Nothing sounds better than a well running YFZ450R bud. Hope you fix this one up an add to your collection! It's an older carburetor model but they were plenty powerful & simpler than FI model like my beloved '11 YFZ450. Will never sell it! Happy New Year! #Yamaha #KTM

How do you get stuff so cheap
Thats a really good machiene..
Check your oil AFTER running it, as it has a dry-sump-type system and sometimes the oil can drain back into the crankcase. It will get circulated back to tank. Check and see if the dipstick needs to be screwed in to check the oil level as well.

The dry sump is the proper oil check when machine not running! Have a pristine '11 YFZ450R. Never sell it! 5-6hrs max on her.
The reason it's sparking when you touch the connector to the battery is because you have the key on if you turn the key off connect the terminal it won't spark always hook up the negative second
Most times when a vehicle sparks bad when you connect the battery means there is a draw some where. Meaning something is taking power that shouldn't. Most cases is a broken wire so basically a hot ground
That machine is in much better shape than what you normally work on. Great find! 😃👍
Bought a 400ex for 800$ guy said all it needed was a top end, come to find out it needed a top and bottom end. They had the rings in wrong, crank was burnt. And the head bolts were missing. Built it within a week and a half and it hasn’t had a problem since
Yfz450 are great machines! Super powerful! I feel like they were unappreciated for the longest time, until like 3-4 years ago. I used to be able to buy these in like new condition for like 1800 bucks. Now clean ones are going for $4k plus! Enjoy that thing bud! And congrats on the good deal!
you find the most ridiculous deals. That quad with a clapped out motor, bent frame and bald tires would sell fetch $3500 in my area.
I traded a yz450 for clapped out 2004 yfz 450 and 1000 cash on top and after a year of chipping away I have the nicest 478 in my area and I love it, congrats on the purchase
Please don't hold a dip stick upside down when checking oil it runs down the stick faster then you would think given a false reading. Hold flat horizontal for true reading..lol not trying to be a pain it just one of those things that gets to me . Love your videos you do great work keep it up man your killing it...
Man I’d be half tempted to cut a hole in the garage door and route a landscaping flex line from the exhaust to the hole. So in the winter he could let it idle inside. Mind you would have to rig up some sort of cover for the hole when not in use. Maybe at this point he might be use to the fumes 😉
Might be a Athena cylinder (although the marking didn't look like a typical Athena marking) and CP Carrillo Big Bore Kit, which if it is the case, I think you're supposed to use high octane race gas with.
That exhaust is one of the best. It’s $600-$700

I've had all kinds of 2 and 4 strokes and had many 2, 3 and 4 wheelers so I consider myself a decent rider and I still ate sh!t many times off my old '06 Yfz 450 with a 1/4 turn twist throttle coz they are awesome bikes!!, change your engine to the Yz 450f cam timing when you put it back together coz the Yfz Quad engine is detuned compared to the 2 wheeler Yzf...🤙

@@Davido50 Lol...🤣 Trust me bro I was born '79 so I'm an '80's child and '80's bike collector!! I have still got an '83 Rm 250 and used to have the matching 125 and 500 (sold 2 buy other toys), I had the unicorn '81 Cr450 2t and '85 Cr500 but sold them also and I still have an '83 Cr480r and I could spend all day listing off many more, I'm yet to even ride the new Yz since I bought it but I'm sure it'll be sick when the riding season finally comes back around...
My batteries have always sparked when they're fully charged .. I'm pretty sure it's normal behaviour. Especially if the key is on

Easy peasy fix for you. Decent deal, just par for the course for you. You walk into these deals all the time. I usually get them in for repair, and they say keep it or make me an offer.
Possibly one of the people that talk trash on you put that engine together! Lol you'll figure it out in sure!! Hopefully it didn't do any damage to the trans and you can just put it together the right way!!!

Got a 2013 yfz done the same thing this weeknd but got stuck in third and the others was doing the same, no grinding wouldn’t catch, was my clutch cable was stretched bad

Joe u may wanna Atleast run 93 octane with that Mx98 CP CARILLO piston!!! You’ll pre detonate it. Also u have Aftermarket swing arm, LSR +2 Heim joint a arms, LSR +2 axle, tusk bumper , anti fade anytime u need help identifying expensive parts message me. I know these quads well.

recommend from amazon the yfz bolt clip washer set comes with new hardware for the yz and yfz. also oil filter kits comes with gasket, 3 new 5mm hex bolt and oil filter i keep both around for my yfz not very expensive sure beats stripping out those 5 mm hex bolt.

