Back in the day ( yes, I am old ), my friend has an L78 69 Chevelle with the Turbo 400 and 3.31 posi. At the track he would intentionally shift it down to 1 and leave it there. He would just nail it at the green and let it upshift on the transmissions’ governor which was set at 6,500 RPM. The car would be near the top of second when he crossed the finish line. It was great for bracket racing. With 7” slicks and using he method of driving, the car ran 13.5 almost exactly. If you know bracket racing CONSISTENCY is most desirable. Great video !!!

My father drag raced a '67 Chevelle, but ran a solid lifter 327 w/ the fuel injection system from a Vette. He always brought home a trophy and there always seemed to be some controversy as to how legal the injection system was but there was never any negative finding. After the first season of this, Pop went one further and spent a couple weeks doing a port job on the heads. He estimated a gain of maybe 30-40HP, but I thought it was more when I rode in it afterwards. He was running consistent mid to upper 11s w/ that engine and turning up to 8K RPM at shift. I loved the way that engine sounded at speed and haven't heard an engine quite like it.

A buddy back in high school in the early 70’s had a ‘66 Chevelle SS that was a bit of an oddball. It had the L78 396 but it came with a powerglide auto and an open differential with around 3.25 rear gears. Needless to say with the stock narrow tires that thing was a tire (singular) fryer. It could pretty much melt the right rear tire. It made for some pretty fun lunch hours cruising around our high school.

Kinda reminds me a little of my first car, Atleast in the Gearing department. A 77 Olds Omega SX with a 350 Chev 2 Barrel, it originally had a Turbo 200 Automatic i believe, which i Blew Up, which was replaced by a Rebuilt Turbo 350, with Shift Kit, the Rear was a 10 Bolt Non Posi with 2.56 Gears, in Highschool it laid the Longest One Legger Burnouts coming outta the parking lot. Wasn't very quick coming outta the hole, But it got down on the Highway, started getting very unstable once you started seeing 120 mph, but was lot's of fun for a first Car, especially after i blew up the original Engine, Spun a Rod Bearing. Rebuilt the original 350 with a Mild Cam, Aluminum Intake, Holley 600, Headers, Woke it up after that a little, Even with Those 2.56,s i Never did change the Gears on that Car. It Laid Long Ass One Tire Fryers, that's for sure.

The most impressive thing about these cars is the are running old school tires for these races. Just a set of 1970s 60s would a made a difference or old school slicks with Todays street tires I bet you can drop the et to second less.

Man seeing these old chevelles just bums me out sometimes I think back when I was 16 I had a chance to buy a 1967 Chevelle super sport 427 4 speed for $700 it was from one of my dad's friends but it didn't work out I didn't get it I never thought about it much after that but I sure would have loved to have had it the dude gave me and my brother a ride in it that was in Carlsbad New Mexico that freaking car hauled ass I mean it got on it I would have lost my license or kill myself if I would have had it so it's just as well and you want to hear another good one I didn't know about 1976 I was working for a concrete crew doing stucco and a buddy sold me a 66 GTO 389 4-speed Hurst for $100 it needed to throw out bearing in a clutch and some work on the brakes or wiring was messed up other than that it was a good car it didn't have the three deuces out of four barrel either way I didn't like it so I gave it back to him cuz it wouldn't get up and go like I thought it would damn I wish I had that fucking GTO now you think about these things you just want to cry .

Looked like that Nova was having major traction issues off the line in that final round. Personally, I love the '66 Chevelle better than the Nova ( unless it's the older Chevy II Nova ). Also, if I'm not mistaken, after the 1st yr of production, Chevy quietly bored the 396 BB 0.030" over during the remaining years, bringing the cu in displacement up to 403 cu in. ( or was it 408 cu in?.....someone help me out here )
