Marina, thank you for bringing the Bunker home back to life! I was born in 1965, and so I grew up watching “All In The Family” as a kid in the 70’s. So many fond memories. The he said he had a cousin who died up there. But told her well goodbye and don’t be scared. She of course ran after them. Funny stuff.

When I was eight years old my mom lived in a place that was pretty similar to the Bunkers. There are a lot of homes in that part of RI that date back to the era their home most likely dated back to (20's/30's to mid to late 40s). I was born in '74 and watched a ton of this show growing up. This is a really great overview.

I can't believe you actually got this home in detail. I lived in a very similar house back in the 70's, with one exception our house had three bedrooms, and you were correct assuming there was a matching bookcase on the other side because we had it just like that. And you got the downstairs to perfection. Congratulations, this brought fond memories of a bygone era. I did have a few tears when you described, Archie's and Mike's bonne voyage on the porch. I'm very old and more sentimental these days.

You did an excellent job recreating this TV home and just as good of a job reminding us how much we loved this family, even though they only existed on the TV screen. There are no shows on TV these days that can make you love the characters like the ones back in these days. Probably the most touching scene ever was after Edith passed away and Archie goes to their room for the first time after her belongings were removed. He found one slipper of hers, left behind. Hi Marina! Scott here. First off, every aspect of this tour blew me away. Secondly, I think the aspect that really blew me over was the “nostalgic sepia” look the set designer was going for - to create an aesthetic that was like going through an old family photo album. In the 1970’s, this would have *resonated* with viewers, as the generation of sepia photos were still alive at that time.
I’m also very drawn to the built-in room dividers which, in concert with the kitchen pass through, beautifully created flow from one room to the next while still separating each space. I love that kind of visual.
*I was waiting with baited breath for that toilet flush!!!*
I also love how you incorporated the personalities of the characters, as well as the vision for this show. All of that information and commentary is so necessary in order to understand the space we’re exploring. The family who interacted with that space was no more one-dimensional than the home itself. BOTH were multi-dimensional, which is what I think made this show so compelling.
Lastly, here is my vote for the next space I would love to explore: *Three’s Company.* Have a great weekend, Marina!

Marina, THANKS! so much for the tour. I was a wee lad when the show aired. Emotionally it meant/STILL means a lot to me. The Kiss, the CHAIR, the move to California. Edith's/Archie's tender + funny moments. Few ppl in the world I've ever wanted to meet, but the entire cast of All in the Family + the Jefferson's would be it. I even imitated both George (walk) Archie's pronunciation of turlet. Mike breaking Archie's chair is priceless!

"All in the Family" is one of my favorite shows of all time. I think it has some of the best writing and acting ever on network television and it was certainly groundbreaking. It got away with pressing boundaries because you cared about the characters and it was genuinely funny.
A quick note -- there were two other pilots for the show before the third one that actually got approved by CBS. In the first pilot for ABC in 1968, the set is noticeably different and seems to match the exterior more. There is an enclosed porch and a small foyer area, and the kitchen is completely different and much smaller. Also, Norman Lear originally contemplated filming the series in black and white to give it an "old-timey" feel, but the networks balked. Instead, he went for the sepia-toned set and wouldn't allow any bright colors in the interior decoration.

The house reminds me of my Grandparents brownstone home on Utopia Pkwy in Queens NY, but they had the left side. The difference was there was a step up from the living room to the dining room and there was a large fireplace in the living room corner, which matched the fireplace in the basement. The stairs had two landings. There was only one bathroom at the end of the upstairs hallway. I was only 6 years old when they moved in 1964 but I still remember the house and the big Christmas tree they would have each year. I remember my Grandmother would say the she had a fast or slow oven, that was fueled by coal. It was my job to go downstairs and fill the coal bucket with coal from the bunker. When this came up in my recommended videos I almost didn't watch it since I have seen All in the Family so many times over the years that I felt I knew the Bunker house as well as the house in which I grew up, but I'm glad I decided to watch, there were so many things you pointed out and described that I had never noticed. I have watched several of your other house tours and enjoy seeing the detailed layouts that you do as well as the nostalgic feeling seeing the TV homes from shows I watched growing up. There are a couple things though that I'm hoping you can clear up for me about the Bunker home.
The upstairs of the Bunker house never made sense to me, as is the case with most TV homes, the locations of upstairs rooms either don't make sense with the downstairs rooms or they tend to change locations. There was one episode that showed Mike & Gloria's room directly across the hall from Archie & Edith's room and the bathroom was at the end of the hall. Seeing your floor plan of the upstairs made me wonder which wall is the connecting wall to the house next door. Since the downstairs rooms had a connecting wall with the house next door, there had to be a connecting wall upstairs as well. It looks as if the connecting wall would be the fourth wall of Gloria's bedroom, the one never shown, and the bathroom wall next to the bathtub, in which case there could not be a window in that wall.
I am also confused about the stairs in relation to the upstairs hall. Taking the second turn going up the stairs has you facing in the direction of the attached house next door. I assume that the upstairs hall would be perpendicular to that section of the stairs and since that second turn in the stairs is near the middle area of the house, I would think that the hall should run along both sides of the stairs from the front of the house to the back. It seems as if we only see half of the upstairs hall in the show, which would be the part going to the right as you enter the hall from the stairs, even though the upstairs rooms shown are supposedly all that are up there. Archie & Edith's bedroom appears to be in the front of the house, but that doesn't make sense, you would have to go to the left after coming into the upstairs hall. Maybe I'm not figuring this correctly or possibly it just doesn't make any sense to begin with! I would love to hear your views on this.

I came to the same conclusions as you.
When you get upstairs you would be facing the wall that is shared with the neighbors. You're right, the rooms shuffled around a lot and didn't make sense with either the exterior we are shown or the way it lays over the main floor. I tried so hard to make it work. I even resorted to cutting out the rooms as they are shown to us on paper. I sat at the table trying every possible scenario. My end conclusion - it can't be done. That's when I decided to go with the episode where we get to see the placement of both bedrooms and the bathroom.