Easily one of my favorite channels.
Cp Carillo piston. The cylinder is prob an oem copy. I think cylinder works might stamp em like that. Good motor. Check to see if the oil spray nozzle mod is done!!! And deff replace timing chain and gaskets. Those blow head gaskets out.
Fix it up man triple the price everything around me people want to get 3 or 4k for these used beat to hell machines. Crazy
that's an average reasonable price for a used 450 if nothing is wrong with it

Crank Bearings… had a 08’ special edition and they always go out leaving it so when you hit gas wants to stall out
I wana see the gearbox probably misspossitioned gear selector, waterpump casing need some attention on those if i can rexall correctly

Engine has to be warm to check the oil
THE COTTER PIN ON CONJUNCTION BOX NEXT TO THE DIAPHRAGM GEAR COMPULSION SPINDLE IS PROBABLY OFF BY 10 DEGREES GIVE OR TAKE , AND DON`T FORGET TO READJUST THE FLEX PLATE MODULE ON THE COLLECTOR VALVE. (EXHAUST SIDE).
See... it's literally not funny AT ALL.. when you try so hard. Trust me.. less is more in your statement.
With the headlights removed, the stator won’t charge the battery. Switch to an RM stator and rectifier.

The raptors have the oil injection and hold a lot in their system.
I cart get over fact you start stripping top end down well its in the frame wont it just be alot easyer to have engine on bench love you vids juat find it crazy to not take the engine out

It’s good practice to always connect the positive first and disconnect the negative first. It’s normal for the battery to spark when connecting the positive. It just means something is most likely on and drawing power.

The yfz is much faster and racier but for a trail quad i still like the 400ex much less matienece and the yfz run super hot if your not hauling ass all the time.

When you get a quad that normally sells for 3 to 5 grand for only $1100 it's definitely a good idea to give it an extra good going over. You're already finding a bad timing chain and several head bolts not torqued properly. Clutch basket nut washer tabs not bent over properly. Some work and some money for sure but worth it to get it going right. Probably gonna double your money at least when you get ready to sell it. Thanks again for your time today. Looking forward to seeing more on this project.
I agree if I was told it wasn't shifting properly I would of never tried starting it! I would of split the cases first who knows what they put in wrong
@@againsthell1908 he had already ridden it in first gear before I bought it. I figured it wouldn't hurt anything if I just started it up.
@@2vintage yeah true.. finished the video this morning, it sounded amazing.. they probably didn't seat the transmission gears in properly causing it to grind up.

I feel like it was a beginner error such as misplaced shim or shifting fork
Why when you have to split the engine case do you always take the motor apart in the frame instead of pulling it out complete then tare it down?
When you know there's something wrong with the quad or bike shifting you always remove the side covers first to see if it's just something simple... If you don't see anything then it's most likely the internals.. so you loosen the head bolts so you don't have to struggle doing it on a table or something

@@jonnyonwheels yup it makes your life 10x easier just loosen everything up in the frame so you aren't fighting the motor
always change the oil and filter is 25$ and can save your engine from blowing, looks like you need a bigger battery. Partzilla has all the parts you need.

That's why the oil.was milky bc they used gasket maker on the clutch side casing what mashed over into the inside 9f cases was churned up into the oil I'm guess that to be the reason for milky oil

Try charging the battery my four wheeler does the same thing I just have to plug it in a it’s good to go afterwards
I have the same quad with same exhaust system if I where you put a knn air filter and take the air box lid off way more air
That looks to be a stock cylinder bored out, might wanna see if theres a part number on that cp carrillo piston to see its compression, at sea level i wouldnt run anything more than 12.5.1 on pump gas.

My 04 wr450 had the same engine, if you want more pep out of them get yz450 cams. They have the highest lift out of all the factory variants of the 450, yfz cams were the lowest lift cams.
Always replace the timing chain i know people who paid the price

Bare you supposed to check the oil with the stick screwed in because that will make quite a difference on the level?
I would gladly trade you 1st and 5th gear for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears.
Now that’s a buy.
When they sit all there oil drains to the bottom of the motor started up let it run for a minute then check the oil had an 07 did the same thing Big Bore Kit and all but when it's sat for a few days the oil drain to the bottom of the motorcycle started up let it run shut it off check your oil

Battery dead and my raptor will do that if the bike is switched on and you hook the polarities on the battery it will spark

Joe split the case and check the shift forks. My buddy had the same issue when his was rebuilt and it ended up being a shift fork issue. I think either they were in the wrong places or installed incorrectly. Should be a pretty easy fix. I had back cut and cryo’d gears in both my DS450 and my TRX450R and I ALMOST made this same mistake. I build some pretty gnarly 450’s man. Congrats on the budget find, hell of a price bro! 🤙🏻👍🏻

Best battery for yfz is anti gravity batter it’s around 200 bucks but very worth it because yfzs need a-lot of volts to start the quad Which regular batteries can’t do as much that’s why it kills them so fast and you have to charge them it’s an anti gravity 8 cell battery and if it’s gear most likely your clutch plates I had the same problem
Yo check oil machine has to b warmed up careful u will have it overfilled
send that cylinder to mellinium Technologies near WALDO Wisconsin. They will make hte bore brand new STD size.
