly ever come up, so when one popped up on eBay, I made sure I would be the owner. I’ve tried to figure out what the pottery vase that looks like it has a feather on the front of it. Maybe someday.

    Another beautifully rendered tour! Just fabulous! I love the mid century details of the furniture on the show. I love that you found the exact images of the little fairytale characters in little Ricky’s nursery. That set was such a great representation of the “dream home” of middle America at the time. I was having a conversation today about how the concept of the dream home has changed over time. Then it was very functional but not huge in square footage. They had some great details too. Recently nearby my neighborhood in Nashville, Patsy Cline’s “dream home” sold. It was a modest mid century ranch but very comfortable. Nowadays, no country music star would consider that their dream, they would need at minimum of 3000 square feet, a stable for horses, a guest house, and five acres, lol!

All of the detail you include is just amazing: the Degas Ballerina painting that I always used to notice when watching the show, the mystery door in their first kitchen, and the image of Lucy and Ricky on the bedding in little Ricky’s crib! I had forgotten about the episode when Lucy and Ethyl went to see the bigger apartment, and did not remember that the former tenant had a grown daughter in what would become the nursery. Here’s a thought - maybe the nursery was a few feet longer, and the daughter could enter the tiny hallway that leads into the bathroom without having to go through her parents’ room?? You got me thinking about that! 😂 Thank you Marina!

    I’ve always daydreamed about the floor plans of different tv homes. In the 2nd apartment, when they came back from Europe, little Ricky had grown from a mere toddler to a preschooler. That season he had his own room, entering from a hall. I had always imagined that Ricky got permission from Uncle Fred to close off the door into the nursery by Lucy’s bed, then construct a short hall beginning from the left of Lucy’s chest of drawers, then extending it slightly to lead to little Ricky’s big-boy bedroom door on the right, and somehow connecting it with the bathroom hall. That scenario would allow for the bathroom to remain where it is in the video, I guess. 🤷‍♀️
    You imagined the apartment beautifully.

I grew up in the 70's and 80's and have to say how impressed I am by the amount of time and detail you put into your projects! Did you study architecture? I have some suggestions; Could you possibly do the Connecticut home from the later seasons of " I love Lucy/Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour" and also the " Lucy Show" home, which I've always loved (and looks suspiciously like the Cunningham's home in "Happy Days?!")
    Thanks You so much! Bill R.

    This show was from the 50's so I never saw it during the original run but in reruns that were continually shown. I believe I saw all the episodes at one time or another. Interesting to learn that little Ricky's bedroom was beyond his parents' room so he'd have had the same problem as the previous renter in having to go through his parents' room to get to the bathroom. It's good they eventually moved to the country since I doubt he'd have wanted to put up with that for long. I mostly remember the first apartment. Thanks again for all the detail you put into these. I look forward to watching them.

    Aha🤭! Two different apartments! I always thought their alt. Was just remodeled as I could never figure out about the window. I was about 5 when the original show started and yes, we did have a TV - but I don’t remember much crime that time. I’ve always seen this show and so many others in the late 59s and early 60s when our Mom worked and we were home afternoons and all through the summers. It's such an amazing program becuase it's so smart, realistic and thoughtfully presented. I just finished watching the I Love Luch episode: I really appreciate all the homework and thought that you put into these videos. Espeically Lucy. It's like seeing cherished home movies again-for the very first time! THANK YOU!!! -by the way, I was the librarian at the Museum of TV and Radio (now called the Paley center) for eight years.
