agreed, I love the videos but at the same time they're bittersweet since I don't know any of the gamers or fans of these hobbies anymore. It was a long time ago and I carry on the same way I did but man does it feel eons away to have a game of halo online or hit the local comic shop with the "CREW". I have two young amazing kids to share these hobbies with now but its still not quite the same.

@@4w3rdp72y if only we could do a "happy console gamer con" and all get together to relive all our memories for the day. We could dress as our old 2000 era selves, play some local halo matches, fire up a Dreamcast like its 9/9/99 all over again and of course finish with a Lord of the Rings marathon ala 2003. At the end of the con we can all cry on each others shoulders and lament the idea of going back to our present day lives haha (no offense to our present day loved ones/family of course, don't want my gaming/toy displays to get chucked out the window)

2000-2001 were some of the most magical years of my life. We lived in a small town outside of a major Canadian city at the time and I did long-distance learning over the computer. I remember how AOL instant messenger was installed on it. I've never had the internet before, but I never really had "small town" interests. I was fascinated by anime, doom metal, post-punk music and video games. I created an AIM account and it opened up a huge world for me and I made such amazing friendships, I remember all of my friends online would coordinate their Phantasy Star Online runs due to being in different time zones and the sleepless nights playing on an n64 on the crt while chatting with my friends about Gundam Wing and that yes, Final Fantasy 2, 3 & 5 were being officially released on the playstation soon.
It's the same reason why I love going to conventions, you can talk to other people so easily and strike up a friendship on a shared interest. It took me a long time to reckon with the fact that those years had passed.

Johnny really(REALLY) doesn't like to promote his channel. you'll never see the old "hit the like and sub button if you like this video" from him. He's a true old fashion youtuber and unfortunately youtube's algorithm doesn't recognize his channel as one of the big retro gaming channels(like the completionist or MetalJesusRocks) due to relatively low views on his videos, so you won't get a recommendation to watch his video. For example, I've been watching the AVGN channel since 2012 but only in like 2016 I got a recommendation on youtube for HCG. I love Johnny's humble approach, but I would love to see his channel bloom because he is by far the best retro gamer youtuber out there.

Max Payne? Good game, but iconic? No. The only iconic games from this list, in my opinion would be Halo, GTA 3, Smash Bros but I dont think its more iconic than the original and maybe FF10 but I dont think its iconic. @@mw5885you have to look at it more context-wise. The whole final fantasy franchise was something like the upcoming GTA 6 is nowadays for people. When u hear the name final fantasy today, there is not this much of euphoria, cause of all the bs we got the last ten years. 10 following up 6, 7, 8, and 9 was something way different! These were 4 bangers in a row! A similiar situation we have with tony hawk 3. The first 2 ones were something like pokemon red & blue at that time. Everyone played it, because skating and nu-metal were THE sh!t at that time on MTV. Even though the euphoria had its peak with tony hawk 2, the announcement of 3 was still a big thing.

    • @devan_danger
      @devan_danger Před 2 lety +2

Low latency is the number one reason. Bc unless you have a retrotink or ossc there's going to be multiple frames of lag displaying retro consoles on a fixed-pixel display.
Also side by side, the image put out by a CRT is head and shoulders above what many flat panels are capable of especially with low resolution content.
There's just no contest. From brightness to color and contrast the image put out by a CRT is just head and shoulders above what lcd, or led tech puts out. The reason they got phased out is because they're heavy and more expensive to manufacture than the flat panel alternatives.
Pickup a local CRT, clean it up inside and out, take care of it and I guarantee it will outlive the TV's you buy today.

It's always nice to see these videos. Time sure flies when you have fun playing games. Back In those days I only had an NES console. I had a lot of fun with it though.

I remember back in 2001 getting my Gamecube and going to Sam Goody, Spencer Gifts or Suncoast to get games or Anime. I distinctly remember getting an Evangelion 01 figure at Suncoast. I remember when being into anime meant you had to choose between sub or dub vhs tapes, I always went for sub lol. Good memories. Love the Orange Road shirt Johnny!

When you said you've always played on the floor it reminded me that you also sit on the floor for your videos, which is kinda funny trying to imagine that.

I had my first apartment in 2000, and it kinda reminds me of this. The big tv, still watching things on VHS, interior decoration on a budget.

I was like 10-11 back then and still remember hoarding every cent I came across and doing every small job I could find just to go to buy 1 anime VHS maybe every 2 or 3 months. Still have some of them, they just get me in the feels.

I really appreciate videos like this and it's why I enjoy channels like yours and MyRetroLife. It's cool to see these windows into the past. I'm very regretful that I don't really have any photos or videos from my time growing up/in college - it's all lost. I still have the memories, but those fade a little more every day. Anyway, this was a great video Johnny! Happy New Year!

2002-04 room setup had my pc next to my bed, my 27 inch RCA. I had my GameCube, Dreamcast, genesis and my 6 dvd changer.
I would fall asleep with box sets running all night.
My room was also next to the garden in the backyard so had a lot of natural sunlight and vegetation going on.
Games I would play heavily in that time period was NBA 2k, NesterDC for Dreamcast, and nba street vol 2, Mario sunshine, and the Zelda OoT master quest.
    Take me back!!!

I love this era so much
The games felt magical and each console had such a mystique to it
This was the last era for me where id spend many hours with my friends playing in a room.
I love the convenience of online play but its definitely not as fun as playing with your friends in a room

This brings me right back to that period dude... I had a Dreamcast myself, and PS1 not PS2 unfortunately since i was a 14/15 year old pleb lol! i only had so much money so it was up to birthdays and christmas to get my gaming needs met haha! but lots of memories playing Shenmue Project Justice and PSO 1 and V2... 100's of hours.... good god! Capcom vs SNK 2 was our staple to play on DC since it never did release over here we had to resort to retrieving the ISO and burning it! What an era! i was glad to be a part of that time in gaming! also the SNES and Genesis era! arguably the golden age of gaming!

I was a 12 when ff7 dropped on ps1. I'm glad I can relate to a lot of what Johnny says. All the game magz, fanzines, blockbuster rentals, tapes, cds, big TV's, friends relaying info, secrets in games people talked about in school, not sharing game secrets with certain people... the hunger was real back then. Today it's still cool but before I felt like I was the only guy into ff7. What a time to live. Thanx for taking me back. My game room was similar. Simple yet very effective. Lots of pizza hut with demos and lunchables case my parents worked late. I gamed all day. Best time of my life alone. 🤙 now I'm married with kids and yup life is crazy lol. Good day yall!
