HOW TO AVOID BRACE OR BTV WHEN YOU TAKE CONTACT
To avoid the horse bracing against the hand and the contact avoid pulling directly back on the reins. Instead lift one rein and ask for lateral flexion. The bend supples the horse and eliminates brace.
Once you have lateral bend, yoou can squeeze both reins to ask for the horse to give poll flexion (but stay bent whilst doing it) and if the horse doesn't come into frame avoid pulling the horse into frame, simply use your voice, seat or legs to tuck the pelvis and drive the horse over the topline into the bridle and onto the bit.
Always follow any poll flexion with a neck extension, no matter the length of the frame. A neck extension doesn't mean "long and low" it means lengthening the space between the vertebrae and keeping the throat latch open. If you for example have a collected frame, you would simply give your elbows an inch forward every few seconds to "stretch" the neck slightly.
To fix Behind the vertical BTV
1. Lift up the nose (bring your hands forward)
2. lift up the withers (bring your hands over the withers)
3. Create lateral flexion
4. Ask for poll flexion with lateral flexion
5. Give neck extension (stretch the neck slightly forward)

BENDING FOR BALANCE & THROUGHNESS - HALF HALT AND THE CIRCLE (DRESSAGE, HORSEMANSHIP)
zhlédnutí 104Před měsícem
It's never just the mouth that yields to bit pressure. If the mouth, head and neck yield to the hand of the rider without the rest of the horse yielding all the way into the hock, then this is what is referred to as a false frame. When the rider takes contact on the bit, the whole top line of the horse must respond. The way to test this, is through a half halt in the shape of a circle. We need ...

In this video my client and fellow Liberty trainer Sherri is starting to teach her driving pony Smokes how to perform the walk pirouette from the ground. The goal is eventually to do it at Liberty. In this video I’m working with the owner and a young stallion who has a tendency to lean on the inside shoulder through the canter transition to the left either resulting in picking up the wrong lead, running in the trot before cantering or hopping into the canter. In this video, the horse I’m working with has a tendency to stiffen the inside neck and fall on the inside shoulder thereby throwing his haunches to the outside of the circle. This is a common problem when riding or training horses. As a solution I ask the horse to bend and step away from the inside rein which I’m communicating by pushing slightly in the middle of his neck on the inside. This c...

Try this when they come behind: in a relaxed rhythm, add leg & push your hands forward with the feeling in the hand like you are throwing a sheet over bed. Also, lovely pony :)

Great idea. Your horse seems little tense- which makes him stiff. Would rather see a video with handler being more aware of how they hold lead/ touch horse and notice where the horse is.

Great video - thanks. My worry is that the cue for lifting the leg is similar to the cue for just picking the feet out. My mare learns so fast I’m worried she’ll be bowing every time I’m picking her feet out or the farrier comes! Am I worrying unnecessarily?

I tap my colt on the back of his leg to get him to stand up for halter. When I started I tapped on the bottom of his leg but now we have moved up to the top near his girth area. Have you ever taught this to a horse and use the tapping cue when they already have a tapping cue that means something else?

Great video and stunning horse! I'm currently trying to teach a horse to bow, but when I hold his leg and ask him to shift his weight back he will actually put weight into the hand holding his leg and try to walk backwards. Obviously I can't hold his weight and end up having to break it off. I don't really want to use ropes/tie him up. Do you have any tips?

Get his but up against a fence. Dont pick up his leg just lure him with a treat between his two front legs to get used to shifting the weight back. Once he is good at that without backing than pick uo his leg(fence still behind him) eventually leave the fence
