    You are too kind my friend. I played for a lot of big names in country music in the 80's and 90's. Some were current stars, most were "has been" artists that had most of their hits in the 50's through 70's (I enjoyed those people more). I always enjoyed being the guy in the shadows. Now, I still play and it's usually solo gigs with my laptop and backing tracks. So, doing casino work and such. So, I have to sing every song etc. I NEVER wanted to be a singer. lol But, it keeps me playing.

    Hi Scott. Great video. I had one of these amps many years ago and if you're not aware? That hum can be cured by turning the reverb pan thru 180 degrees. Simply spin it around and the hum disappears. Best wishes from Scotland.

    • @c3mac55
      @c3mac55 Před 3 lety

      If that doesn't work or isn't an option (as in a Super Champ) you can use lead (Pb) roofing flashing to shield the reverb tank. Or buy a new reverb bag for the unit.

    Thanks Brett. Yeah, the wildest things that NOBODY could ever imagine getting an amazing sound out of, often end up being another man's secret. Then you hand your axe to someone 2 seconds after you just played the coolest sounding tones on, and that next person gets nothing but a garbled mess out of it all, same settings and all. It's amazing how much of it comes from the way you actually PLAY your gear, not just your axe. YOU have to manipulate everything in your signal chain just right.

    Thanks Dana. I love the history as much as anything. I'm glad you appreciate the little bit that I toss in there. It allows those who want to read the WHOLE story to just Google it and find a lot of really in depth stuff on it all. I find that stuff so much more interesting than just getting something & just playing around with it. The history somehow makes me appreciate it a lot more. You can kind of get into the head of the maker & have a better idea of hot to achieve what they had in mind.

    The JC-120 is one of the best clean tones ever tossed out there. A perfect example of a GREAT amp that is clean all the way up. You can add anything you want to it, but, when it needs to be clean, not many amps can beat the JC-120 for sure.

    LOL, yeah, too many people focus on the gear and then spend more time arguing about it instead of just playing on it and finding it's strong and weak points, solving those issues and moving on. My particular way of thinking is to simply find SOMETHING that has a great clean tone with plenty of clean headroom and then pile on anything you need from there. Distortion is easy to create. 8 thousand different distortion boxes on the market. lol Loud and clean is a good place to start.

    LOL, thanks my friend. The amps that I have used on all of my videos were all identical. They were the very first modeling amps. The Johnson (Division of Digitech...in a round about way) Millennium JM150. They are 3 different things in one. They have the 2-12AX7 Preamp tubes, 2 solid state power amps (stereo, 75 Watts per side), All digital preamp and internal effects processing. The amps all have the Celestion Vintage 70 12" speakers. My outboard pedals: Morley Volume, Boss CS-3 Compressor.

    Hi Scott, this is Dave. Thanks for another kick ass video. When considering sound I think of Peavy, Marshall, Fender, etc., and how the amps sound different. But you've made me realize that, amp history wise, I haven't paid my dues and spent enough time learning about the guys that created the amps for these companies and how one guy can make such an change overall. I look forward to more videos like this if you can manage the time to make them, Thanks again.

    I had one, but it was a 410 version. Sounded best with GE 6l6gcs. However, there was a time when GEs were suddenly gone and I was left with Sovtek 5881s that sounded terrible in this amp. So I sold it. The loop on this amp added a lot to the sound. You could jumper the loop and bring the amp even closer to a Boogie sound. When tubes were not readily available I finally sold it and moved on to a Marshall and a Boogie.

    Hi Gary. You would go out of your guitar, into the Boss Compressor first thing. If you have a tuner or a wireless, you would go to the tuner first, then the wireless then to your first effect, which would always be your compressor....then off to all of your other effects. Your volume pedal would NORMALLY be the last thing in the chain before your amp, but since you have the gate on the Alesis, I would put the gate (no more compression set on it) after the volume pedal, then into your amp.

    Thanks my friend. Yeah, it was fun trying to make the amp do what they are supposed to do. So, I had to play differently and use dynamics again (which I rarely do with my rig.....I just let the volume pedal be my dynamic for me). So, going back "old school" and trying to make the amp break up by forcing it to was a blast from the past. lol Yeah, it was cool that Paul enabled everybody to order their speakers of choice back then, he had some great ideas that just ran out of time with Fender.

    That little battle will be coming for sure. I'm afraid that everyone would know which is which since the tube amp has buzz and hiss and the others I use....you can't even tell that they are on. I'll have to do clips that are DURING while I'm playing so they only hear the TONES.

  • @groovydjs
    @groovydjs  Před 11 lety

    Hi there David. The thing with the amplifier being as loud as it REALLY was in this video (which was ear splitting), the camera mic has a compressor built into it and it really reduces the volume input as not to hurt the mic. So, I simply need to wait the 5 seconds that it takes after such loud sounds to allow for it to reset itself. So, it really blocks out a lot of what I'm saying after those BLASTS. lol Then, those people you're talking about, they gripe when I wait so you can hear me. lol

    Yeah, Clean is the ultimate search for me as well. That is the cake and the rest is just frosting and sprinkles that you add later. So, a clean signal with plenty of body and power to build on is the foundation to everything. It has to sparkle and sound the same at any volume...then the majority of the battle has been won.

