It’s interesting you mentioned people getting stuck on Step 3, I still go back to that step today and I’m 10 years sober this year. I probably will till I die. Thanks for the great teaching Rabbi, it was perfect timing for me! B’H 🙏

Ernie Kurtz wrote that. He was a great guy. He passed away. We used to be in touch and we would discuss chasidic stories.

This is why we have to see reality as a play we've been cast in. We can watch our own performance with detachment. There is no need for drama, there is no jeopardy: we don't need to act out, we just accept God as the playwright. Hamlet's friend Horatio is clearly a recovering alcoholic or Hasidic scholar...
    For thou hast been
As one in suffering all that suffers nothing,
A man that Fortune’s buffets and rewards
Hast ta’en with equal thanks; and blessed are those
Whose blood and judgment are so well commingled
That they are not a pipe for Fortune’s finger
To sound what stop she please. Give me that man
That is not passion’s slave, and I will wear him
In my heart’s core, ay, in my heart of heart,
    As I do thee.
