Now there are basically two options left to hitch a ride on an MD80 1.) jumpseat on an MD80 freighter 2.) end up on a World Atlantic Airlines repatriation flight
Awesome! I love the MD-80/DC-9. Nothing quite like the sound of a jt8d at full boogie. Plus they just look great too. Compared to today's ho-hum, twins on the wing jets. I would always try to sit in the back as close to the engines as possible. Love that spool-up sound at takeoff. Shame to see them getting put out to pasture. Air travel used to be much more exciting. Happy trails jt8d's.
Chris Nizer My flight to Miami and back in September on Delta N956/981DL was fantastic. Seat 34E, right next to the No. 2 engine! Videos on my Channel :P
@@michaelo1929 Absolutely! Remember when going to an airport was exciting? All the different types of aircraft, liverys, classic jetliners made the time spent at the airport an enjoyable part of the vacation. Now it's a grueling task with all the fun of oral surgery.
Sometimes the most dull and routine things are the most beautiful. I don't know about you, but anytime I see a large metal object defy gravity and leave the rugged terrain, I find it incredible and amazing. Doesn't matter what size.
This takeoff reminded me of a near ground collision we had while I was jumpseating on a DC9 around 1996 in DFW. We were cleared to cross an active runway and an AA MD80 was given clearance to takeoff on the runway we were about to cross, and when I looked to the right and said "hey guys, why are the runway lights moving? (it was a dark night). The moving "runway lights" were the landing lights of the MD80 coming at us. Just as we had crossed the hold line, the FO yelled, "STOP!" , and the wingtips of the MD80 went by about 50 feet from our cockpit. No one said anything, controller, us for a while, and I doubt the MD80 crew even saw us. Every time I look down a runaway at night, that airplane comes to mind. Unfortunately once all the MD80s and B717 are gone, so will those "runway moving lights" forever. Long live Mad Dogs.
I really miss those classic birds. Before covid came along, they came and went from Columbus every day, and I never got a video of one. At least I got the 717's before they stopped flying in.
I came from a video of Delta and Spirit Airlines fighting over the radio. This plane is so cool... I really like the design of the engine location and tail fin.
For me every MD-80 series airplane take off is awesome, but you are right, this is by far one of the best!! Absolutely perfect!! The beauty of this aircraft and of this take off are so almighty that the word "incredible" is absolutely appropriate. Because this is an incredibly beautiful aircraft, and you did an incredible good job!
living about 20mins southeast from LGA engraved in my young memory is hearing the roar first and then seeing exhaust pour out against the horizon and those 2 iconic stabilizers above the vertical fin. the back of those engines would face my neighborhood directly during climb out from LGA and you could absolutely hear the windows shake on a quiet enough day
Nicely done 👍. Great capture. This brings back my trip to Saint Paul. I flew from San Francisco to Minneapolis in 2012 February on a Delta Airlines MD80. It was my connection flight from Singapore to MSP. Plus it was my first winter flight. On the return journey we were bit delayed due weather. Thanks for the video.
Truly stunning. It was a gorgeous takeoff, yes. But you deserve a ton of credit for some stellar camera work. Incredibly smooth... and the video is so crisp. Excellent job.
I still remember the last MD-80 I that I saw. Was just taking off from the Phillip Goldson International Airport in Belize. Passed above at 100mts or so. Quite a view. Beautiful machine.

Oh, the MD-80. I love them. Too bad that the last flight of one of those in Colombia was about 2010. We don't get to see them anymore in my country. :'( They were phased out for A320 and E190.
Definitely starting to love the MD-80, gorgeous plane, sounds absolutely amazing. Cockpit is bad for todays standards in the likes of Airbus but pilots really seem to love this thing.
why do airplanes even have a windshield in the cockpit anymore?? The pilots can hardly see anything from them anyway. They should be replaced with TV screens that can easily be removed if they should ever fall. Take a look at the back of your smart phone. Do you see that 3 mm dot? That’s the camera lens. Manufacturers could put these in the nose for a better view of the runway when landing. In fact, OEM’s could put cameras all over the plane to give pilots a view of every inch of the aircraft in cases of malfunctions. Currently, if you don’t get 3 green lights for landing gear, the cockpit conversation goes like this: “Is the landing gear down?” “I dunno.” “I guess we’ll have to buzz the tower so they can take a look.” And if these cameras are recorded on a third black box, these cameras would help NTSB immensely with accident investigation. Am I the first person to think about this??

The fact this is a 10 year old video lows my mind. It’s absolutely incredible, amazing camera work

The quality of this video is excellent
The landing gears retract faster than that of a 737. Just another example of an amazing piece of engineering Douglas built.
A prime example of Douglas craftsmanship, before the McDonell merger came along and screwed the company's desing philosophy over.
Gotta forward this onto Captain Jeff. He's a DL MD-88 captain who passed through MHT for the first time on June 25. He loved the place.
