    if the beat maker laid the musical composition for what evolved into a completed song once melodies and lyrics were added should definitely receive royalties. and if you wrote it, you too should be collecting royalties. in this day in age, you can call yourself a "producer" without actually making music and still collect royalties. case in point: DIDDY

    Hello Tami, first and foremost, I wanna thank you for taking the time out and creating all of your CZcams videos, especially the video about Split-Sheets. You are truly my flashlight, as I journey down this dark and sometimes lonely road of songwriting. And for that, I'm forever grateful. Honestly, I've never heard of a Split-Sheet, until you shed some light on the subject. Anyhow, I'm an aspiring songwriter, and I feel my breakout moment is near. However, no matter how many books I read about the craft and business of songwriting, I feel unsure and slightly intimidated of the unknown. Reason being is, I've read and heard the horror story's about how shaky the music business can be. And the last thing I want to happen in my first milestone, is to become a victim of shady-business-dealings, do to my Ignorants. Anyhow, can you help me? Would you be willing to make a video dedicated to a Songwriter first "Professional Placement" maybe you could cover some of the do's and don'ts and walk us thru this BIG DAY!!!

    Sometimes I write and produce my own stuff. Sometimes somebody would produce my music and I'll write the song by myself. But whenever I collab with other artist I e. Producers, writers, etc. I always make sure at the end of the session before everybody leaves. The split sheets are done to prevent protect myself legally. Even if the song dont make it onto the label. I make sure the split sheets done just sure in case if the producers decide they want to submit it to another artist or so in case if somebody decides to license the song. I will still be able to get my cut. And it will prevent disagrees later on Down the line over royalty splits.

    Prince, you still need to have a publishing company with or without a deal. Go to your local office and get a dba for that and maybe get it incorporated later once you start generating substantial income. When you register your songs as explained in the video, your publishing share would need to be allocated separately from the creative writing side.Usually it's equal to your split as a writer/producer unless you have a pub deal or someone else is getting a percentage of your share.

    Hi Chris, congrats. The splits need to be established first between you and producer and then you submit them to the label, they will get their attorneys to send you both ppwk and then they will file the splits with BMI/ASCAP, etc...
    Now is the time to set up ur pub company because ur pub company will need to collect on ur behalf and will need to be submitted to the label. For example, if I get a placement i would send to the label:
    T. August, LaTrellMusic/EMI/ASCAP 50% (Writer only)

    Thanks Tami! I just wanted to check philosophy before i get started ... i try not to wait until after the fact:-) I've been working w, Nashville writer's mostly lately and they believe that melody and lyric is the song& the rest is arrangement but I have always believed that if someone is there as and contributes they deserve a piece . So I guess its also a matter of who you are working with and who is wielding the most power ... and if you want to continue to work with/for them :-)

    its the same really so if you own 25% on ascap side it would be 50% on bmi.or if you own 40% on ascap, it would 80% on bmi. remember split this in half goes to the writers share (40%) and the other half goes to the publishers share (40%). i hope this helps!

  • @TamiLaTrell
    @TamiLaTrell  Před 11 lety

    Hi Keanna! Thanks for your question! If you wrote or if it was agreed to that you would get publishing for your contributions to the creation of the song then yes, your publishing company needs to be listed and split assigned. As far as the videographes is concerned, that is something i have NEVER heard of and I wouldn't advise doing that. Maybe you can work out some type of payment plan with him for his marketing contributions just so he is being paid something. Hope this helps!

    hello, as I explained in the video the splits are determined by who ever wrote the lyrics and who made the music. Artists usually aren't entitled to publishing unless they write or it is previously understood by the songwriter and producer. An idea doesn't mean you get publishing. The producer would get 50% and the 2 songwriters would split 25% and 25%. I think you need to get a better understanding on what points/royalties are so maybe that will be my next video that I will do! thanks!

    • @TamiLaTrell
      @TamiLaTrell  Před 9 lety

      thanks Elijah! Top line/melody without lyrics is just a melody. However, melodies are significant. and if that person was at the studio with the writer the entire time, writing the song and throwing out ideas, i dont see why they shouldn't get publishing for their contribution to the song.
