Ford Mondeo Mk4 replace the door speaker

  • After suffering a few months of a door speaker distorting the sound I've finally got around to replacing it.
    I bought a pair of replacement speakers and it is worth replacing both the driver's and passenger door speakers even if only one has failed. This way the speaker characteristics and the sound produced remain in balance.

    I quickly watched your video before tacking this job and it was straight forward enough - done the complete job in under 45 minutes and that includes re-using the old surround and connector (cut away the speaker from the surround and soldered the new speaker connections to it) ... it looks more "factory" this way and I managed to get a replacement single speaker from Halfords for £11.99p (£10.80p with my 10% AA discount) so bonus!
    You can also buy some trim removal tools for a few quid from eBay which are a godsend if you tackle jobs like this occasionally. These reduce the risk of damaging / scratching any of the trim.
    Whilst the door card was off, I also took the opportunity to use some double sided take to stop the leather from peeling back as the windows go up - i'm guessing the heat caused this so i'm not sure if that's a common fault.

    All I will say is my Mk4 58plate Mondeo 2.2 diesel has currently got 159k original clutch and dmf, had it since new never given me a moment's trouble, all I do is regularly service it every 8 to 10k change oil filter. Done the water pump and cambelt at 80k. Only other thing was the rear bushes very straight forward easy job. Best car I've ever owned, had a Vw Golf before it which as soon as the warranty was up went wrong constantly it had 3 turbos over 5 years one under warranty fuel pump issues, clutch went at 80k just a rubbish car will never buy another VAG car again.
    I will be sad to see my Mk4 go in November when my Mk5 arrives been by far the best car I've ever owned. It's just a big relaxing mile eater. Hopefully the mk5 will be as reliable.

    Thanks. Clear video keeps a simple job simple.
    The fault with the original speakers is common manufacturing fault where the voice coil rubs on the permanent magnet.
    Bought a recovered Mondeo speaker to use which had exactly the same fault as the original.

    Just bought a complete set of speakers off a Ghia model that had the Sony stereo. I've already changed the head unit for the higher spec Sony one and I am going to install the matching speakers. They are the proper injection moulded plastic ones and not the cheaper cardboard type😆

    Ooops... what happened to the inner lining at 3:55? Old speaker reluctant to leave home? Thanks for this video btw, I'm just about to tackle the door latch on my driver's door that is very sticky in cold weather - tends to not want to close & latch securely. Scary when the door decides to fly open on left turns...

    The tweeters are working and the replacement speakers are the same impedance as the originals so all works well.

  • @smiffy866
    @smiffy866 Před 5 lety

    Hi nigel, great vid. Did your factory tweeter still work with the adapter you used? Ive just bought a set of pioneer components with the same speaker adapters (i think) so need the tweeter feed to still be working.

    • @NigelEaland
      @NigelEaland  Před 5 lety

      The tweeters have their own audio feed so changing the main speakers has no affect on them.

      Thanks. I kept the tweeter as it worked fine. I replaced the speakers with Scosche 6.5" 400 Watts.

    Nigel, that's a good video thanks. Can I ask, did you replace the component speakers with coaxial speakers? and if so have you had any issues.

    • @NigelEaland
      @NigelEaland  Před 6 lety

      I think the ones I used were Triaxial (www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Mondeo-MK4-Scosche-6-5-400-Watts-4-Way-Front-Door-Car-Speakers-Fittings-/301936606303). I've had no problems.

    • @Funky-Gibbons
      @Funky-Gibbons Před 6 lety

      Ok thanks, I'm just waiting for a pair of Pioneer coaxial speakers to arrive which I had already ordered, if they don't sound good enough I might put them in the back because I need to replace all 4 speakers and get something different for the front. I didn't really want to start going down the component route and start messing about with the extra wiring and cost.

    Hi, I own an ford mondeo from 2008 with 6000cd player and I have the same issue with distorting sound. The big problem is that this is the case for all speakers... Is this bad luck? Could all the speakers be damaged at the same time or there could be any cause for that? Does anyone else encountered this problem also?

    • @NigelEaland
      @NigelEaland  Před 5 lety

      It is very unlikely that all speakers have blown at the same time. I would still test the feed from the radio by taking one of the door panels apart take the speaker wires off and plug in another speaker. If it’s still distorting then you need another radio. eBay have got loads of them.

    • @ciprianandrei5751
      @ciprianandrei5751 Před 5 lety

      Thanks a lot, I appreciate your help! I'm going to try this.
      I really hope that the problem is from cd player, because it sucks anyway, its only working with audio tracks, mp3 media files are not supported, and i don't know if has any bluetooth connection capabilities...
      Any suggestion for a cd player which is compatible with the buttons from steering wheel, and display panel from instrument cluster?
