    When Kase first produced their magnetic circular filters the strength of the the magnetic attraction was definitely way too weak. Just walking around my CPL would pop off, often unnoticed, and I'd regularly find myself walking around searching for where it had popped off hoping it had not gotten scratched (it hadn't - they are very scratch resistant). Thankfully, I never lost it, but it sometimes involved a dip into deep water to retrieve it. Thankfully, Kase clearly sorted that problem out as I've not had a problem with any of their circular magnetic filters I've purchased since then. In fact, the strength is perfect - any stronger and it would get difficult to rotate them in the magnetic holder.

    One of my first jobs I had was as a assistant to a photographer, it was only for a very short period when he had hurt his back and I would help him carry all the equipment. One day he sent me to buy a pair of black nylon stockings, and since I heard that you should be ware of gooey photographers I was very much on my watch. I bought the stockings and waited too see what he was going to do with them. To my surprise he used them as a filter! 😂😂😂 So since I can’t afford Kase filters, although the system seems to be really thought through and very high quality, I will just have a dive in my stocking drawer and see what I can find.😉

    I’ve started a weightlifting program to help me pull that magnetic lens cap off the front! 😀. Of course, the magnets being too strong is a way better problem to have than the reverse. Maybe you can give them some feedback on the lens cap to put a little lip or something on them so we all don’t have to break our fingernails. The wolverine to revolution compatibility would have been nice… ive just changed over from the k9 system to the revolution for my landscape shots too… i ended up buying two sets the 95mm and the 77mm … thats to suit different uses… i wanted the ability to use filters and my lens hood on my 70-200mm lens and 100-500mm lens for landscape and motorstoports shots… the only wolverine filter i have that id withed i could get in revolution was the 0.9 grad… ive found it magnetises to the revolution ok but is at a jointy angle… its not ideal… but it works fine and hasnt fallen off yet… i know the effects of a grad can be done in post… but i have always just liked to use one on camera where appropriate! I have a feeling they wont release this as a rev filter however

    Can you please explain the difference btn Wolverine, Revolution , Skyeye, Armour and Movie Mate models within the Kase ecosystem? Ty

    • @Alister_Benn
      @Alister_Benn  Před 4 měsíci

      Wolverine is the name of the toughened glass KASE use for their filters. Revolution are circular magnetic filters, Armour are more traditional 100mm filters, but instead of sliding into a holder, they are magnetic. If you want to use graduated filters, Armour is better. I use Revolutions. I do not know the other two systems names as I have not used them.

    I bought a set way before anyone knew about Kase. I got a 77mm set back then. In one shoot I noticed a really bad magenta tint in all of my photographs. So I went back to Nisi and a filter holder. Then a few years later I got a lens that was 82mm and Kase had released a newer version of their filters so bought a new set at the correct size to fit my 82mm lens. At this point the price had almost doubled. Then I was at the beach photographing a lighthouse in 2022 and indeed the magenta tint was still present. Sorry to say I can’t recommend them.

    • @Alister_Benn
      @Alister_Benn  Před 11 měsíci +2

      That's really surprising as in the 4 years I have been using KASE filters I have never had a colour cast with any strength of ND. When Tim Parkin at OnLandscape reviewed all the current filter producers he commented on the optical integrity of the KASE filters as being outstanding. Sorry you had those experiences, but I would say they are not typical.

      @@Alister_Benn I would like to send you two RAW files for you too look at to see what I am talking about. For every composition I tend to take a test shot with no filter unless I forget. Then I start playing around with filters to get the desired results. So one of the RAW files will be no filter and the second will be the 10 stop + CPL from Kase. Since you are an ambassador for them maybe you can share it with them. Let me know if this would be possible.

    Hi, Alister. I use Kase filters as well, but not the combined system. Just wondering if the profiles of the combined filters are thinner, making vignetting less of an issue. Otherwise, is convenience the main reason for this adaptation? And you still carry a separate polarizer as well so what is the difference between using stacked versus combined filters? And I do appreciate gear guidance from pros on equipment they use. So thank you.

    • @Alister_Benn
      @Alister_Benn  Před 11 měsíci

      The combined ND/CPL is the same profile as a single ND or CPL, so yes, half the depth of a stacked pair. I carry a single CPL so I can polarise with no ND ❤️

    • @Alister_Benn
      @Alister_Benn  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Sadly not. I think they were intended to supplement the kits rather than replacing them. I have been talking to KASE about this to try and bring in fusion kits.

  • @moritzgyssler

    UV filters originally were used in analog film times when UV could have unwanted side effects on the film material. They probably also have been useful in the past to prevent scratches on the front element for those lenses used 10-20 year ago. Meanwhile lens coatings have drastically improved by the manufacturers. The coatings on nowadays quality lenses withstands touching with fingers, cloths and quite harsh handling hence UV filters - in my opinion - are a waste of resources and of no benefit. Actually their use can be counter-productive as they introduce additional surfaces in the path of light which can lead to reflections and flares ...
    In summary: you might be surprised on how much "mis-handling" todays coatings can withstand.

    Is this "new" UV filter a screw-in Revolution version of the R-MUV? When I look at the US distributor's website, they only list a Revolution R-MUV that uses an adapter?

    • @Alister_Benn
      @Alister_Benn  Před 11 měsíci

      The UV screws in and the magnetic Revolution ring screws into that. I use it on my everyday medium zoom where vignetting is never a problem.

  • @davidligon6088
    @davidligon6088 Před 11 měsíci +1

    Thank you for your review. I currently use the Freewell system, which has a UV screw on filter also acts as a magnetic ring so you can attach magnetic filters directly (without having to attach another magnetic ring. Unfortunately, my new Sony lenses (20-70 G and 70-200 GII) are 72mm, and Freewell does not make such a 72mm screw on UV magnetic base. I can use a 77mm step-up ring, but then I either have to screw on and off the magnetic ring or I cannot use my lens hood, defeating the purpose of magnetic filters for me. Screwing on a UV filter, then screwing on a magnetic ring, then attaching a magnetic filter just seems like too much vignetting. Can you elaborate on your UV filter? Is it a Kase product? Does it include a magnetic rim to attach Kase Revolution filters directly? If so, can you provide a link?

    • @Alister_Benn
      @Alister_Benn  Před 11 měsíci

      Wow, that sounds complicated! The UV filter is the new KASE MCUV(W) and screws into the lens. Mine is 82mm as my lenses are natively that diameter. The magnetic ring of the Revolution filters screws into the front of the UV and the lens caps, or magnetic filters snap onto that. Works a charm.