I'm running a 2005 gibson explorer 76 reissue through a 1975 twin reverb. i really notice the buz when my studio fluorescent lights are on. Is this something in your town? It is so hard to tell what is causing it without getting inside of it. Most of the Rivera amps are pricey, but...depending on what's going on under the hood, if someone has tried to modify it themselves and screwed something up etc. It could possibly cost more to repair than it would be worth to you, or anybody else that would be looking for one that is all original. If you WANT to, possibly split the cost of a bench test with a qualified tech for an estimate.

  • @groovydjs
    @groovydjs  Před 11 lety

    I NEVER suggest Duncans for ANYTHING, but DiMarzio make great stacked single coils that sound 100% vintage, EMG is always a good way to go (they don't have to be active ones), but pretty much everybody makes a noiseless single coil. So, leave that vintage axe at home if high gain is what you will be doing and grab one that you don't mind modifying with the pickups to shut that mess up, to take on stage in high gain situations. You'll be working with bad power on top of that at a lot of gigs too.

    EVERY solid state amp sounds better than EVERY tube amp ever. It's just always been my experience. I've NEVER heard a tube amp that sounds any better than even a Wal-Mart solid state amp. I just HATE those horrible things. God's honest truth. They ALWAYS distort when I don't want them to. I have been solid state for a long time myself, because I got tired of dealing with the weight and crankiness of tubes, but I do wish I still had my old tube amp, just for old times sake, if nothing else. It was a 1965 Supro Thunderbolt bass amp. Put a good bass on it, and houses would rattle. Of course, I traded it off long ago for something that was easier to get around with. It was also my main guitar amp.

    Have you been to the gear page dot net? There is a 4 page praise on these amps. It's titled "Am I an idiot for liking my Yamaha G100-112?" But, they go on to discuss the others too. Thanks for pointing me at them. I'll track one of those 3 down and check it out. I just love a great, clean, solid state amp and then toss the multi-fx on there and I'm good to go. Everybody over there seems to agree with you. Talking about Robben Ford using one etc.

    Dear Master Scott...
    There is a rivera amp.....not fender...but just rivera..in a natural pine cabinet and the speaker cover is "cane" if i spelled that correctly..It hums like hell, it is all original and maybe can be fixed..he wants 400Us$...what is yr opinion?

    Scott. This one was a real treat. I'm used to your review being at a low level. I can really hear the difference between the tube and your usual Johnson amp, It's like night and day. Before we got all of these high gain amps those things had to be cooking before getting any sort of a distorted tone. Were those amps just Live rigs. I'm sure recording with those would be an engineer's nightmare with all that hiss and fuzz.

    Did you sell this amp? Probably since comments are 5 years old.. .

      Yes, I sold it as soon as humanly possible. No more tube amps for me.

    Hi my friend. It is NO different than playing a 6 string. None at all. You would love it. You can't bend notes very easily, but you wouldn't want to. So, you can rest assured, if you grab a 12 string, you could take it on stage right now, never having touched one and play it without having to screw around on it at all. It actually feels better on your fretting hand. There isn't the pressure of the individual strings to cut into your finger tips. 12 strings feels like half the pressure.

    I think it's high time we put our ears to the test. I heard something very familiar out of this little Fender at one point...like the tone you use a lot of the time from the Millenium. A blind "can you guess which is tube and which is SS shoutout"...both clean and driven. That would be fun.

    Hi, Scott, I'm still learning about this. Why wouldn't you use a noise gate or hum debugger in this situation? And speaking of hum, what is the best way to control single-coil 60 Hz hum, especially in high-gain settings?

    Its cool you have the confidence to play in any situation and will not get rattled by the star!A rare quality indeed!Have you considered being a studio guitarist?I hear they are so good that they can sight read a piece of music and play it perfectly the first time!Regardless of how complicated it is,

    Hey Scott, another interesting video about a gentleman who knew and still designs some killer amps. There were so many comments posted about this video, so I don't know if somebody pointed out that during a good section of this video you were probably out of the range of the camera's mic so I could barely hear what you were saying. One final comment if someone doesn't like you or what you say then don't bother watching your videos and make nasty comments. Nobody is forcing them to watch.

    I make all my noise in a condo playing through headphones (Sennheiser HD600s) and Guitar Rig's blues models, which typically feature moderately hot gain settings. Often, I prefer GR's cleaner country settings, which don't emphasize the hum, but, overall, Guitar Rig sounds a bit lifeless through the headphones, no matter whether I tweak the settings or not, and I'm using a decent sound card. Which powered sound monitors would you recommend if I'm not using a guitar amp?

    hey I caught your video on Tuning u did last year ... about a week ago and helped me out a bit but was wondering... can u help on how to determine how far forward and backward each individual saddle needs to be ... I also use a wound G string as well as I play 6 string ... and use a 7 set of strings without the high E .. so that would mean that the D and the wound G would be egual right ?.. but yeah if u could help on how to determin how far forward and back for each individual saddle.be great

    Hey Scott, lovin' your videos as always, man! Is it rude If I were to ask you a question...*Sorry, wasn't sure you answer private messages*...I have studied every note on the guitar fretboard...well, every note on every string up to the 12th fret. Though, I am kinda stuck from here...with the knowledge I have gathered...do you have any suggestions where I should go from here-on-in? Sorry to bother you! Keep rocking! - Josh.
