    HappyConsoleGamer Your original Phantasy Star 1 review was the one that brought me to your channel back in the day (5 years ago). This game changed my life too-it made me a gamer for life. Until I heard you talk about what this game means to you, I thought I was the only one! Thanks for doing what you do.

    I was 4 when my dad brought this game home in "88. What an amazing game. I had such a great time playing this with my father & brother. I mainly controlled when we were in towns and I helped draw the maps, but I loved watching them play. Back then we would have to go down every hallway in the dungeons and draw maps as we go. So many memories. Ever since then I've been hooked and I still play it every couple year's. The original 4 Phantasy stars will always be my favs.

    Somethimes i wish i could have grown up in that era where the videogames started, you guys can really apreciate how the games evolved over the years and have great memories of that. Im from '95 and i start playing since i can remember on an old NES my family had, i remember playing Mario all day with my brother, but i didint even know that was a videogame and where did it came from, it was just there when i was born and it was a normal thing, i think just like the kids see the computers and cellphones today. I didnt even know SEGA used to do consoles until i had about 15 and started really liking videogames, i think you guys are really lucky to have those memories and i really like to hear them, when im 40 too i will tell the younger gamers how awesome was the first time i picked up a PS1 control and played a 3D game, or the very first time i played a game online with a person from the other side of the world :).

    I'm sad that the only Phantasy Star people talk about nowadays are the PSO games, one of my favourite RPGs of all time is Phantasy Star IV and no one seems to know what the hell I'm talking about when I mention that game, and I'm younger than them. =c

    • @MrArach666
      @MrArach666 Před 9 lety +10

      ***** PSO itself was great and it didnt ruin the series,the problem is that they kept going with the online games and completely abandoned the single player series. If the original PSO was just a one off title and they kept doing the single player games as well there wouldn´t be any issue,in a sense kinda like the Final Fantasy series has been doing,regardless of quality.

    • @blackdragoncyrus
      @blackdragoncyrus Před 9 lety +1

      MrArach666 Also, with Shining Force, they only make "Shining" games now, which aren't grid-based strategy RPGs... Shining Force 2's up there with PSIV on my list.

    • @MrArach666
      @MrArach666 Před 9 lety +3

      Cyrus Kensaro Man,that´s the one that pains me even more,I played all of the early Shining games and loved them,including the sort of spin offs Shining in the Darkness,Shining Force CD and Shining the Holy Ark,but since Shining Force 3 most of the releases in the series have been either mediocre or complete garbage and nothing like the older classics. I recently played through all of the SF3 scenarios again and its still a fantastic game.
      I also love PS4,it was a bit shorter and easier than the previous ones but the story and characters were a lot more fleshed out,the music was amazing,all in all probably my favourite traditional JRPG on the 16 bit era. I kinda feel like playing through it again,havent done it in years but I still remember all of the characters and most of the events,including the scene that FF7 is so famous for,but PS4 did it first with Miss Alys Brangwin. In fact,PS2 also did the same with Nei,but to a less impactful degree.

How our looks change over time :) I'm about to jump into the 20 minutes to go on this video, but that game... I'm 38, my brother is 41, and we still ask each other "do you have the Folder?" A cheap yellow folder with all of our graphed out maps, steps, every item and its price and attack/defense/other attributes in every store on every planet. He and I shared a love of 3 things: Mom, Star Wars and Phantasy Star. Still do!

    This is the way a "Let's Play" should be.
    - Straight to the point.
    - No distracting unfunny attempts of humor.
    - No going completely off the rails.
    - Good gameplay.
    - Informative facts and memories.
    - You're by yourself (Unless Robman is with you!)

    I never played Phatasy Star games. But after watching how excited you are about them. I finally bought the PlayStation 4 Genesis 50 game disk with Phantasy Star 2, 3, and 4. Doesn't have Phantasy Star 1 on it. I'm playing Phantasy Star 2 right now.
    I've always love Final Fantasy 1 with all the grind, heal, level up, and buy weapons. I feel the same way just sitting here for hours for the character to be strong enough to move on to the next part and do the same thing over and over again. Thanks for sharing you memories.
    You are right about focusing on the future of being 13 or 14 years old. I remember being 14 years old and wanting to come to California and skateboarding. I was living in a small town of Clovis, New Mexico of 30,000 population. At 21 years old, I finally made it to California and skateboarding around and feeling so great. Thanks again of you passion of video games. Even thought you video game path and my skateboarding path is different. The passions if still the same.

    Like you, Johnny, Phantasy Star literally changed my life. I got it for my 13th birthday, and had never played an RPG before. It took me so long to understand the concept of 'experience levels'. For me, 'level' meant 'game level' - when I got to experience level 2, I was so confused because the level hadnt changed, if you know what I mean! Phantasy Star kickstarted my love affair with RPGs which endures to this day.

    This was very enjoyable, definitely much more than most LP's out there. You always know how to keep the viewers interested by sharing your personal stories, nostalgia and trivia about the game.
    Interesting thing I noticed is that they show the HP of the enemies which I think was quite a thing back then. Good or bad, it depends, but they were brave enough to go with that formula. While keeping HP hidden can make players more focused, it can also be frustrating sometimes.

    HCG inspired me to play all the way through this game. I love the monsters and the music and the graphics. Tough though, there's no way to restore MP other than healing up in town. The final boss fight was friggin awesome. Maxed on levels and was one hit away from losing, but pulled it out. One of those get off the couch and scream fights. Then the ending was a HORRIBLE translation and super hilarious. Thanks for getting me into it HCG!

