  • In this video, the horse used has already learned the beginning of the bow where I support his front leg as he goes down. Teaching a horse to bow is all about teaching them to change the weight as though the we’re preparing to lay down. They first have to bend a front leg and then start to transfer their weight backwards and downwards. I explain the process from beginning to end. It’s important that the horse finds trick training fun and therefore it should not be done more than once or twice and preferably at the end of a session so that the horse can be rewarded by going back to his stall or pasture directly afterwards.

Great video - thanks. My worry is that the cue for lifting the leg is similar to the cue for just picking the feet out. My mare learns so fast I’m worried she’ll be bowing every time I’m picking her feet out or the farrier comes! Am I worrying unnecessarily?

I tap my colt on the back of his leg to get him to stand up for halter. When I started I tapped on the bottom of his leg but now we have moved up to the top near his girth area. Have you ever taught this to a horse and use the tapping cue when they already have a tapping cue that means something else?

My horse likes to side step so I put her up against the fence but now everytime she shifts her weight back she steps back with the other one, wondering what I could do to fix that

    Great video and stunning horse!
I'm currently trying to teach a horse to bow, but when I hold his leg and ask him to shift his weight back he will actually put weight into the hand holding his leg and try to walk backwards. Obviously I can't hold his weight and end up having to break it off. I don't really want to use ropes/tie him up. Do you have any tips?

Get his but up against a fence. Dont pick up his leg just lure him with a treat between his two front legs to get used to shifting the weight back. Once he is good at that without backing than pick uo his leg(fence still behind him) eventually leave the fence

Right, so I tapped his leg and got nothing! Not a blink. No reaction! I decided then to tap and pick up his foot. Is that the right or wrong thing to do?
