In October 2016 I got the chance to fly the legendary MD-88. No european airline operates a MD-88, so I used the chance to fly one in the USA. Delta Airlines has a massive number of MD-88 aswell as MD-90 and Boeing 717. In this video you can see the engine start, the taxi and takeoff with a great sound. So untwist your speakers and enjoy!

IF YOU'RE A PASSENGER THAT CAN HEAR THAT "SWEET BUZZ" OF THE JT8D ENGINES OF THE MD 80 SERIES YOU KNOW IT'S TAKEOFF ROLL TIME. GODSPEED ! SUPER 80 AND SERIES. THANKS!
The audio quality is fantastic! Perfectly captures the Mad Dog singing its song. The startup is a rare treat too. You can clearly hear when fuel is introduced and the engine lights off.
The song that goes ROMROMROMROMROMROM
Maan, you NAILED the entire engine startup sequence.! liked!!
Such a lovely sound. To me, this is the sound I think of when I think of jet engines. The newer high bypass fanjets of aircraft today don’t do a single thing for me. They aren’t impressive in any way, shape, or form. Long live the JT8D!
At least Trent series is much closer in terms of buzz sound
Well modern engines with a high bypass bypass ration burn less fuel
The modern ones have no character
@@westernstar4964 They are now like a boring appliance.
Modern jet engines are impressive in their make advanced engineering and efficiency. But I agree that these engines sound the best. I wish more modern engines had these distinctive sounds.
Brings back memories. Even though it's only a two spool engine, it's fun hearing the pilot let it stabilize before full thrust 🙂
The Pratt and Whitney JT8D was introduced in 1963 when the Boeing 727 made its inaugural flight. The engine can produce 12,250 to 17,400 pounds force of thrust, very powerful
With the MD-80 JT8D-200 series that thrust can be upwards of 20,000 pounds static thrust per engine with some JT8D-219s.
Some can give u 21000 lb of thrust
Awesome sounds and a nice tight turn after takeoff, must have been a cool experience to fly on the old Mad Dog!!
Thank you! Indeed, it was!
2:58 the sound my disposal makes when it runs without water
That first 50 or so seconds with the startup are fantastic, thanks for sharing!
Great seat! I chose the same seat for my flight with a Delta MD-88 in July. Can't wait to hear that engine! Thanks for the video.
The signature buzz of the JT8D. Love it.
Thank you for this video, it fuels many aviation junkies out here.
Totally Sweet !! Love the JT8D's.
Was für ein Blick auf das Triebwerk, echt genial!Daumen hoch!Gruss inselvideo!
33F - best seat on the plane! Great video
I wanna fly on an MD-80.
Dante. Emmett fly with delta airlines they have md80s lots of em
Well on takeoff brace for noise
That ship has sailed in the US. They’re all sitting at the bone yard in Roswell.
The Sharper Image should put this sound clip in their sleep machines
😂😂😂
I’m a city bus and rail fan all day but this sounds very amazing 🤩
This I'd what aviation for me was growing up love it
God I miss this aircraft, the first time I flew in one of them was the 2nd flight ever on my life, so that sound will remain on my memories and youtube videos. 2015 DFW - ORD with American Airlines.
Nice steady filming and great sound! Liked!
Thanks a lot!
that mad roar is almost as good as a 757
I've flown on the DC-8-30 and the MD-80/87 as well. One hell of a plane!
One of the best aircraft ever built... I used to work with them in Venezuela! Beautiful piece of engineering, God I really miss my job.
Wow I'm going to miss this whine. RIP MD88
Nice video. Good take off Delta Airlines.
Alter ist das ein geiler Sound! Die MD-80er sind einfach der Hammer!
Bobi's Aviation danke sehr! :) ja das sind sie 😍
Der perfekte Sitzplatz für den Sound!!! Daumen hoch.
In der Tat! Vielen Dank!
Jap das klingt so gut besonders wenn schub draufkommt
Great sound!!
i used to travel across the country to visit family during the summer and for some reason would always fly in an MD80 so to me, this sounds like summer 😍
Interessanter Sound ^^ Man hört ihn auf jeden Fall gut ;-)
I had this sound on my first flight it was beautifully loud and cool
I love JT8D sound
Pretty awesome!
It’s like a really strong buzz
Beautiful. So much noise IF you were behind that P&W classic, but being at the inlet end, no roar whatsoever...
"JT8D Takeoff Power" is my absolute favorite Pratt & Whitney song. Best when played at full volume from the window seat of a Mad Dog 🐕!
I really miss these and the 727s! Best planes that ever flew!
Long Live the MD-88 the air frames are just over 50 percent of the life span its sad that Delta is not going to keep them and time and cycle them out.
it's inefficient to run those MD-88 compared to nowadays aircraft. But I guess the old aircraft will longer be used in some developing countries
*flies to Venezuela or whoever buys these mad dogs just to hear the JT8D's again*
@@user-hy9yv5pk7f venezuela and the DR
Boah Hammer! Sehr schöne Aufnahme!
EDDTSpotter danke sehr!
Wow that extreme mad dog buzzaw!!
Man do I miss these jets. Long live the mad dog.
Came to take a look at some videos of the MD 88. Delta just retired this aircraft from their fleet.
Dat sound ^^
Schönes Video ;) Like!
PlaneSpottingBerlin ✈ Aviation Videos vielen dank! :)
wann kommst du mal nach TXL? ^^
PlaneSpottingBerlin ✈ Aviation Videos mal schauen, hab aktuell viel in der Schule zu tun ^^
I'm flying on a MD-88 from CLE-ATL in 2 weeks, got mixed feelings about it, kinda nervous and also kinda excited to experience it in person as I've watched many MD80 t/O's on CZcams. I will definitely bring a pair of ear plugs in case the noise bothers me
Love the mad dog 80