    Just want to say that I got this game a while back based on your love for the series, this one in particular, and I'm greatly enjoying it. It's quite a bit before my time (was about 10 when the PS1 launched and grew up on that mainly), and I don't think I'll be able to get too far without dungeon maps, but I am enjoying it. I have that ability to like enjoy a particular thing a lot more than I normally would simply by understanding why someone else loves it. You are so passionate about these games in your videos that I end up enjoying them even though I have no nostalgia for them, and sometimes I end up building my own nostalgia memories for some games that I play in this way, in the long run. =)

    I remember seeing this game at a friend's house back in the days. I was so amazed by those dungeon levels. I could only dream of getting a Master System though because like you said I had the NES and I had to plead to my parents to get that machine. I played through it recently and it was like stepping back in time. So great!! Right now I'm working through P.S.3.

    I have to agree 13/14 is a big year for development. I can recall playing Nintendo 64 like crazy with friends, 4 players on a system was beyond cool and a great way to get 4, 8 or more people together to battle it out.... I dig the let's play man, I especially like when you talk about old Sega games because like you said not many people had the master system. I played one when I was a kid but only once and never met anyone else that had one. Growing up a Nintendo kid it'd cool to hear about the other games I missed out on. My Sega collection is small but I'm trying to slowly gather up cool games for the */16 bit era. Love your channel HappyConsoleGamer

    Hey man! Love your channel! Just discovered it and probably I am your newest subscriber! Love everything! I was born in 89 but I have such a nostalgia for games since the Famicom...
    Curious fact in by birthcountry Bulgaria, back in the day, we got most things in their asian variants. So I got a Famicom instead of a NES... And lots of games for the Mega Drive were Japanese in our game shops! Maybe because of the russian communism and influence back in the day, but Asian gaming was SO present in the late 80's and 90's up unitl the Playstation release...
    Anyways I wanted to ask you what happened to your review of the Phantasy Star 0? And thoughts on PSO2 ? Maybe you talked in some videos but it was not in the title so I didn't read it. If so in which ones?
    Sorry for the long comment, I hope it's not a burden, and as a fellow reminiscent nostalgic gamer, I salute you and hope for more content!!
    Cheers!!

    no matter what comes out these days, nothing holds as much value to me as the Phantasy Star series, this one in particular. Though Phantasy Star II was my first RPG and the game that taught me how to read (that and being the fact that I was 3 when the game came out). I still remember my uncle bringing his Master System over to the house my family was living in at the time and setting up a small 13" TV on the kitchen table in order to play Phantasy Star with my father. I was too young to understand fully what was going on, but I remember the music and the fancy colors to this day. Hell, I even have the soundtrack to this game on my Android device for my long drives for work, that's how much of a Phantasy Star fanboy I am. To this day, I make it a mission to play through Phantasy Star at least once a year.
    I am glad to know that there is somebody out there who shares my level of enthusiasm for Phantasy Star that I have. I have such fond memories of this game and the rest of the series. Some of the best moments of my childhood involved watching my father and uncle play this game and its sequels until the wee hours of the night (which always makes me laugh because my mother tells stories of the volume being too loud and waking her up at night, causing her to yell at the two of them). Good times indeed.
    Keep up the good work!

    You are right on with the whole 13 year old experience thing! For me, 1991 was that year. Final Fantasy IV (II in the States) and A Link to the Past were the experiences that bound me to gaming as a serious hobby forever :) Great video here of a great series. I miss console Phantasy Star games....online on the Dreamcast was magical! And the last one I experienced, unfortunately :(

    I played this on my Gamecube via the GBA converter this summer after your videos. It was a truly great game which reminded me of the Bard´s Tale. I like this almost puzzle solving element when you look for a particular item.

    If I have to give the series credit, I love the spritework for monsters in each game, from what I've seen. They look awesome and animate fairly well. Despite my first contact with the series being PhSt2 and being in 2011, I still remember being like "yeesh, is he hitting me with his brain and gushing blood?!" at the biomonster in game that's a mix of the mushroom monster attached to a Charger monster's head. Its attack animation can be that the mushroom peels back the charger's forehead and there's a bloody brain that squirts juices out. For the unknowing.

    I fell in love with this game at first glance. I still beat it from time to time and the grind isn't even a bother, it's just a joy to play it over and over. Check out the fan translated remake for the PS2 and Phantasy Star Generations 2 is about to get an english fan translation too.

    The Master System was the first console we had, like someone else said it was popular here in the UK. I was so young my brother used to give me the controller that was unplugged, its funny because i never remembered what the console looked like, just the controller.

    I just got the master system original a few weeks back! only need to get PS4 complete and I have the full set CIB (of course I have PS4 as a cart :D)
    I love the PS series, I love it so much.
    One of the best story arcs in all of 8/16bit JRPGS.
    I beat PS1 originally on the GBA as I missed the Master System.
    Thumbs up on the video man!

    Im so happy youre doing this Johnny a little gameplay while youre talking about the games love it, And on a little sidenote im still dreaming of a restart of the Phantasy Star series (real one not this online thing with another story) and of course they must have the same 3D dungeons as in this one and pay respect to the old ones with drops of memories from them.
    I can dream cant i ;)
