  • It’s true that the concept of disc golf itself has a long and blurry history, and its origins, like most sports, likely come from several different places since throw objects can date back a very long time.
    Therefore, the history of disc golf isn’t 100% clear, but we’ve done our best to sypher through the information to give you as clear of a picture as possible from past to present!

    Flight numbers were put on the discs starting in 2009, but they were around before that, 2002 IIRC. Also, even a brief history of disc golf should mention Dave Dunipace and how the beveled edge was patented for many years and how once that patent expired, many of the manufacturers we have today got their start.

    Excellent historical video on disc golf! I first got introduced to disc golf in California in the early 80’s and have been loving it ever since! Thanks for all your passion and great work.

    Loved your report and the vintage photos (and correct me if I'm wrong) but I don't think I heard any reference to The Champ aka Ken Climo.

      You are correct! It was something we could have added, as well as some other topics. However, we wanted to keep this video short and sweet since the entire history of everything disc golf related would be a massive undertaking that we don’t have the team for quite yet 🤪
      Glad you enjoyed it!

    Been playing since 2003/2004 but 2009--2015/2016 I was more out of the loop but still knew about the flight numbers now on discs in 2010 mainly from Innova only at the time but others soon copied.
    Actually, the Innova Flight numbers were around since 2004 when the earliest of the longer lasting plastics came out like Innova Pro, Champion, Pro-X/now X and Discraft with pro-Z/now Z, Even in 2005 the flexible Proline plastic from semi-defunct Lighting Now Gotta Go Gotta Throw Last I heard and chatted with the company had the entire Lighting line and the molds, important as they used to import the disc golf bags for Lighting with Gotta Go Gotta Throw selling only the unstamped bags. HOWEVER, though the flight numbers were out in 2004 from Innova though never put on the discs and Discraft had its own system on the discs as did Lighting switching from the War Planes apparently in 1995 to picture of what the disc looked like in flight with a stamp in 1997 with only the rubber putter not having that logo or the plane system before this.
    Oh in 2000's they had to limit the disc rim width that I think was due to the no longer made Aerobe Epic as Aerobe (PDGA approved still) and the other discs they stopped making after 2016 with really only one run of the PDGA approved Sharpshooter series. That was a big innovation in the 2000's missed as was the 2016 changes to minimum basket height for all tournaments past C tier, so most tournaments and courses now in developed counties use the higher baskets.

    And Morrison created the Pluto Platter but Headrick is credited with the modern-day frisbee from the Pluto platter mold being retooled

    Great Video! although according to Udisc there are about14,000 courses that exist throughout the world, with that count increasing everyday! Also, the PDGA membership numbers have just passed the 250,000 mark of memberships on record. A good number of those are inactive, but the medical lockdowns we all experienced contributed to the massive growth of the sport that accelerated the numbers quickly!

    • @jerkwagon
      @jerkwagon Před rokem +1

      @@JustDisc theres nothing wrong with the side swipes to be fair. this video packed a lot of info into a short time, so some segments were really short, I have never really noticed cuts on a video but in this i did, it doesnt take away from it, its still great production quality.. Honestly no other channel is doing this and i would recommend keeping these up.. break it into parts, this entire video could of been 45 minutes long (no one would watch it for 45) but if you break it into 4 parts, release them 1x month/week.. you would still have the retention. I look forward to seeing more mini docs! I know they take a lot of time and effort. Most people have no clue how much a 10 minute video takes to produce!

    The last IFA world championships was in 1982 in New Brunswick NJ (not 81 in Pasadena).
    Since this channel is all about discs, not mentioning the actual discs used in the 70s is an odd omission.
    Only Frisbees were allowed in sanctioned Tournaments. The 119g 40, stable and 41, unstable molds were most used. Injecting these molds with glow plastic made them heavier. These became the first discs uniquely designed for DG. Same mold but weights between 120s and 150g. The Midnight Flyers were THE first DG disc. Before the MFs, the chains spit out 119s regularly. Other Frisbee discs were too wide for the sport

    • @JustDisc
      @JustDisc  Před rokem

      All great info Michael, thanks for the insight!
      Yeah, there was a lot more information we could have included, but we didn’t want to bore viewers or make it too long/detailed

    • @caseysmith544
      @caseysmith544 Před rokem

      No, the other discs were not too wide, players were seen throwing the Super Pro for Disc golf they just putted with a 119 or fastback maybe 40 stable/41 unstable and only had 2--3 discs on courses as the long hole was 390 feet or 130 yards at most with main shot shaping not really there for holes due to the discs being used. You see in 2 videos on TouTube of the Wham--O IFA 1979 Frisbee Golf Worlf Championships they are using these discs including big ones. The American Flying Disc Open was the first event to be mainly Disc Golf in 1974 after doing a few smaller events when a car was for the winner, and had more then just Wham-O, this event caused some players that were not longtime Frisbee advocates to be not allowed in the Ed Hendrick IFL events for the next few years. They used small boxes in 1974 and in 1975 used a pole with heavy wire around to make a disc basket similar to a Golf Hole. In 1982 PDGA had first event as DGA in 1982 on next weekend after IFA world Championships but on different ends of the county but still due to Ed Hendrick they had to use the single 9 chain Pole holes at Oak Grove when others wanted to add more chains the way the few other courses had 12 with standard size baskets of the era and DGA Wham-O discs but a few of the Disc Golf specific models from Wham--O were allowed, the buyout of Wham-O discs meant that the mistake versions of the disc molds got taken back, with 1983 being the year Ed Hendrick was almost not willing to let the sport be opened up to other companies he wanted only the glow Wham-O discs (originally was going to allow Wham--O/DGA Wham--O only) when the players were ready to boycott the events due to discs only being DGA Wham-O as Ed changed his mind to only the glow due to rumblings the players were going to take over the event at same place the first American Flying Disc Open took place with temporary backsets using metal umbrella stands since the city would not allow a permanente course in that park.
      Yes due to the sponsor only Wham-O discs were allowed, this was all before the Kransko/big wheel company later bought out by Little Tyke had bought the Wham-O disc company in 1973 so at that point every sport went on its own, with Disc Golf and Ultimate becoming the biggest disc sports with third Guts or Freestyle due to how old those two sports were, Guts 1955 and Freestyle when the Discs changed from Pluto Platter to 50 gram mold or Super Pluto Platter becoming the Super Pro. In the 1990's an All around world championships tried to make a comeback seeing as a micro amount of footage was on ESPN mainly a interview with the director for a bit but the events never really took off, as there was not really a sponsor.

    I remember my big brother showed my first glimpse into disc golf from some book or magazine in the 80s here in Finland. Thought it looked cool but don't remember anything else. Started playing around 2005 maybe... don't even remember. Anyways, I just enjoy seeing the discs fly and don't care about the result that much.