Electric toothbrushes and hair shavers 2:58
I’ve been on the MD-88 and a MD-82 and I can definitely can confirm this!
Leaf blower
Sounds like my mower when the PTO is engaged. Gonna miss that sound!
The JT8Ds in the MD80s series were a bit more tame vs the older ones on the DC-9s and 727 and 737-200s
Best Jet ever build !!! 👍👍
Alter ist das der Hammer 😍😍 alter Falter 😍😍
HannoverSpotter vielen Dank!! :)
Der Wahnsinn! Richtig Hammer! *___*
Danke sehr!
Boah geil !!! Hammer Video!
FootAndFly ✈ HD Aviation vielen vielen Dank!
I’m taking one of these in October, can’t wait
Did not happen bc of COVID

The closest a commercial aircraft will ever get to sounding like a military jet!
Excellent video. Audio quality is remarkable! Good job! Too bad they don't make them like this anymore... It is all silent, ecofriendly and boring nowadays. At least it is for a good cause
Did the volume increase or decrease at take off? @3:00 For some reason it decreased in the video. I came here to see a passenger perspective since I never flew in one. I saw a Delta MD88 article by Yahoo which got me interested in this aircraft.
Can you tell me if u were given or/and wearing earbuds all along? Thanks
Ahmad Shumayal hey :D the sound during Takeoff was actually pretty loud, but the microphone of my camera was just too bad to capture it. And no we were not given earbuds during the flight, though it was very loud in the rear part.
I have flown on a 88-super-83 with the JT8D’s and there is a reason they sell ear plugs at the gift shops, ( if you know your getting on one of these towards the rear near the engines, do your self a favor and buy a pair! My ears were ringing by the time we landed,)
RIP MD88 😞
das dröhnen.. hammer!
Ohja! Danke fürs anschauen!
I like I when the engine is warming up
May I please have a full resolution audio file of this? I want to sample this and use it in electronic music.
great video
Thank you!
I never got the chance to fly on one of these. My parents got to fly on an MD-82 for AA.
#wingviewgoals #airplanegoals #enginesoundgoals
Simply Aviation danke sehr! :) ja hat echt alles gepasst!
takeoff starts at 2:40
The Pratt and Whitney JT8D has combustor cans.
This is just me, I dislike it when airliners begin taxi without setting flaps first. At my airline, flaps are set during flight controls free and correct and then you begin taxi. I know it's safe, they have checklists, etc but just my preference! :)
They didn't begin taxi without the flaps out, it's just that the pushback was weird and they went forward because of the gate.
Audio bliss at 2:45
[*] Mad Dog
Is the takeoff run true time speed?
Sadly we dont get MD-88s in CLT anymore
Glad I got to fly on one back in February, what a great plane. Sadly, the coronavirus is going to put these birds into retirement soon
Sounds exactly like Windows 95 bootup sound
They introduced these to commercial flight in 1988. Imagine the cost to keep a jet from ‘88 running 😳😫
Cheaper than a new plane
Most of the MDs you see are much newer than 88' models
This engine noise is vibrating my phone.
So many times from videos it appears as though these smaller planes are screaming down the runway when the biggest of planes seem to lumber down and are slow. Seems to me the bigger heavy planes should be the ones that need the speed to get airborne
All airliners usually rotate around 130-140 kts, from the smallest CRJ up to the largest 747. The reason small planes seem to go faster is they accelerate much more quickly since they are lighter.
I just took this very same flight on July 14th (possibly same plane) out of the same gate at Charlotte.
The audio quality is far better than I what I recorded on my iPhone and I wish I knew why....
Der Sound der MD-88 ist einfach nur der Hammer ! Klasse onboard video :)
Vielen Dank! Oh ja, das ist er!
Well, they are right next to you if you sit in rear of the plane.
0:27 0:28
Huge leaf blower
Nice N Loud
Who the heck unliked this video???
Probably people who like quiet planes such as the 737max, a320neo, and the a220
JT8s rule!!
My whole phone is is vibrating
I wonder why the engines have a grille in front of the fan
Very LOUD!
I want pay for talkeoff in the airplane. I love jt8d
Delta will soon retire the MD 88 and the MD 90
Musstes du für den platz zahlen? Delta sagt zu mir das der kostet, komisch naja sitze jetzt 32 und 34 xD
update: sitze jetzt genau da wo du sitzt! Danke dafür das du den sitzplatz angegeben hast, tolles video!!
Planespotter757 cool! Dann mal guten Flug! :) Welche Route?

Schönen Abend noch!:)
"powerful takeoff" .. aren't they all powerful?
どこかと思えばシャーロットかよ!
as a former JT8D tech, I cant stand the buzzing noise of the tips going supersonic - much prefer the whine and ominous low rumble of the mighty GE90s
Noise abatement rules have really made today’s airplanes a lot less fun.
Łœłöë
point that bird straight up!!!!
Wow that is very loud and very noisy.
Sounds like a vibrator
Sob sob why did they have to be retired form American why sob sob 😭😭😭😭😭
Are you joking?? That sounds shrill as shit…as bad or worse than bad audio feedback
Trash sound lol i prefer my ge-90
