Having worked since I was 16, I became homeless at 33 with my 3 year old daughter. I was told there was no housing available. I drove round found 12 properties that were empty and took the list into the council to ask if we could move in any of them. I was told all the houses on my list were being held for as asylum seekers. I eventually found a private rental.

Absolutely disgraceful. The first port of call should be Council Tax records to see if anyone is actually paying it and a record of recent payments. The second check should be someone actually visiting the property to see if there is someone actually living there or it looks like it is occupied before issuing threatening letters like this. There are 300,000 homeless people in this country living with relatives on the waiting lists. It appears the Council is far more exercised in finding accommodation for migrants than they are for local people who have probably been waiting for years.
Empty properties still attract at least 100% Council Tax, so that won’t always tell them anything about occupancy.

Hampshire council compulsorily purchased my parents’ house and my grandmother’s house around 1964 , in Basingstoke, to build an estate for the “London Overspill”. and the Council did not pay us enough money for my parents or grandmother to buy new houses anywhere else. We had 3 or 4 acres of land. My parents’ marriage broke up as a result. My mother and I were put in a terraced council house and my mother went into a deep suicidal depression from which she never recovered.
I am astonished this medieval practice is still a thing. It seems so barbaric. In America, the Constitution says that no one be deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law. That includes innocent until proven guilty, the right to face one's accuser, to understand the nature of the accusation against them. And it includes a right to trial by jury of one's peers. And no cruel or unusual punishments or excessive fines. Of course that is being increasingly ignored here, but it is still the supreme law of the land. I am surprised the people in the UK do not have similar protections. I am really surprised. I am so sorry you have to endure that.
