Yeah, and the way the gas station clerk emphasized "mileszzzz" to show he had that extra little edge into prickness himself, although Spade pretty much deserved it after his "I'm laying the sarcasm on pretty thick" bit. Alot of characters in the movie didn't like his character due to his sardonic nature, including the older executive who told him straight out "I don't like you. You're a smug unhappy little man who treats people like idiots"
I love how in this scene, Richard is the idiot while thinking he's the smart one when he's talking sarcastically to the Gas guy and the gas guy doesn't give a shit.
That's the map of Illinois which were in, on the border of Iowa which is where Davenport is... 22 milezzzz away lmaooo! My favorite part of that scene.
For all the funny in this scene, one of the underrated moments is when Tommy Boy smells his hands after they get gasoline on them with that devilish smile. You are so missed Chris Farley :(
This whole scene is one of the best comedic sequences ever! When Spade is talking to gas station guy and you see Farley In background wrestling with car door. When he sniffs his hand for gasoline...(I do that at the gas station whenever I pump gas just to see if anyone notices and gets the reference). Also the 22 mileZ away line is classic. WHAT’D YOU DOOO? also hilarious. I miss Chris Farley!!!!
That's why you shouldn't do drugs or do drugs in combination. I know he was also obese, but even with just that alone, he could have lasted until his 40s at least.
We've all been at 1:36, when you're asking questions to somebody being uncooperative and dismissive, then you decide enough is enough and just stare at them until they answer your question properly.
Mike Fontenot not as much of an idiot as someone who wants to be a dick and not answer your question properly, which i’m assuming is the kind of person you are
@Lee Lee Maybe if you were a stranger on the street, but if you're a gas station worker talking to a customer, not that unreasonable to expect basic civility. (Richard fully intended to pay for gas so I'd count him as a customer)
@@gooel don't forget, this was also before GPS and cell phones, it was common for people to ask for directions at gas stations. Richard was still a dick. They were both dicks actually.
Fun fact this scene was added because the director of the movie actually did that to his car. He thought it'd be funny to add and he made a VERY good choice.
Man i wish i had the theater experience for this bet when the audience saw that door bend back like that they were either goin OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO or they were laughing
Best movie Farley (or Spade) was ever in imo. So many little tidbits like when he spills gas on his hand, smells it and smiles. It's the same random sort of humour from that troupe back then that made them one in a million (at the time). Like in Billy Madison at the kids' party when Norm MacDonald is just spraying the little boy with the hose while the boy just sits there , but gently protests "mr please stop. why are you doing this?" it makes no sense, and that's what makes it so great. Or the clown on stilts entertaining at the birthday party. Only to fall over, stop moving and bleed out of his ear. If that's not avant guarde, I dunno what is.
One minor mistake I noticed (and it's probably been noticed by a number of people) but the door... in the clip the driver's door is clearly dented, but when Richard goes to open the door, it's like brand new (no dents). Obviously the two parts were probably filmed before the part where Tommy bends the door but this is probably something the dirctor's missed?
Nope, just you missing humor. Masterfully directed scene. The humor you missed is the door looking fine and then falling off completely when he pulls the handle. It was done intentionally.
It's even funnier when put in the context of the rest of the scene. It's funny BECAUSE before spade walks back to the car we see the door beat to shit, but when we see him get there it looks fine. It's even played up by him buffering out a scratch on the door before opening it and having it completely fall off the car.
Filming location = 306 Main Street, Schomberg, Ontario, Canada (now an Audi dealership as of 2023). Opening few seconds of this scene = just up the road at 375 Main Street in Schomberg.
I just now noticed a big space between the fender and the driver's door @:25 . Probably because it was set up for when he backs up and bends the door backward.
I don't know how many trips to the gas station my brother and I have shared since 1995, but not one of them has passed without either him or me declaring "they only got diesel, better go to the next station" and laughing our @$$e$ off.
I was at the post office one day and i had a package in one of those big lockers they gave me a key too. I put the key in and turned it to open it and the door fell off the hinges. I took the door with the key still in it to the front desk and the clerk behind the counter goes, "whatudo" i busted out laughing.
I don't get why there wouldn't be designation signs with distance. You'd think they'd spot at least one sign that had Davenport and how many miles away.
Spade met his match with the gas station clerk. Like two sarcastic samurai.
Lol 😆

David Spades expression is priceless when he tries to get back in the car

He should have replied: "Yeah, as thick as your skull."
Such a missed opportunity...

I still laugh hysterically every time I watch this scene. So simple yet so damn funny!
For some reason, the look on Chris' face just when he says "What'd you do" just makes me laugh insanely. I don't know why though.
LMAO yaaasss
Because he know he's guilty lol

I love the gas station attendant. He was in the 2nd season of The Red Green Show playing a character nothing like this one.
He was in the third Police Academy movie as a rich-guy cadet.
That gas station attendant was being helpful. He gave him the answer. It was Rich who was being a prick.
