I was on a road trip from Oklahoma to California in 1987 in a new Acura Legend. I was driving by an airbase when I witnessed two of these taking off. I had never seen them before and it was pretty unsettling. They made one pass over and then circled back. On the second fly over my car suddenly went dead and I lost power so had to coast to a stop on the side of the highway.
The aircraft didn’t fly over again and my car started without any issues. It was a very strange experience and one that I still look back on.

Love the f117 an awesome aircraft.
I was kind of shocked at how small these planes are when I first saw one at an air show in Virginia. I was shocked again at how big F-15's are when I first saw one parked on a tarmac in Florida. F-15's are big planes, kind of like the rhinos of the sky.
I was surprised at just how big an SR-71 actually was. The thing doesn't look big in pictures, but it's actually about 18 and a half feet tall from the ground to the tops of the rudders, and a small child could stand in the afterburners ;v;
@@JetFalcon710 18 feet is tall! I could definitely see an SR-71 being a big plane--certainly a very long plane--big enough to carry enough fuel to do what it does. I was surprised to hear that the fuselage of the craft leak fuel when on the ground so that the titanium sheets that the plane is constructed from have enough room to expand and seal back up in flight.
@@scottgraham4038 Yeah, the SR-71 is also very long. I believe all the space behind the cockpit is just for fuel. It was also usually refueled shortly after takeoff, mostly because the SR-71 could take off more easily with a smaller fuel load. And yeah, it did leak JP-7 fuel while on the runway. There wasn't much risk of it being ignited, though, because trying to light the stuff with something other than TEB was like trying to light engine oil on fire -- it's flammable, yes, but its flash point is too high for it to be lit with matches or a lighter
@@JetFalcon710 Good stuff!

No the F117 remains useless today.That was the first generation stealth.Looks nice with me and Ben Rich standing with it.Only problem that the pentagon took me out of the picture because i told them too and of my many more classified programs i worked on.Why you ask because of my family future security i wanted protected at any cost so the pentagon said okay to that.So i am the only one and the pentagon with the pictures of me and Ben Rich alongside the F117 stealth craft.
David Myers Phd Bsc ImechE. It definitely wasn’t useless during its time in combat. It performed the majority of the deep-strike missions, and only one was lost out of thousands of sorties and over almost 30 years. Compare that to Russia losing 4-10 aircraft in just one week against tiny foe Georgia and against Sams that it should have known how to defeat, and then perhaps you will have a greater appreciation for it.
The cost and development programme outstrip it use.I like the design which was based on a old 1937 design from Germany but not the stealth part.

The F-117A's was the first airplane to be stealthy, and fly by wire, being able to hit their targets, and return to their base safely. The pilots fooled the Iraqi's and hit their targets with pinpoint accuracy and all aircraft returned to their base safely. The only drawback to the airplane was that they was only able to hit ground targets, and had no defensive weapons to protect them.
